Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 30, 1906.
Application filed April 5, 1905. Serial No. 25 L018.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID SrnvnNs, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Ogden, in the county of Weber and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Bodies, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wagon-bodies, and has forits object to provide a device of the class which may be used as an ordinary wagon-body or as a chute-wagon with a hopper-bottom.
A further object of my invention is to provide a wagon-body divided into a plurality of compartments by hinged partitions.
A further object of my invention is to provide a wagon-body having an opening adjacent the middle thereof with a closure for the opening and hinged partitions adjacent the opening adapted to permit the contents of either end compartment to flow through. the opening and into a chute disposed below the opening.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combina tion and arrangement of parts, as will behereinai'ter more fully described, shown. in the ac comp anying drawin s and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it beingunderstood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advanta es of the invention.
In file drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved wagon-body. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of my improved wagon-body. Fig. 3 is a view of my improved Wagon-body in end elevation. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of my improved wagonbody. Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of my improved wagon-body with the adjustable bottom raised to form inclines and the hinged partitions open to permit the contents to flow through the open ing into the chute. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view of my improved wagon-body, taken on line 6 6 of Figs. 4 and 5. Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view of the closure for the opening in the bottom of the wagon-body.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
My invention consists, essentially, of a wa on-body having the usual vertical sides 1 an slidable end-boards 2. Approximately midway between the ends oi the wagon-body is formed an opening 3, extending transve'rsely entirely across the body. To close the opening 3, a plane cover member 4 is provided proportioned to fill the opening and be supported in any approved manner, as by the cleats 5. The bottom of the wagon-body is composed of sections 6, hinged, as at 7, adj aeent the opening 3. Beneath the sections 6 is disposed means for raising the opposite ends of the sections 6 to form an incline from the opening extending to either end of the wagonbody. The means for adjusting the hinged sections may be the boards 8, extending transversely across the Wagon-body, hinged, as at 9, and adapted and arranged to contact with the cleats 10, secured to the sections 6 to hold the sections at the desired angle. As the sections 6 are raised at their opposite ends the sliding end-boards 2 may be raised, as shown in. Fig. 5.
Within the wagon-body are disposed two partitions 1.1, pivotally secured to rods 12, extending transversely across the wagon body and removably through the opposite sides 1. The partitions 11 are proportioned to con tact with the bottom of the wagon-body adjacent the opening 3 and are provided with any convenient and approved means for holding a partition in a vertical position, as the sliding bolts 13, engaging openings 14 in the side-boards oi the body.
Beneath the wagon-body and beneath the opening therein is disposed a chute 15, which may be secured to either side of the body and extend laterally from the other side. The chute is retained in position in any approved manner, as by the hooks 16 engaging eyes 17, secured to the sides of the chute.
The operation of my improved wagon-body is as follows: If the wagon-body is to be used as an ordinary wagon-bed, the partitions 11 are removed and the cover member l placed in the opening 3. The body then substantially conforms to the wagon-bodies ordinarily in use. It is well known that for transporting grain to elevators and other granular materials a wagon body provided with a chute through which the contents may be discharged is a matter of great convenience.
I It often happens that more than one material is to be transported at the same time and it is desirable to keep the diflerent materials separated.
With my improved wagon-body the partitions 11 may be secured, as shown in Figs. 1,
2, and 4, and the bottom sections 6 raised, as shown in Fig. 5. Materials may then be placed within the end compartments and in that condition transported as desired. WVhen it is desired to unload the material, the chute 15 is placed in position, as shown, and the cover member 4 removed from the opening 3. The partitions 11 may then be swung upon the rods 12 by disengaging the bolts 13 from the openings 14, thereby permitting the materials to be discharged through the opening 3 into the chute 15. It is of course obvious that either one or both of said partitions may be opened at one time and the contents of both or only one end compartment discharged.
While I have shown in detail mechanism for carrying out and putting into operation the several essential features of myinvention, it is to be distinctly understood that I do not limit myself to the combination of the several features shown, but reserve the right to use any of such features singly or in combination with other features shown or with features not shown and to make such minor changes as fall within the scope of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a wagon-body, a bottom adjustable to an incline at each end and provided with an opening adjacent the middle thereof, a laterally-extending, inclined chute beneath the opening and means for controlling the dis charge of material from either end of the body through the opening and into the chute.
2. In a wagon-body, a bottom adjustable to an incline at each end and provided with an opening adjacent the middle thereof, a laterally-extending, inclined chute beneath the opening, means for adjusting the chute to extend upon either side and means for controlling the discharge of material from either end of the body through the opening and into the chute.
3. A wagon-body having three compartments arranged longitudinally, means provided in the middle compartment for opening the bottom thereof, means for raising the opposite ends of the bottoms of the end compartments and means to control the passage of material from the end compartments to the middle compartment and through the opening.
4. A wagon-body divided transversely by two hinged partitions into three compart ments, means for raising the opposite ends of the bottoms of the end compartments, means for opening the bottom of the central compartment and means for controlling the flow of material from either end compartment into the central compartment by moving one hinged partition.
5. A wagon-body having an opening through the bottom adjacent the middle, a removable closure for said opening, two removable rods passing transversely across the body and through the sides, a partition pivotally mounted upon each of said rods and proportioned to contact with the bottom adjacent the sides of the opening and means for detachably securing the partitions in vertical positions to divide the body into three compartments.
6. A wagon body having an opening through the bottom adjacent the middle, two removable rods passing transversely across the body and through the sides, a partition pivotally hinged upon each of said rods and proportioned to contact with the bottom adjacent the opening, means for holding the partition in a vertical position, means for raising the opposite ends of the bottom to form an incline from the opening to each end and means for swinging either of the partitions to control the flow of material from either end through the opening.
7. A wagon-body having an opening in the bottom and a closure for the opening forming a substantially plane surface with the bottom, partitions arranged and proportioned to be placed transversely across the body adjacent the opening and to form a central compartment, rods arranged to pass through the sides of the body and secure the partitions pivotally therein, means for rais ing the ends of the bottom forming an incline from adjacent the partitions and a chute disposed below the opening and extending laterally from the body.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID STEVENS.
