No.8l9,335.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed August 11905. Serial no. 274,165. g
Patented May 1, 1906.
'To all whom, it may concern: a
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of- Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Beams; and Igdo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which center pin of a truck and to so look together as to cause an even distribution of 'a strain to both beams-of the draft-rigging, such arrangement being also madewith special pro-- vision for accessibility and ready removal of the parts for the purpose of repair.
The construction, 0 eration, and arran ment of the parts of t e invention are fu ly described in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in
'broken away; and Fig. 4 is a cross-section of/;
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the draft-rigging comprising my invention, togetherwith the associated head-block and upper-stransom, the latter being partially broken away. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same with portions of the lower transom broken away. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the draft-rigging and the portion of a car to which it is secured, with a portion of one draft-beam shown as the draft-rigging and associated portion of a.-
car, taken on the dotted line as 00 in Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, 1 1 represenfit my improved draft-beams, preferab y cast from'malleable irpn or steel, which are of X111- plicate construction and each made in shiele' ton form, as shown Qb dotted lines in Fig, .1,
to cheapen and lig ten' the' construction thereof. The companion draft-beama 1 are rigidly bound together in spaced relationby binding-bolts2 which pass throughv (each of .the beams and the'spacing members 3, as
shown; and are rigidly secured to the two center sills 4 of .a car by'means pf the/bindingbolts, 5, said bolts passing througjh'a beam through the bearing-block for andsuperim osed sill, as shown. A headblock 6 of s itable construction, is bolted-1n transverse position to the forward end ofthe beams 1 and has its rear face. abutting against the face Off the end sill 7, to which-it is also bolted. 1 I L Formed integral with the innerfaces of the companion draft-beams 1 adjacent to their rear ends. are the correspondingly positioned bosses or projections 8, which have their contiguous faces flattened and abutting to form abearing-block between the beams for the center pin of a truck. The abutting faces of the {portions 8 are each formed with a vertical semicircular concav1ty wh1ch register to form the opening or bearing 9 for the reception ofthe center pin and are formed on op posite sides of said concavities with a vertical tongue a vertical. groove which register, respectively, with the groove and tongue of the other member to form interlocking joints, as showh at 10. The purpose of interlocking ner instead of having their abutting surfaces the halves-of the bearing-block in this manmade plain is to cause astress on the bearinga block or an unequal stress on the two draftbeams ,tobe equally distributed to both of such beams, asone beam is revented from a longitudinal movement by t e other. While the two sections of the bearing-block are each shown as provided with a tongue and a groove, both tongues may be provided on, one section and, the grooves on the other, if desired.
The up er and lower surfaces of the portions of t e beams 1, from which the blocksetions8 project, are countersunk or grooved *a/sufiicient depth and width to receive the utpper and lower transom members 11, the cuter surfaces of which are flush with the respective surfaces of the beams, sas shown.
These transom members are united at their ends to the side sills 4 and :each is formed with an aperture alining with, the opening center pin.
Mounted between the forward ends of the draft-beams 1 is the usual draw-bar 12, which has the yokearms 13 secured to its rear end for [receiving the follower-plates 14, which have their ends reciprocally mounted the pockets.15,- rovided in transversely-ahmn position in t e inner sides of the beams 1 and are yieldingly spaced apart by the twin springs 16, as shown.
i In addition to the binding-bolts 5 the draft-- rigging is further secured againsta longitudireceiving the beams.
I their abutting faces firterlocked and formed readily separated by the removal of the renal movement with respect to the outer sills l by reason of the ribs or raised portions 17, formed on the upper surface of each beam 1, I fitting within transverse grooves provided in i the lower surface of the center sills.
It will thus be seen that the construction of my draft-rigging materially cheapens' and simplifies its manufacture-by reason of the center-pinblock being caste-integral with the draft-beams, that the forming of said block l in two sections enables the two beams to be t aining-bolts for the purpose of repairing or replacing one of the beams, and that the interlocking of the abutting faces of such blocksections strengthens and causes the strain to be more equally distributed to the two draft- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is I j 1. In a draft-rigging, two companion draftbeams having integral abutting projections formed on their inner faces to constitute a center-pin block, said projections having with arr opening for a center pin, and means for securing the beams together.
secured together in spaced relation and hav- 5 ing abutting projections formed integral on their inner faces to constitute a center-pin bearing-block, said blocks having their abutting faces formed with vertically-disposed tongue-and-groove connection whereby to prevent an independent longitudinal movement of either beam and also formed with an opening for a center pin.
3. In a draft-rigging, two cast-metalbeams secured together in rigidly-spaced relation and provided adjacent to their rear ends with an interposed center-pin block, said block com rising two abutting sections, one of whic- 'i is cast integral with each beam, and countersunk portions provided in the upper and lower surfaces of each beam in transverse alinement with the center-pin block for the reception of upper and lower transom meml bers.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
