T0 ALL-WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be itknown that I, G. S. GARTH, of Mill Hall, in the county of Clinton, andState of Pennsylvaniahave invented a new and useful Improvement in. Wagon-Axles; and I do hereby declare that the following'is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art tomake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- The drawing represents a. side view of an uxle-skein, provided with my improvements.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. The object'of this invention is to provide the means for lessening the friction of the hub on the axle-arm, and also to strengthen the latter at theshoulder. I}
' It consists of two frictional bands, one of which is formed with a dove-tailed annular slot, fitting upon a dove-tailed collar, formed on the axle-arm at the shoulder of the same. The bands are cast on the axle-arm,
and are of any suitableanti-friction vtnet'al, as brass, composition, or Rabbit-metal, so called. To confer greater strength to the shoulder; I also employa separate band d, of iron orother metal, which encircles the raised portion of the band 6 and the'shoulder f.. I v
The collare may'be made of any suitable dove-tailed character.
. I desire to be understood as not limiting myself to the precise form of the bands, as they may be variously modified without departing from the principle of my invention..
I am aware of the patent granted to Thomas Falvey, dated February 5,1867, toran axle-skein, provided with collars of different material from that composing the body of the skein, saidcollars being cast on irregular screw-threads, but as this forms no part of my invention, I do not Wish to claimrit; but, having thus described my invent ion-- I claim as newyand desire to secure by Letters Pntent- 1. An axle provided with collars a b of anti-friction metal, the latter (6) being cast on tea dove-tailed collar, e, which is formed o'nor fitted to the aizle,cas herein shown and described, when the raised portions of the band Ii and shoulderf are encircled by a strengthening-band, 02, asset forth for the purpose specified.
2. The strengthening-band cl encircling the raised portions of the band 6 and shoulder f, substantiallv as herein shown and described for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 6th day of June, 1868. G. S. GARTH;
