DEVICE FOR DRESSING SAWS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed February 15, 1905. Serial No. 245,736.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS WILEY RoAoH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lyman, in the county of Skagit and State of Washington, have invented a new and Improved Device for Dressing Saws, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates particularly to a device for use as a gage in connection with the operation of swaging the drag-teeth of crosscut or drag saws.
The object of the invention is primarily to provide means which will prevent injury of the cutting-teeth by the application of the gage to the saw and I attain this end by certain peculiar features which will be fully set forth hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate as an example the preferred embodiment of my invention, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of the invention on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device in use with parts broken away, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the sheaths which I employ.
The device is provided with a body 10, having ribs 15 adapted to engage the side of the saw, as shown in Fig. 1. The body 10 has two overhanging shelves 11 and 12, which are adapted to engage the cutting-teeth of the saw when the gage is in use. In order to prevent the metallic shelves or ledges 11 and 12 from dulling or otherwise injuring the cuttingteeth, I provide soft-metal sheaths 25, which are removably placed over the shelves or ledges and are engaged by the cutting-teeth. These soft-metal sheaths are preferably of copper and avoid dulling the edges of the sawteeth.
The body 10 of the device is provided with a guideway 16, in which a slide 18 is mounted. Said slide has a lug 22, engaged by a screw 23. The screw is held to turn in 'a forked portion 17 from the body 10 and is provided with a knurled slide 24, facilitating the operation of the screw. In this manner the slide 18 may be moved longitudinally in the slideway 16. V
21 indicates a set-screw for clamping the slide 18 in the desired adjustment.
The shelves 11 and 12 are spaced apart to form an opening 14, (indicated in Figs. 1 and 2,) and in this opening a laterally or horizontally turned extension 19 of the slide 18 is arranged. Said extension 19 forms a table, in which an opening 19 is produced to receive the point of the drag-teeth of the saw, as best shown in Fig. 2. The table or extension 19 is turned downward and inward and provided with a hook 20, which is adapted to receive a file for use in sharpening or dressing the saw, as will be understood from the prior art.
In the use of the invention for swaging the drag-teeth the parts are adjusted as shown in Fig. 2', and the slide 18 is moved to that position which will place the points of the drag-teeth projecting above the table for the distance which said teeth are to be swaged. This having been done, a suitable instrument is placed against the inner or adjacent faces. of the points of the drag-teeth and said instrument struck with a hammer or the like, swaging down the points of the teeth, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, thus leaving the point of the cutting-tooth projecting farther than the drag-teeth and placing the saw in condition for effective operation.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A saw-gaging device comprising a body having an overhanging shelf broken by an opening therein, a slide mounted on the body and having a table adapted to lie in said opening for the purpose specified, means for mountin and holding the slide, and relatively soft-metal sheaths removably fitted on the shelf respectively at the sides of the opening therein 2. A saw-gaging device having a body with a ledge at right angles thereto adapted to lie opposite the teeth of the saw, and a removable sheath of soft metal embracing said ledge and adapted to engage the saw.
