Be it known that I, INDE F. GORDON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Crawford and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to closures for bottles, jugs, and the like articles; and its primary object is to provide a new and useful device of this character which is adapted to be so secured in applied position as to necessitate the breaking of the closure before the contents of the receptacle can be removed, and so as to leave a portion of the closure attached to the receptacle to indicate that the original contents thereof has been removed, whereby all liability of a substitute article being sold for the original is obviated.

A further object of the invention is to provide a closure which is cheap of construction and easy to manufacture and apply to a receptacle.

WVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and wherein The figure is a vertical sectional view of the neck and upper portion of a bottle, illustrating the application of my improved closure thereto.

The upper portion of the neck is provided with a laterallydisposed annular flange 5, and at a point immediately adjacent the seat 4 with an annular recess 6.

7 designates the closure or cap, which is constructed of glass and which is circular in cross-section and of a diameter equal to that of the enlarged portion 3, so as to give to the bottle a neat appearance. The closure inits applied position rests upon the seata and is provided at its lower edge with an inwardlydirected annular flange 9. The closure or cap provides a space between theinner opposing faces of the vertical portion 10 and the neck 1 and between the upper edge of the neck 1 and the top portion 8 of the closure. A cork 11 is inserted in applied position, and cement 11 or other securing element is positioned in the spaces between the closure and neck, so as to securely retain the closurein applied position against surreptitious removal.

The application of the closure to the bottle may be described in the following manner: The cork 11 is first inserted in applied position. Then the closure is inverted and partially filled with cement and then the upper portion of the neck 1 is inserted within the closure, which causes the cement to completely fill the spaces between the closure and neck. In view of the fact that the cement is interposed between the flanges 5 and 9 and as a portion thereof will occupy the recess 6 all liability of the closure being removed without first breaking the closure is obviated. To remove the closure, all that is necessary is to crush the same at the point of intersection of the top and vertical portions 8 and 10, respectively. The securing element retains the vertical portion 10 of the closure in its applied position after the removal of the top portion 8, thus giving to the bottle an unfinished appearance, whereby it willbe apparent to a purchaser that the same does not contain the original contents.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and advantages of the invention will be understood without a further extended description.

Changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
