IMPROVEMENT' IN HDRSpE-SHOES.

To LL WHOM IT MAY ooNeERN:
Beit known that I, BENJAMIN LADD, of Ottumwa, Wapello county, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Shoes; and I do hereby declare the followingfdescription and accompanying drawings are suiiicient to enable any person skilled inthe art or science toivhich it most nearly n.ppertains to make and uso my said invention or improvements without further invention or experiment.
Thel nature of my invention and improvements consists in providing a. horse-shoe with clips, to fasten it te `the hoof, so arranged that the innerfnee of the e1ip`, where it joins the shoe, shall be in a. line with o'r even with `thegout'er 'edge of the top face of the shoe; also, in combining withthe clips,l soA arranged, two or more'spurs upon the top face of the shoe, and in combining with clips two orrnore nail-holes through each Side df the ShOv- In the -followi`ng description of my improvements, I refer to the accompanying drawings, forming partei' this specification-,-
Figure 1 being a plan, and i Figure 2 an elevation of my improved horse-shoe I The shoe A has the'clips B B arranged around the sides and front, extending about one inch in height above the top ofthe shoe, and providedwith spurs, C C, projecting from the inside, nenr the-top.
'li-he clips B Bare so arrnnged'on the shoe that the inner face of each clip, 'where it joins the top face of the shoe, may coincide or be even with the outer edge of. the face of the shoe, so that the hoof may be 'made to {it and cover the whole face of the shoe, without any cuts or indentations being required in it to receive the clips. ,The better to secure thehoof in place, and prevent its moving or slippingnpon the shoe, ,two or more spurs, D D, are formed upon the top face of the shoe, to penetrate the hoof when the shoe is applied to it.
My improved shoe lmy be made of wrought iron or of malleable east iron. I prefer the latter, as being' both cheaper and more durable. i L
' To apply the (shoe, the hoof should vfirstbe tlrimmed, and shaped to iit the face oi' n shoe of a. suitnblesize for it, and the toe o'f the shoe being tir-st applied to the toe oi' th'e hoof, the spurs on the face of the shoe should be driven into the bottom of the hoof by striking the bottom of the shoe with a light hammer. The foot should then 'be put down, and the opposite footl taken up, to throw greater weight upon the shoe,'when the clips may be bent'up to the hoof, andthe spurs thereon driven into it.
I make two or more nail-holes, E E, in each 'side of the, shoe, in order that in ease the clips, or some of them, should get broken o' before the shoe is, worn out, or if :for any other reason it shoul'd be desirable, the
shoe may be fastened on with nails, and the use of it saved. i
`I do not claim broadly fastening shoes to horses" feet by means of clips, as they were well known prior to my invention; neither do I claim clips made with their outer sides even with the edge of theshoe, so as to require notches to be cut the edge of the hooi to receive the clips, as described in Warren Hinds patent,
No. ?6,449; but
What I claim as my invention and improvement in the above-described horse-shoe is- .L Making the inside face oi'the clip, where it joins the top face of the shoe, in a line with vor even with the outer edge of snidtop face, substantially as described.
2. In combination with clips arranged as above claimed, I claim one or more spurs on the top oi the shoe, substantially aspdescrib'ed.
8. The shoe, as above described, provided with :nail-holes, as a. means of fastening it on, if the clips, or
