To IIJ/Z whom it may concern.-
Be it known that. l,- Enwrn M. Home, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county'oi Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in a ComhinedjCouchand Bed; and l do hereby declare the following to invention, such as will enable ot ers skilledin the art to' which it appertains to make and use the same.
-The principal object of this invention is to provide an improved construction of couch by manipulation from the front of the couch pieces of the couch are made to serve as ample headboards."
The invention is embodied the con'- struction and combination of parte herein after described and claimed. A lnt'he accompanying drawings, Figure l is a transverse vertical sectional view showin the parte in their conch-forming position wit the upholstery omitted. Fig. 2- is' a similar view lwith the parts in lied-forming position.. larger scale, showing the position ot the hin e and lowered. to release the catch that holds the back in its normal angular relation to the seat. Fig. t 'is a' simi ar view showing the position of the tminnion when the catch is released and the seat lowered to permit thev back and seat to bedrawn forward to form the bed. Y
ln the several views, inwhich like characters 'of reference desionate corresponding parts, 1 designates the ox-like base, which is bolted to upright end pieces la. 2 desigln order that the hack may he operated to convert the couch into a bed or .the ed into a couchby manipulation of the seat only, the seat and back are shown to-be provided with devices substantially like those shown in the Letters Patent of 'the United States issued to me and d. B. Hoover on June 10, 1902, No. 702,304; but in the present instance the arm o is made with only one tooth 6b, which is lo-f pomsitioned eccentrically to the intle 5 of the cated near the end oi the arm. The arm also has a lug 6c at its free extremity. The reason for using one tooth only is that two positions only of the back with respect to the seat are needed-that is, a position where theyv i are at right angles to each other'and where they lie in substantially the same plane. As in said former patent, the ratchet-arm Gis also made with a lug 6, and a leaf ofthe `hinge opposite that to Which'the ratchet-arm 6 is aiiixed is provided with a pivoted pawl `7- and a spring 7 a, having two seats-one to hold the -pawl in engagement with the tooth and the other to hold the pawlv out of enga ement with the tooth. The operation of t e hinge is as follows: Ii the seat and back are in the position de icted in Fig. 1 and it is desired to convert t e couch into a bed, the seat is lifted to a vertical position, thereby depressing the back to a horizontal position. hen b pushinv the seat slightly farther toward t e back the paw] is forced out of enagement with the tooth in the arm 6 and eld out of engagement by the lower notch in the spring 7 a, after which the seat is free to be lowered to the position indicated by Fig. 2-"- the bed-forming position; but when the seat is-thus lowered the lug 6 reshifts the pawl to the other notch in the spring, in which position it willagain engage the ratchet-tooth when the seatis again raised to vertical position.` Any sort ot device for temporaril latching the back in an angular position. with respect to the seat can be provided, and l do not limit myself to the use of the device shown.
The two inner uppercorners of the seattrame are each provided with a trunnion 8,
ge 4, and the ends 1 of the ame are provided with slotted runner bearings 9, in' which the trunnions are supported and are capable of 'being moved horizontally. The slots of the'bearinffs 9 are, however, made at their rear ends with an auxiliary bearing 9a recessed below the lower edge of the slot, and into these bearings 9 the trunnions can fall to latch the seat and hack from horizontal movement in the slot when the seat and bellck are in position to form the couch and a so when they are manipulated to form the bed.
While the seat is raised to the osition inholds the trunnion down in the vbearing 9a; v
-IOO
but when the seat is released and lowered to the position seen. in Figa 4 the trunnions by reason of their eccentric location with respect to the pintle 5 and by reason of the relatively fixed position of the back is thrown out of the bearing e, and the two partsthe seat and back-are free to be drawn toward the front, so that the ends 1% shall be substantially equally divided between the seat-portion and back portieri to form an ample head and foot board for the bed. While the end piece shown does not constitute a full headboard, yet it will besulicient to retain the pillows, &c., in place.
Oftentimes a customer willd'esire upholstery of a design, material, or color dferent from that which happens to be in the frame. So to permit the withdrawal of the back and seat and the substitution of those containing another style of upholstering the runnerbearings 9 are made open at the forward ends,
Staate with a small matching piece 9b screwed in place toclose the opening after the seat and back have been put in place.
What'I claim, and desire to eecure'by Letters Patent, is
In a combined couch andk bed, the combination of the base, end pieces secured thereto, runner-bearings provided with depressed auxiliary bearings at their rear ends, a seat and back hinged together, trunnions rejecting eccentrically with respect to the nge of the seat and back and engaging the runnerbearings, and means whereby th'e said seat and back may be locked in and unlocked from angular relation to each other.
In testimon7 whereof affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
