Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, SAM BENSON LAssITER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mullins, in the county of Marion and State of South Carolina, have invented a new and useful Plow and Cultivator, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plows and cultivators; and the principal obj ect of the invention is to provide improved means whereby the beams and standards carrying the earth-engaging blades may be conveniently adjusted to different positions in the carryticularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations, and modifications within the scope of the invention may be made when desired.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a device constructed in accordance with the principles of the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view takenon the plane indicated by the line 3 3 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional detail view taken on the plane indicated by the line 4 4 in Fig. 2.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are indicated throughout by similar characters of reference.
The frame of the improved machine is composed of side members 1 1, connected near their front and rear ends by means of screwthreaded rods 2 and 3. An axle 4, having carrying-wheels 5 5, supports the side pieces 1 1 of the frame, said axle being preferably extended through apertures forming boxes in said side pieces. Upon the axle between the side pieces are mounted a pair of bars 6 6, between the ends of which are supported a pair of slotted segment- plates 7 and 8, the slots of which are engaged by the screw-threaded rods 2 and 3, respectively. Upon the screwthreaded rod 2 adjacent to the segment-plate 7 is loosely mountedl a block 9, in which is swiveled a screw 10, extending through a nut 11, which is swiveled upon the segment-plate 7. The screw 10 is provided at its upper end with a hand-wheel 11/, whereby it may be conveniently manipulated by the operator, whose seat 12 is supported upon the bars 6 6 in rear of the axle. A tongue 13 is connected with and extends forwardly from the segment-plate 7, and upon this tongue is pivoted an equalizer 14, the ends of which are connected with the ends of the axle by means of links 15, so that when draft is applied to the equalizer it will be transmitted direct to the yends of the axle and through the latter to the side members of the main frame.
Upon the screw-threaded rods 2 and 3, between the bars 6 and the side members 1 1, are supported nuts 16 17, having iianges 18 19, provided with spur-teeth 20, adapted to be engaged by reversible pawls 21', carried by levers 22 23, which are fulcrumed upon the.
nuts, so that by manipulating said levers the nuts may be turned in either direction, and thus be moved in the direction of the intermediate bars 6 of the frame or in the direction of the side pieces of the latter, according to the direction of rotation. The plow-carrying standards 24 are provided with eyes 25, engaging the nuts 17, and said standards are provided with forwardly-extending beams or braces 26, having terminal eyes 27 engaging the nuts 16, the eyes 25 27 engaging the nuts 17 16 at both sides of the flanges 19 18, so that there will be no danger of the parts becoming separated when the nuts are moved upon the rods for the purpose of effecting the desired adjustment of the plows.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood. It will be seen that by manipulating the nuts 16 17 as herein described the plow-carrying members are capable of being laterally adjusted to any desired position between the side members of the frame. The frame itself may be tilted by manipulating the screw 10, so as to raise the earth-engaging implements from the ground or to set said implements into the ground to any desired depth at which they will be securely retained during the operation TOO of the device. The construction is simple and inexpensive, and the device will be found useful and thoroughly eflicient for the purposes setyforth.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is j 1. A frame including side pieces connected near the front and rear ends by screw-threaded rods, a wheel-carrying axle supporting said side pieces, nuts upon the rods having annular flanges provided with spur-teeth, pawlcarrying levers fulcrumed upon said nuts, plow-carrying standards having eyes engaging the nuts upon the rear screw-threaded rod, and braces connecting said standards wictih the nuts upon the front screw-threaded ro 2. A lframe including side members and screw-threaded rods connecting said side members near their front and rear ends, nuts adjustable upon said rods, and blade-carrying implements connected operatively with said nuts. i
3. A frame including side pieces and screwthreaded rods connecting said side pieces near theiry front and rear ends, nuts upon said rods having annular flanges, standards having eyes engaging the nuts upon the rear screw-threaded rod at opposite sides of the anges of said nuts, and braces connected with said standards and having eyes engaging the nuts upon the front screw-threaded rod at opposite sides of the flanges of said nuts.
4. A frame having side pieces connected near their front and rear ends by screwthreaded rods, nuts supported adjustably upon said rods, earth-engaging implements carried by the nuts, an axle supporting the side pieces of the frame, bars engaging said axle between the side pieces of the frame, segmentally-slotted plates supported at the front and rear ends of said bars for the passage of the screw-threaded rods, a block supported loosely upon one of said rods, a nut swiveled upon one of the segment-plates, a screw extending through said nut and swiveled in the loosely-supported block, and a tongue connected with the segment-plate.
5. A frame having side pieces connected 5o near their front and rear ends by screwthreaded rods, nuts supported adjustably upon said rods, earth-engaging implements carried by the nuts, an axle supporting the side pieces ofthe frame, and means for tilting 5 5 the frame upon the axle and for securing it at various adjustments.
6. A frame having side pieces connected near their front and rear ends by screw-- threaded rods, nuts supported adjustably 6o upon said rods, earth-engaging implements carried by the nuts, an axle supporting the side pieces of the frame, a frame-bar engaging the axle between the side pieces, a plate supported by said frame-piece and having a segmental slot for the passage of the front screw-threaded rod, means for tilting the frame and for securing it at various adjustments with relation to the intermediate frame-bar, a tongue connected with the seg- 7o ment-plate, an equalizer pivoted upon the tongue, and links connecting said equalizer with the axle.
