Description

No. 818,529. PATENTED APR. 24, 1906. H. EDICK. WHEELBARROW. APPLICATION FILED APIM. 1904.-
2 SHEETS-SHEET 2.
HARVIN EDIGK, OF JOHNSTOWN, NEW YORK.
WHEELBARROW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 24, 1906.
Application filed April 1904. Serial No. 201,5l4=.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVIN EDIoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at J ohnstown, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Wheelbarrow, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to wheelbarrows, and more particularly to one having a longitudinally-shiftable hopper whereby the weight of the load can be thrown directly upon the wheel or at apoint to the rear of the wheel, as preferred.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully explained, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the practical application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the supportingfraine. Fig. 4 is a side view of the wheelbarrow, the hopperbeing arranged so as to throw the weight to the rear of the wheel. Fig. 5 is an inverted plan view of the hopper and bars connected thereto. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the supporting-bail, and Fig. 7 shows details of construction.
In carrying out my invention, I employ the thills A, provided with boxes A at their forward ends and in which the axle B of the wheel B is journaled C indicates the ordinary supporting-legs.
The hopper D is arranged upon two longitudinal-bars E, which are pivotally connected at their front end to two arms F, which in turn are hinged to castings G, secured to the thills A adjacent their forward ends. This construction permits the hopper D to be shifted from the position shown inFig. 4 to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and for the purpose of supporting the hopper in its adjusted position I em loy a supporting-bail H, essentially rectangu ar in shape and which is pivoted at H to the thills A, and when thrown back to support the hopper the legs of said bail engage the stop-pins H carried by the said thills, The ends of the bars E have openings E", through which bolts are adapted to be passed, and wing-nuts E are adapted to be screwed thereon for the pur pose of fastening the said bars against longitudinal movement, and these bolts and nuts are employed when the hopper is in either position.
A tray I is arranged between the thill and rests beneath the hopper D, said tray being detachable.
It will thus be seen that I provide an improved construction of wheelbarrow the hopper of which can be quickly and easily shifted to a position either directly over the wheel or to a point in the rear of said wheel, the advantage of arranging the hopper above the wheel being to facilitate the movement of the barrow when heavily loaded.
The loaded barrow can be very easily dumped by throwing the barrow forwardly over the wheel.
If desired, the hopper D may be detached and the tray I used in place of said hopper, this being desirable sometimes.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a wheelbarrow the combination with a pair of thills having a wheel mounted on the shaft journaled in the forward ends, of a hopper carried by bars arranged on said thills, castings secured to the forward end of the thill, links connected to said bars and castings, legs connected to said thills, and a bail pivoted to the side of the thills adapted to hold the hopper in an adjusted position, for the purpose described.
2. In a wheelbarrow the combination with a wheeled frame, of the hopper, the bars to which the hopper is attached, the arms to which the bars are hinged, said arms being hinged to the frame, and the pivoted support ing-bail, together with means for limiting the movement of said bail and means for fastening the hopper in either position.
3. In a wheelbarrow, the combination with a pair of thills, mounted on a wheel and provided with legs of a hopper carried by parallel bars, castings secured to the end of the thills, links pivotally connected to the castings and bars, a bail pivoted to the side of the thills adapted to engage the hopper, and a pin arranged on the side of the thill, and adjacent the bail adapted to hold the bail in an adj usted position, for the purpose described.
4. In a wheelbarrow, the combination with a pair of thills, mounted on the wheel and supported by legs, of a hopper carried by parthe hopper in an adjusted position by engaging pins arranged on the side of the thills, for
the purpose described. A
HARVIN EDICK.
