Letters Patent .il-To. 81,376, dated August 2 5, 1868.
`IMIEB-)VlliifiilNT IN GUIDE FOB. SCROLL-vSAWS.
iilgt -ilgrinh refrrreh tu in tlg'rse rers intent mit making mi nf tige same.
Be it' known that II, L. A. JOHNSON, of New York, in the oounty of New York, and State of'New York, have invented a new and useful lImprovement in Guides for Scroll-Saws; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the snme, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,` in .whieh- Figure l'is a side sectional view of my invention, taken in4 the line :c fr, fig. 2. Figure 2 is a plan or topview ofthe same. Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved guide for scroll-saws, whereby the saw is rendered stili' and firm', and prevented whilent work from springing either backward or sideways.
Scroll-saws, asfis well known, require to be quite narrow and thin, and the stui, while being sawed in scroll-form, is continual-ly turned, and the sew cons'equently'is very liable to he twisted, and also to he forced or sprung backward in feeding the stuff to it. These difficulties are fully obviated by my improvement.
In the accom an 'infr sheet of drawinws A re resents a ressure-clam soV arraiwed as to, ress n on the P e c P P P e P P work to be sawed, and keep it down upon the table. This pressure-clamp is forked, as shown clearly in fig.
lner as and for the purpose set forth.
and each prong `*of the forli has a screw., T, passing through it. These screws are in line with each other, as shownclearly in fig. 2, and the inner ends of the screws are pointed, or made of conical form, and are fitted in the ends of-a shaft, Cl', on which n roller, D, is firmly keyed, or the roller and shaft may he turned out of n single piece of metal.
the latter bearing against. the back of the groove, (see iig.
By this arrangementitwill be seen that theroller will prevent the, saw from swinging backward, while the stud' is fed towards it, and the roller will also prevent the 'saw from being twisted, in consequence of the latter working in the grooveof the roller.l This will be fully understood by referring to g. 2.
Having thus desorihedmy invention', I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The grooved guide-roller D, fitted in the pressure-clzimp A, to receive the sew E, substantially in the man- L. A. JOHNSON.
, Witnessesz FRANK BLocnLnY, ALEX. F. Roniinrs.
'.ll1e.roller D has a. gruoved periphery, the groove heingsuiliciently wide to receive the saw E, the hack of
