l TO ALL WHOM IT MY CONCERN:
`man to myself :ma J. W. Legg', May-5, 1868.-
I Beit known that I, J. D. LEGG, of Long Eddy, in the countyof Sullivan, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Curtain-Fixtures; and I do hereby declare that the following is u. full, clear, and exact description thereoi-, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a front view of m'y invention. i Figure 2 is a side view of the same. Figure-3 is an cnlarged'sectional view of a part ofthe same, taken'in the line :v x, ig.,2. Similar letters of reference indicate like-parts. i i 4This invention relates to a new and useful improvement on al curtain-fixture, for which Letters Patentiverc The object of the present invention is to obviate -tho diculty attending the lowering or drawing down ofl the shade, and the winding up of the coil-springs, theinner ends of the latter being attached to the cylindrical boxes, out of or at a short distance from, theirv centres, a necessity in the old arrangement, and which causes the springs to bind, after a fcw convolutions have been di-awa together by a few rsvolutionsof the cylindrical boxes, so that the springscannot be fully wound up.. l
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, A represents a window-curtain, one end of which is attached to n roller, B, having a pulley, C, on one end of it, t which acord, D,v is secured.
The journals a Lof the attached ttrga'ts upperend.
These straps or belts are secureclato the peripherics of cylindrical boxes G, which are enclosedwithin cylindrical cases, H Hattached to the upper'part of the window-casing. l v v The boxes G are fitted loosely on shafts or axes Land within each boX a coiled spring, J, is placed, 'the -inner ends of 'the springs being fitted to the shafts or axes, as shown atb, and theouter endslattached to the boxes at their peripheries,as shown at c.
'roller B are fitted .in metallic'nrxns, E E, each arm having a'strnp or belt, F,
The shafts or axes I have each a ratclicadx, on them, into which pawlse engage, said pawls being attached to the cases H.
'lo the lower end ofl the curtain A, there is attached al wooden strip or har, K, and this stripuor bai is Acon- :neoted by hooksf-to the window-sill; when it is rlesired to' lower the shade at the top. l v
, It will be seen, when the strip or bar K is thus attached, that, by pullingdownward the cord D, the curtain lwill be uni-oiled at the top,and lowered, and may be secured atany desired point byy winding' the cordaround the bracket at the bottom ofthe casing. I '.lhesprings J J, as the curtain is thus lowered, are wo'uhdu'p, so that, by-loesening or detachring the cord D, .the springs( will un'roll and raise the curtain..
By detzcliing or loosening the bai" or strip K, the curtain maybe raised andlowered from the bottom, as usual.
By this arrangement, the coil-springs may be wound up p'erfectly, lror without any'dang'er of binding. AThe pawls and ratcliets, it will be'perceivcd, pre-vent the' shaftsl lor axes-'I from turning when the curtain is being pulled down, and thev springs J are being wound up.
- Having thus described my invention,- I claixn as new, and desire to'sccurc by Ircttcrs Patent-- 'The coil-springs J, enclosed conc-entrically within tho, cylindrical boxes lGn'and attached-to the shafts or axes I, andthe peripheries .of the boxes G, in combination with the pawls e, ratchets dx, andcurtain A, all.`
'being arranged vsubstantially inthe -manner as and for the purpose set forth. A
'..lhe above specification of my invention signed by me, this'3d day -of July, 1868-. l L
