Description

No. 818,157. PATENTED APR. 17, 1906.
' D. F. GEIGER I BELT REEL.
W/T/VESSES. lNVE/VTOR Z7 I im M I v AITOHNE YS DAVID FRANKLIN GEIGER, OF BARLOW, NORTH DAKOTA.
BELT-REEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 17, 1906.
Application filed September 18,1905. Serial No. 278,927.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID FRANKLIN GEI-' GER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Barlow, in the county of Foster and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and Improved BeltReel, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in reels for winding up and holding drivingbelts on shredders, threshing-machines, and the like, the object being to provide a reel of simple and novel construction and so arranged that a belt may be quickly and easily wound thereon.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the general description.
I will describe a belt-reel embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a belt-reel embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan thereof, and Fig. 3 is a front view of a beltengaging device employed.
The frame of the device comprises front members 1, which are inclined upwardly and rearwardly, connecting with the rear members 2. This frame preferably consists of angle-iron, as indicated in the drawings; but it may be of wood and otherwise shaped without departing from the spirit of my invention. I
The reel 3 has its shaft-bearings in the front members 1 of the frame, and on the shaft is a gear-wheel 4, meshing with a winding-pinion 5, on the shaft of which is a crankhandle 6, and also on the shaft of the pinion 5 at the crank end, as here shown, is a flanged pulley 7, over which a brake-head 8, of flexible material, such as steel, passes. This brake-band is connected at one end to a member 1 of the frame, and connected with the other end is a tension-spring 9, the said spring also connecting to a lever 10, pivoted on a rear member 2 of the frame and having a lug 11 for engaging with a locking-lug 12, attached to a shaft 13, having bearings in the rear members 2 of the frame, and rigidly at-' tached to this shaft 13 is a tension-plate 14 for engaging with the belt wound upon the reel, as will be hereinafter described.
Connected to the reel 3 is a strap 15, carrying a belt-engaging device or latch consisting of a frame 16, having vertically-disposed portions connected by a horizontal portion at the top. Pivoted in the vertically-disposed portions are belt-engaging devices consisting of arms 17 for engaging with the under side of the belt-lifting arms 18, which are arranged at an acute angle relatively to the arms 17, and arranged at an acute angle to the arms 18 are locking-arms 19, the ends of which are beveled and are designed to engage in notches 20 of latches 21, pivoted in the horizontal or upper portion of the frame. Pivotally con.- nected to the latches 21 are extensions 22, which when projected outward engage at their inner ends with pins 23, secured in the latches, and are held yieldingly in engagement with said pins by means of springplates 24.
At the lower end of the front members of the frame is a yoke 25, through which the belt and the strap 15 passes, and the belt, during its preliminary winding on the reel, will pass over an idler-roller 26, which is also arranged in the lower portion of the front members of the frame.
When the machine is in operation, the belt 27 passes from the driving-wheel of a steamengine or other motor and engages around the pulley 28 on a shredder or the like, and at this time, of course, the belt-engaging device 16 will be out of engagement with the belt. When the machine is to be stopped and the belt wound upon the reel, the belt is to be released from the driving-wheel of the engine and the engaging device 16 manually forced over the upper stretch of the belt, and the upper side of the belt, if engaging with the arms 18, will move the same upward, so that the arms 17 will press against the under side of the belt and the arms 19 be moved into engagement with the latches 21. By moving the extensions 22 downward to the position indicated by dotted lines at the right side of Fig. 3 the belt-engaging device may pass freely through the yoke 25 when the reel is turned. When the belt is completely wound upon the reel, it may be held in such position by turning the tension plate 14 upward against the belt, as indicated in Fig. 1, where it will be held by the parts 12 and 11 engaging one with the other and through the agency of the spring 9.
When it is desired to unwind the belt as it is drawn outward, it will be prevented from too freely moving by means of the tension device, and as the projections or extensions 22 engage with the side members of the yoke 25 the latches will be raised out of engagement with the arms 19, thus permitting the belt to drop onto the pulley 28.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a device of the character described, a
frame, a reel mounted in the frame, a strap connected to said reel, and a belt-engaging device attached to the strap, said engaging device comprising a frame, arms mounted to swing in said frame for engaging the under side of the belt, and latching-arms for holding said first-named arms in engagement with the belt,
2, A device for the purpose described comprising a frame, a reel mounted in the frame, a gearing for rotating the reel, a strap attached to the reel, a frame secured to the free end of the strap and having vertically-dis posed portions, belt-engaging arms pivoted in said vertically-disposed port1ons,lifting-arms attached to the first-named arms and divergent therefrom, locking-arms divergent from said second-named arms, latches pivoted in the horizontally disposed portion of said frame, spring pressed extensions on said latches, and a yoke on the front members of the first-named frame for engaging said extensions to release the latches.
8. A device for the purpose specified, comprisin a main frame, a reel arranged in the main ame, a strap extended from the reel, a belt-engaging device on the free end of said strap, and a spring-pressed tension device for engaging with the belt wound upon the reel.
4. A device for the purpose specified, comprising a main frame, a reel mounted therein, a gear-wheel on the shaft of the reel, a pinion meshin with the gear-wheel, a crank on the shaft of the pinion, a flanged pulley on said shaft, a metal strap attached at the inner end to the main frame and passing over said flanged pulley, a spring attached to the free end of said metal strap, an arm pivoted to the frame and connected to said sprin said arm having a lug, a shaft pivoted in the ame, a lug on said shaft for engaging with the firstnamed lug, a tension-plate mounted on said shaft, a strap extending from the reel, and a belt-engaging device attached to the free end of said strap.
5. In a device of the character described, a main frame, a reel mounted therein, a strap extended from the reel, a belt-engaging de vice connected to said strap and comprising a frame having downwardly-extending members, arms pivoted in said downwardly-extending members for engagement against the under side of the belt, lifting-arms arranged at an acute angle from the first-named arms, locking-arms extended from the first-named arms and having beveled upper ends, latches pivoted in the frame and having notches to receive said inclined ends, extension-pieces on said latches, pins in the latcheswith which said extension-pieces engage to revent movement in one direction, springs or holding the extensions in normal position, and a yoke on the main frame for engaging with said extensions to release the latches from the arms having beveled ends.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID FRANKLIN GEIGER.
