Description

STo all zdhom, it may concern.-
j LEVI F. KNODERER, oFo'oLUMBUs, onio.
Be it known thatI I, LEVI F. KNODERER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio,.have invented certain new and use.- ul Improvements in Regulating-Valves 'for Gas-Burners, of whichl the following is a' specification.
My lnvention relates to new and `useul improvements in regulating-valves` for gasurners. l
The object of the invention'is to provide a valve with means whereby the same is r'e-` vented from entirely closin 'so as to a ow 'af supfply of gas flowing in tie regular direcmeans being adjustable so that the amount of gas supplied to the pilot-light may be regulated an so that' the valve may be entirely closed, if desired. By so constructing the valve all by-pi es', such as are employed for vleading a supp y of gas to the pilot from the valve-chamber after the valve is closed, are
- obviated, and. a simple a'ml'compact device is provided..
Finally, the object ol the invention is to provide a deviccof the character described that will be strong, durable', and ellicient and one in rwhich' the severaliparts will not be liable to get out of working order.
With the above andother objects in view the invention consists of the novel details of `construction and operation, a referable embodiment of which is describe in the speciiiat the other end with an internally-threaded cation and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein-` j i y Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view ofthe valve-casing, showing the valv'e partly open to supply the pilot-light and Fig.'
2 is a similar view showing the valve entirely closed and indicating its full open positionin dotted lines.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates 'the valve-casing, which is provided at onev end with an internally-threaded inlet Zaand outlet 3. The casing is divided by a w'all 4, inthe horizontalportion of which an annular valve-seat 5 is provided. A conical valve 6,
' having'downwardly-proj ecting guiding-wings 7, is arranged to close onthe seat `5, thewings. passing through the dividing-wall and maintaining the valve in alinement during its movement.' A stem 8 `extends upwardly from the valve 6, passing through a guide- Sleeve 9, which is recessed at its lower end vSpecification o f Letters Patent. indication and Augusizs, 1905. serial No. 276,006.
or mamtaining a pilot-light, the said through the valve-seat an 3 in the regular way. The nut I5 can be 'E-GuLATlNe-VALVE FOR GAS-BURNERS.
Patented March 13, 1906.
whic engage with an internally screwthreaded collarl 11, formed on the casing 1.* A' coiled spring 12 is confined about-the stem, 8
and rovided with external 'screw-threads '10, n
between the valve 6 and the` reoessedfortion of the sleeve 9, said spring being un At its upper end the sleeve 9 is provided with afsuitable st'uIing-box "13, which is covered by a screwthreaded -capnut 14, engaging with the sleeve and having the stem passing er ten.- sion and acting to force the valve to its seat.`
through its central portion. That portion of the 'stem projectin beyond the cap 14 is Screw-threaded an receives an adjustingnut 15, which is adapted to impinge on the cap and prevent-the :valve 6 from c osin on the valve-seat 5 when itis desired'toa low .suilicient gas to pass through the valve-casing to maintain apilot-light. The eXtreme upper end of the valve-stem is provided with an eye 16, which receives a chain 17,- by
which the valve is manipulated.
In the class of furnaces and heaters-.with l which my valve is designedto be used it`is customary to provide a Suitable regulatingi means, which is connected with the valve and the parts, thereof for controlling the same. A convey a su .ply of gas totheburners to Some means is always provided to;
maintain a pi ot-light when the. supply is cut oii' in the burners roper,'4 the pilotin lto light the urners when the supplyva veis opened, the intensit 'of .the flame of the burners being governed Ayv the supply of gas which is controlledY by the regu `ating lght serv- .mechanism through lthe valve. With -my l val-ve instead of leading a su ply of gas from the casing .aboutthe inlet alter the valve is closed to maintain the pilot Iv adjust the nuft 15 so that. the valve 6 will not close on its seat 5, thus allowing a suppl `of gas 'to flow dr out of the outlet minutely adjustedso as to control. the supply ofgas to the pilot. The cliain 17 being con- IOO Iiectedwithitheregulating mechanism willbe A drawn up, thus raising the valve and ernnt- 1 ting a greater supply of gas to pass t rrou h the casing when it ecomes necessary to lig t the burners. Should it bedesired at any time to have the valve entirely closed onits I Seat, the nut 15 may be turned on the valvestem,` as shown in Fig. 2, thus ermitting the valve to freely seat. Itis vto e noted that the adjusting-nut in,y no way interferes with theopen-ing of the ValVe, butv lspr'ovided solely for the purpose of controlling tlielseating thereof.'
I consider the simplicity of my valve one of its vital points and also the revision whereb the Valve may be partiall) tirely c osed,
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, isl The combination with afvalve-casing having a dividing-wall provided with a valveseat, of a reciprocating valve 'arranged above the Seat and adapted to close down thereon, a stem extending upwardly from the valve passing through and proj ecting, above the upper end ofthe valvecasing, a spring coiled y or enabout the valve-stern and confined between the valve and the up er end of the valve-easing, that portion of tile Valve-stem projecting above the valve-casing being screw-threaded, and a nut engaged with the threaded portion of the valve-stem adapted to contact with the valve-easing to p revent the Valve from seating a einst the tension of the coiled sring an arranged to be adjusted to permit t e valve to close on the seat.
.In testimony whereof I alljx my signature in presence of two witnesses. v -L. F. KNODERER.
