Description

PATENTED JAN 16, 1906.
J. W. GRANT.
POP SAFETY VALVE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 5, 1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
POP SAFETY-VALVE.
Specification of Letters .Patent.
Patented Jan. 16, 1906.
Application filed June 5,1905. Serial No. 263,822.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JORDAN W1NsLow GRANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pop Safety-Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pop safety-valves, and has for its principal object to provide a novel construction of pop-valve in which the closing-spring is protected from oxidation and the injurious effects of high temperature by the employment of a spring-holder separate from the valve-chamber.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide a device of this type in which the adjustment of the spring may be readily accomplishedin accordance with the pressureto be carried without danger of injury to the operator. 1
With these and other objects in view the invention-consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that various changes in the form and proportions of parts may be varied without departing from the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a safety-valve constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
The valve and its spring are arranged within a pair of parallel cylindrical casings 10 and 11, that preferably are formed of an integral casting and united by a web 12. The top of the web carries a. pair of lugs 13, between which is pivoted the central portion of a lever 14, having one arm connected to the valve and the other to the spring. The casing 11 is provided at its upper end with a threaded cover 11 and at its lower end with a threaded opening for the reception of an adjustingscrew 16, the upper end of which bears against the central portion of a disk 17 within the casing. This disk receives the lower end of a helical compression-spring 18, and at the top of the latter is a disk 19, connected to the lower end of a short rod 20, the upper end of which is pivotally connected to the lever 14.
The upper end of the casing 10 is provided with a perforated cover 10 to allow steam to escape from the cylinder, or the cylinder may be provided with an opening on the side to allow the steam to escape.
The lower end of the casing 10 is internally threaded for the reception of a removable valve-seat 21, having a wrench-engaging face 22 and terminating in a threaded portion 23, which is connected to the boiler or a pipe leading therefrom.
The upper portion of the valve-seat 21 is reduced in diameter and threaded for the reception of a detachable and adjustable huddling-ring 24, which is provided with peripheral notches 25 for the reception of a setscrew 26, by which the huddling-ring may be locked in adjusted position.
The valve-seat receives a valve 27, having the usual pendent wings 28. In the upper face of the valve is a recess 29 for the reception of the lower end of a valve-spindle 30, the upper end of which is pivotally connected to the lever 14.
It will be noted that the spring is wholly protected from the steam and cannot be injured by oxidation. It is furthermore so arranged that adjustment may be readily accomplished without danger of injury from escaping steam.
Should it become necessary to renew a broken or fatigued spring, the valve may be locked in place and the lever detached, after which the spring-casing may be opened and the spring removed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A pop safety-valve, comprising a pair of integral parallel cylinders having a connecting web and one constituting a valve-chamber and the other a spring-casing, a valve-seat secured within the lower portion of the chamber, a valve arranged on said seat, a perfo rated cap arranged at the top of the casing and removable therefrom for repair or renewal of the valve, a loose valve-stem guided in a central opening in the cap and entering through a threaded opening at the bottom of a centrally-disposed recess in the Valve, a the casing and bearing on saidlower disk. 10 compression-spring arranged in the casing, In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature upper and lower disks at the ends of the in presence of two subscribing Witnesses. spring, a stern extending from the upper JORDAN WINSLOW GRANT. disk, a pivot-lug carried by the Web, a lever Witnesses:
pivoted thereto and connected to said tWo A. PATRroK,
stems, and an adjustingscrew passing LoUIs GEBnBAoH.
