IMPROVEMENT IN SPIKE-MACHINES.
iigs Segnale nftmh is im ttfsttcinrs ateut inn ing aan nf tte 5mm.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN;
Beit known that I, WILLIAM HAMILTON Snonnnnncnn, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spike-Machines; and I do herebyv declare the following-telic a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specificati-on. Y i
My invention relates to anv improved means, device, or machine, whereby a number of spikes` are simultaneously out oi?, headedwup, and pointed', from a continuous bar of heated iron, at each stroke of the machine.
In the accompanying draivingsv Y I Figure 1 is a. partly-sectionized front elevation of a machine embodying my inventiomin the position in which the bar of iron (here represented by blue lines) is first introduced for cutting and'forming, this posit-ion being the extremity of the upward stroke ofthe machine.
y Figures 2 andA 3 exhibit the same views of vthe machine in subsequent positions, g. 2 being the 'position just preparatory to heading up, thc spikes in this stage being cut oil` in lengths and forced down to an inclined bed, where they are forcibly hold for heading and sharpening. Fig. 3 is thc position of the machine after thespikes are headed up 'and pointed, the heading and sharpening being accomplished simultaneously.
` Figure 4 isa rear elevation of the machine, exhibiting the devices for the movement or operation of the cutter-head. y
Figure 5 is a sectional plan, showing` the devices'for securing the bar of iron sideways, and for forcing oli' tho spikes' from the machine when completed. v 4
The bed A of the machine is provided with tliostationary cutting-off steelings a,'inclined beda, vertically dove-tailed back a, and slides a,`on which the holding and throwing-cil` devices reciprocate.
` I3 is the vertically-reciprocatingputter-head, confined and sliding within thc dove-tails am of the back o".
The cutter-head has secured. toit a series of steelings, b, which combine the functions of both knives and clamps, and is operated by means of bain C, journalled in the back, al', cam D, on the driving-shaft E, andc'onnections F G HAI J. v x I Fitted within the cutter-head B is the diagonally-slidingheading-block K, the shanks c of which slide between the knives b. fThis/'block K'is opcratedby-means of cam L, in shaft E, by the connectionl of swinging yoke M and Pitman N.y
The pointing 4of the spikes is accomplishedby means of the tumblers I), in the operation of which a.
rolling pressure is brought to bear upon the ends of the spikes, suiiicient to give them the sharpened ends,`thc.
pressure being against the knives which .are shaped, as shown, to form one side of the chamber.' The tumhlcrs rest in lpockets in the ends of' the vibrating-arms Q, and are operated by yoke M and connections R S T.
Y are sliding blocks, connected together by'means of links w w, and adaptedto receive a reciprocating motion through llever W and eam-groovcd'head X. The block U acts to carry forward andsecnre sideways the bar of iron to be cut, and the block V, on thc return stroke, by means of prongs pushes out the completed spikes. The block U lis recessed on its face, ata, to correspond with'similar recesses in the hed A, in order to gire space for vthe formation of the headsvcf the spikes.
Opration.
The bnr of iron isinscrted on the upward stroke of the machine, and is carried forward and securely held sideways by means ol block U. The critter-.head B then descends, cuts oil` the iron in lengths, vand forces the blanks onto the inclined beds a', where they are securely held by the clamping-knives b. The heading-block 4Kis then pushed forward, and they tumhlers P moved to position, iig. 3, this simultaneous action suhcing -to head up and point all thc'spikes in the manner shown in Iig. After this process, the cutter-head rises, the block or side clamp retires, andthe block .V, by means of prongs rv, forces out the nished spikes. The bar of iron, blanks, and 'nished spikes, are shown in blue, figs. 1, 2, and 3, and are also represented byletter Z. The devices I R S T, I do not claim as entirely my own invention.; they will form the subject of a. disi tuct and joint application hereafter.v
I claim herein 'as new, and of' my invention Y I 1. The herein-'described series of dies a', cutters a b, and headers 7c, all arranged, relatively to the other parts of the machine, substantially as shown, and adapted to make more than one spike at cach operation from a. single bar or rod.
2. The arrangement, in th'e cutter-head B, of the head-Block K, headers k lc, and cutters b b, substantially in the nia-nner set forth. I
3. The arrangement of thel sliding block U,. links w w, head V, ejecting-rods a: :c z, lever W, and cam X, es described. v
' In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand.
