oaZZ whom it may concern:- Y
Be it known that we, EUGENSOLLER, re-
siding at Basel, and FRIEDRioH HOTTINGER,
Qresidmg at Berne, Switzerland, citizens ol the Republic of Switzerland, have lnve'nted certain new and useful Improvements in Change-` Speed Gearing, of which the Afollowing.; is a specification.
This invention vrelates toa change-speed gear, more particularly for use with motorcars, comprising a number of spur-wheels loosely mounted on the driving and driven spindles and capable of being secured to theml byrneans of adjustable' clutches, the number and sizesof the, said wheelsdepending upon thevnurnber of speeds desired, as Well as upon the speed'ratios. Each spurwhecl on the driving-spindle always engages with a spur-wheel on the driven spindle, so that the speed ratio of each pair of engaging wheels is constant. The corresponding coupwith a modied construction thereof.
Figure 1 shows a front elevation; Fig. 2, a partly-sectional plan view; Fig. 3, a crosssection on line AB C D, nd Fig. 4 a crosssection on line G H E Fgof Fig. `2. Fig. 5 shows part of the front elevation, and Fig. 6 par-t of the side elevation on an enlarged scale. Fig. 7is a diagrammaticview showing a modified arrangement of part et kthe mechanism. i
in the iront wallsofa lcasing g arevmou'ntedI two parallel driving and driven shaft-s a and Sb, respcctivcly-` Or .each oii'thesejtwo shafts aremounted loose six'spunwheels '1' to 6A and 1 tol 6 of varying sizes, thejspur-wheel of, one shaft being always -lii vengagement with f that of theater-Sima having desmendeX-that Yis to slay', lthe'wheell '2f engages with twelve wheclsareprovidedyon jone' side with projections, forming. parts'y offclutches,y said projecting and partly as a reen-A hand side and on the next one on the same shaft-on the left-hand side, on the vthird one again on. the right-hand side., and soon. The otherside of the hub is plain. Between the projections of each two adjoining spurwheels `are mounted coupling-clutches 'c' c c" andd d d", provided with correspond- 4ing projections onvboth sides and mounted on the Shaft so that they cannot rotate,` l They clutches care slightly wider than the clutchesV d, or the projections of the former are sli htly but areflongitudin'ally movable on it.
longer than `those of the latter. Each c utch is engaged by a forkf, pivoted on two arms e;
The four arms e for the clutches c and d orK c, and d or c" and d" are secured to'one andthe same crank-shaft h orv h or 7amthat is to say, (see Fig. 3,) the clutches; say
0" and d, are secured to h-'so that the correspondingclutches are thus operated simultaneously, the coupling-clutches c, owing to their :longer projections, engaging with one or the other ofthe spur-wheels slightly earlier than the clutches y l To the outer ends ci the crank-shafts h h h" are secured cranks k 7c k", which are Patentedmarcheo, 190e.,
provided neartheir free ends with roller-carrying pins i. v in grooves of toothed cams n n n" of the same size which 'engage always with one another. The grooves of the three cams rn/ n n are endless, being circular along twothirds of the circumference', (two hundred and forty degrees,) while on one-sixth of the circumference (sixty degrees) they form a projecting angle, an 'on the remaining sixth a The rollers in question engage j rentering angle, as canbe seen in Fig. 1. v
The three cams are so arranged with reference to their different direction 'of rotation vthat during a complete revolution in the dil .95 cranks are in turn moved iirstfrorn 'the central position into the left-hand-end position rection-of the arrow, Fig. 1, `all tlie threel and then into the right-hand-end position, the corresponding pairs [of clutches being shittedin turn iirst also tothe left hand and then tothe. right hand-that is to say, only `onefcliitchon the shaft a and one on `the, lshaft?)v are operated, but never several pairs of; clutches together.
To the etensionof the hub is secured a toothed wheel m4 withwhichiem.

be fixed, h' means of a pawl, in twelve positions on a racket w, provided with a corresponding 4number of recesses or notches of unequal depth.' The distance between each two recesses or notches l II-Vl for the pawl 'andr the ratio between the toothed segment o and the toothed wheel' lm are calculated so that when the hand-lever p is turned through a portion corresponding to the said distance the cams are turned through an angle of sixty degrees. The shallower projections on the 'bracket w serve for ixing the lever in positions corresponding to those positions o' the three cams in which the rollers on all the three cranks lc c c are in the circular portion of the cam-grooves or at a point situated at the same distance from the center as the grooves in question.
in order to eiect the change of a high to' a much lower speed, or vice versa, leaving out those in between-s21y from the second speed.
on to the iithwthe three cam-disks are mounted so -as to be longitudinally adjust- ,of the spur-wheel i".
able on their journals. Against the centers oit' the inner sides of the two outer cams rest forks s, mounted on a spindle t, which can be actuated by means of a pedal u and lever o. Gn the said spindle are also mounted three pairs of lugs tor the urpose of fixing between thern the free en s of the cranks le le" c", so as to prevent them from swinging laterally while the rollers are out of engagement with the grooves of the cam-disks. The hubs of the three cams are connected together by a cross-bar yin such manner that they can only be moved all together and in such manner asto alwaysremain parallel to their n'ormal position and all in one plane. On the journals of the two outer cams n and n" are mounted helical s rings z' for the purpose of always returning t e cross-bar y and the cams to their normal position.
The manipulation and the working of the change-s eed gear described during driving are as fol ws: After disenga ing the pawl the hand-lever p is swung to tlie right-say so far as to bring it to engage with the notch marked of the quadrant w. In this swinging movement the toothed segment o particiates engaging with the toothed wheel in, heresult'is that the cam-disks are turned to a corresponding extent in the direction indicated by the arrow, Fig. l. During this movement the crank k', the roller or which engages with the groove of the cam n, will be operatedirst, for the rollers' of the cranks 7c and lc, are still in the circular portion of the rooves of thecams n and n". The crank 'therefore will only be slightly moved to the teit, the result being thatrst the clutch c willyengage with the projection oi the spurwheel l', and a moinont later the clutch d will come into eneagement with the projections :is soon as the clutch c has been thrown into gear, 1,and therefore 1, also willdicgin to participate in the rotation, and at the next moment the u'ojections oi the latter can he engaged by t lose of the clutch d. After the coupling lms'hecn etlected the rotation of the shaft it will hc transmitted to the shaft b, which will have a speed in proportion to the ratio between thc s tir-.wheels l and l. .ltit is desired to t lrow into gear the next highest spoed, thou the hand-lever after its pawl has been disengaged is moved farther to thc right until thcy pawl engages with the notch li. rThis morcment causes the cams f/if to again turu through an angle of sixty degrees; but again only7 the movement of n results iu its couplings boing thrown into gear. Owing to the shape ol` the groove of a the roller engaging with it will 'pass over a point at the same distance from the center as 'the ,'fircular portion oll tho groove into a position situated nearer to thc center, the result of' this beingr the t the crank lc will pass from its lcft-hand-eud position over the central position lo thc right-hamlend position, which again results in the shilling o1 the clutches c and dl to thc right. l? or onel moment the couplingr is thrown couipl'etely out ol' geur, and thou lirst tho clutch c" will come into engagement with L aud immediately afterward d with 2". ll it he desired to change, say, from tho second speed direct to the sixth, the houd-lover p is ylirst turned until the pawl first cugagcs with the Shallower notch immediately l'ollowiug that on which it was hel'orc. Thou thc pedal lu is depressed and the shaft t turned to such au extent that the pairs of lugs J, mounted ou it, iix between them the troc cud oi ull the three cranks and the l'orks s press thc cams connected by the cross-har yy outward against the action of the helical spriugs's to such un extent that the rollers ol' lhc craulis /tH k" become disengaged from thc grooves ol` the cam-(ilisks, so that the latter become l'rccly rotatable. Then, audl not until thou, the hand-lever p is turned further to thcr right until the pawl engages with tlo lust ol' the shallow notches, whereupon thc. pcdol u is again released, thus releasingT thc. cranks. and the cams will return uudcl' thc ullucuco of thc action ol' the springs lo thcir uoruml position. The handlcvcr p is now liuully turned into its outermost position, the howl being brought into the notch Vl, the crank la alone being operated duringr that Inove- -ment, which will result iu the clutches c und TOC IIC
