To all 1072 0112, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ANDREW LEE DONOGH, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Griswold, county of Brandon, in the Province of Manitoba, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Graders and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact de- I scription ofthe invention, such as will'enable 1 others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful I improvements in grading-machinesthat is, machines adapted especially for use in gradingroads; andit consistsin certain "features of I novelty in the detail construction and arrangement thereof, all as hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
The invention consists, primarily, in a rotatable disk supported in a strong frame adapted to hold it in position parallel with the road, means for rotating the disk, scraping means for throwing off material which is lifted upon the disk, and certain meansof adjustment, all as hereinafter more fully described. Cooperating with the rotatable disk is a plow, which lifts the soil well up onto the disk while the disk is being rotated, and the soil remains on the disk until it reaches the highest point, where there is a scraper, which removes the soil from the disk. There are also means in the form of travelers secured in position to bear against the upper face of this disk, so as to hold it in proper position to avoid tilting under theweight of the soil which is thrown thereupon by the plow. The plow is ccrried in an extension of the main supporting-frame to allow one bar of the supporting-wheels to run in the ditch which is formed thereby. The supportingwheels are connected to the frame in such manner that the front wheels, which :are carried by vertical posts, are adjusted vertically by means of suitable chain or other elevating means extending to the rearward portion of the frame, while the rear axle and wheels are carried in a pivoted yoke, which may be adjusted by means of a segment and a gear. Yielding means are also provided for holding the plow securely in operative position, which means will yield in the event of the plow striking an obstacle which it cannot lift.

The front-axle 13 has the wheels 14 rotatable thereupon, and the post 15 extends from the box 16, in which said front axle is journaled, a lateral extension 17 extending rearwardly from the post 15, while a chain or cable 18 extends downwardly from said lateral extension around the pulley 1 9, which is carried by the bracket 20 from the end sill 8.
The chain or cable 18 is connected with one end of a rod 21., while a second chain or cable 22 is connected with the opposite end of said rod 21 and is wound around the drum 23., connected with which is a hand-wheel 24, which is adapted to be used in rotating said drum, whereby draft upon the chain 18 may be applied to raise the forward end of the frame 6 with relation to the wheels 14.
The diagonal braces 10 serve as means for holding the bearing-boxes in position.
The rear axle 125 is carried in boxes 26, which boxes are formed upon or connected with the pivoted arms 27, which arms are supported upon the transversely-extending rod 28, which rod'carries the beveled ear 29, which meshes with a correspondingdy beveled gear upon the studs-haf-t 31, which stud-shaft is supported by the bracket 32 at the lower side and the bracket 33 at the up- .per side thereof.
Mounted on the rear axle 25 is a sprocketwheel 50, which wheel is connected, by means of the chain 51, with the sprocketwheel 52 upon the shaft 28, so that said shaft 28 is driven from the rear wheels, and the beveled gears referred to are driven by said shaft.
The drum 23, which is mounted upon the shaft 23*, is freely rotatable thereupon, and the pawl and ratchet 53 and 54, respectively, serve to lock said drum in position when required, t e pawl 53 being supported by the bracket 55, which is made fast to said shaft 23. Carried by the shaft 23 is-a second handwheel 56, likewise provided with a pawl and ratchet and also freely rota-table uponsa-idstud-shaft 31 shaft 23 except when locked by the pawl and ratchet 57. On the sleeve 58, which is connected with the hand-wheel 56, is mounted a sprocket-wheel 59, having the chain extending around the sprocket-wheel 61 upon the shaft 62. Pinions 63 on said shaft 62 mesh with the segments 64, which are formed integral with or connected to the boxes 26 upon the arms 27, and it will be evident that when the hand-wheel 56 is rotated the shaft 62 will be rotated, thereby causing the rack and pinion referred to to raise or lower the frame of the structure, as may be desired.
The yoke 34, connected with the side sill 7, extends downwardly under the bracket 32 and is bolted at its upper ends to said side sill, thereby providing a firm support for the Carried on the stud-shaft 31 is a sprocket-wheel 35, about which passes the sprocket-chain 36, which sprocketchain engages with the larger sprocket-wheel 37 upon the shaft 38. Supported near the lower end of said shaft 38 is a rotatable disk 39. Supported by bracket-arms 40 are bearingrollers 41, which are adapted to rest upon the upper face of the disk 39 at the side thereof away from the supplemental frame 12, so as A scraper to balance sald disk in operation. l 42 is supported by a bracket-arm 40 and by the bracket-arm 43, so as to hold said scraper in firm contact with the upper face of the rotatable disk 39.
The plow is pivotally connected with the depending arms 81, as best shown in Fig. 2, and said arms 81 are connected pivotally with the extensions 82, which are carried by the shafts 83, the members 82 being rigidly connected with said shafts, so as to be rockable. therewith.
As will be seen in Figs. 1 extending arms 84 are carried by said shafts 83, and a link 85 is pivotally connected to both of said arms 84. Extending rearwardly from the link 85 is a rod 86, which extends to and is operated by the hand-lever 87, having the usual spring locking-dog 88, adapted to engage with a segment 89, carried by the frame of the machine, so that the lever 87 may be utilizedto raise or lower the plow 80, as may be found necessary. A hanger 70 extends from the said. bar 12, as shown, and to said hanger is connected the coil-spring 71, which is connected at its rear end to the beam 72 of the plow for obvious purposes.
It will be observed that the bearing-roller 41 and scraper 42 are supported by the curved extension B, which is bolted to the side sill 7 at the right-hand side of the machine, as shown in Fig. 4.
WVhile I have shown in the accompanying drawings the preferred form of my invention, it will be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise forin shown, for many of the details may be changed in form or position without affecting the operativeness or I and 2, verticallyutility of my invention, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such modifications as are included within the scope of the following claims or of mechanical equivalents to the structures set forth.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In a road-grader, a supporting-frame having a supplemental lateral extension, a plow pivotally mounted in said lateral exten sion, a rotatable disk held in cooperative position. with relation to said plow, means for rotating said disk, and scrapers carried by the frame adapted to bear against the upper face of said disk.
2. In a road-grading machine, a supporting-frame, a plow pivotally connected therewith, a rotatable disk, means for rotating said disk, rollers bearing against the upper face of said disk, a scraper bearing upon said disk, supporting-wheels, and means for raising and lowering said. supporting-frame With relation to the wheels.
3. In a road-grading machine, a frame, supporting-wheels adjustably connected with said frame, a supplemental frame extending laterally from the main supporting-frame, a plow pivotally mounted in said supplemental frame, a rotatable disk carried by the main frame, and a scraper adapted to bear upon the upper face of said disk.
4. In a road-grading machine, a support ingframe, a vertical shaft carried thereby, a rotatable disk mounted on said shaft, a laterally-extending supplemental frame, a plow supported by said supplemental frame, an oppositely projecting supplemental frame, and a scraper supported by said last-mentioned supplemental frame.
5. In a road-grading machine, a supporting-frame, wheelcarrying arms pivotally connected with said frame, segments connected with said arms, pinions meshing with said segments, and means for rotating said pinions.
6. In a road-grading machine, asupporting-frame, wheel-carrying arms pivotally connected with said frame, segments connected with said arms, atransversely-extending shaft carried by said frame, pinions on said shaft adapted to mesh with said segments, a sprocketwheel on said shaft, a second shaft forwardly thereof, a sprocket-wheel and a hand-wheel on said second shaft, a sprocketchain connecting with sprocketwheels, and means for locking said handwheel.
