Description
JOHN TURNER, "CF NORWICH, CONNECTICUT.
Lettere Patent No. 81,845, dated September 1, 1868; antedat'cd August 25,1868.
` IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINE FORv CQVBRING CORD.
To ALL wHoM 1T MAY eoNcERNQ Bo it known that'LMJOnrr TURNER, rcf/Iloriwicln.in: the county of liew Londonand Stato hffConne'cticut',
havo invented a new an-dffiiseful Improvementin. lMachinery for Making Covered Twist and Cord, o fvi'hich the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing, fizirmingA part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents :a sectional elevation of an apparatus for making eoveredeord, embracing my inverg-v tion, and
Figure 2 a sectional plan of the same.- Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This improvement relates to machinery by'which cotton or other yarn is twisted tofform strands, and the` l strands are covered with silk, n'orsted, or other material, and after having beenso covered, me'y beleid and.` Vtwisted together to form cord; and my invention consists in a novel arrangement of the bobbin,.that carries the covering-yarn or material, relatively to the strand-spindle and yarn-hobbins, by placing said bobbin coinci-` dent with the axis abot which the twistingia performed, whereby the'centrifugal force .of the coveringlhobbin is reduced, and an increased velocity maybe given to the same, to 'effect a more perfect winding o f the covering round the strand n'iti'a less n urnberof ccvering-hohhins.`
.In the accompanying drawing, my improvement is shown as applied .to making covered cord by laying and twisting together three coveredsttands, but any number-fof strand-spindles may be'uscd, according to the number of strands required to make up the cord.-
Anis the frame of thcsinaclnc, having at its onoside*aV-generaldriving-shaft, B, rotating, say, asindi--V vcated by the arrow z, `and carrying 'pulleys a b c d, for giving motion by belt or bhpd, through pulleys 'on' or connected with them, to the strand-spindles C, with their frames carrying the yarn-bobbinsD, and to the fliers E. Each strand-spindle may have any lnumber of yarn-bobbins, D. y'
' Though said spindles and fliers are here shown as being driven so that they simply rotate about their'own axes, and not about or round a common axis or main centreas well, this latter-motion maybe given them in addition, if preferred; the arrangement and action oflth'e coveringfbobbins F relativelyto the strand-spindles, anrl use and action of the fliers, remaining in either case the same.' s Y p i It is, in fact., all-important, in` this, myinv entio`n, that the covering-bobbins F should, either-as here shown," or in any other suitable manner, each be arranged with its axis coincident with the axis of the twisting apparat'us; likewiseimpottant 'or desirable that a iii'e'r', arranged Ato operate essentially as showp, ,should be used, and that the covering-yarn should be condndticd to, through, or over it, all as more clearlycirplained inthe following description ofthe operation. V l i.
Ou setting the machine in motion, the spindles C twist t-ogethei; the -yarns m, from the hobbinsI), theyaru's4 being conducted by guide-pins e to eyes f, on the spindles, and, thenceto openings h in the latten-and'madeto vpass through thespindle's, the twisted yarn from each spindle forming the cord, thetwisting taliing place between the opening hand e hole in n guide, G, from iwhenceetheV strand n Apasses vto thclaying-topH, where .the sev-4 eral strands n, from the different spindles, meet to be twisted together into cord,`as` in other machines,`eor in any' suitable manner. 1 Y The strands are covered as the yarns'm, composing them', are twisted, or justbefore the twist'is`complted, by yarn or material drawn from the Eier-bobpins F,rarranged coincident n'ith the axis about whichV the twisting is performed, each of said hobbins being here shown as hung for independent rotation (,under, it may be, a suitable friction-check) on'or' round a* sleeve lof the flier, EJ that ha: its centreofV rotationr ccincidentavith the axis of the strand-spindle, and is interposed between the strand-twisting and layingapparatus. One`,'vtwo, or,
'more yarns, s, may he supplied by each covering-bobhih. 'lhbeso yarns, s, arpleonducted tqthe strand, tc,
Anear the centro ofthe flier.
through, or over tho arms of cach dier E,van`d from thence through the guido 'G,:tot hc covcrjingepoint at'or supposing thentrand-ynrn .boli-binslD to rotate as indionteid by the ancrer/,the fliers, with their coveringobbins E, may revolve as denote@ bythe arrowsz.
Bytlie arrangement of the covering-fliers' or ybobbing in' the axe about which tne'twisting of the yarns to form the strands is effected, the centrifugal force of the oo'vering-bobbins is roduoed to e minimum,l so tht they moybe run faster ih'an where` the axes of said bobbins 'are eocentricnllyfsitimtfod,l or not oono'iontfwith the twitng-axig, whereby the covering may be wound more directly around t'hetrsnd, and ltlie liability 'of I its Vfalling between the thiende of the strand is prevented, and such incresdyfepeed vrenders a. less nnxnborof covering-bobbins necessary,` llowing, it :nay he, a'single one 'to be need for' e'ahitx-and` l y vWhen it is desired to make covere'd twist Without mnnnfacturing tholtwiet yinto cord, asingle strand-spindle,
C, carrying -bobbins D, with alike relative arrangement to that herein desgribed, of flier with its covering bobbin, may be uned.. i l Y E; I
Wlatisher'zlaimed! and desired tobe securedby Letters Patent, isi The covering-bbbin F, arranged and operating in combination with the twisting-spindle C and. yarn-Bobbin D,` substantially. lshown vend' described.
JOHN TURNER.
