1,0 allv :wh/011?, t may concern.
Be itknown that I, LOUIS SCHAFFERT, a citizen of the United States, residin at Walton, in the county of Delaware an yState of New York, have invented new and useful Im-y provementsin Shovels, of which the lfollowing is a specification.
. especially for` use in removing IO 0 over the surface and .one wherein the'fshovel :may be readily manipulated for 'causing its i. forward active end to override the surface ob-.
structions.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises` the novelfeatures of construction and combination'of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 -is a front elevation of a lshovel embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation'of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation viewed in the direction of the arrow in Fi 1.
y Referring to the drawings, 1 e'signates the blade, 4havm a' forward sharpened edge I2 and rovide with an upwardly and outward y curved delivery portion or moldboard 3, extending diagonally across the blade 2 around adjacent the forward end to the rear end of the latter, said portion being adapted to direct the snow-laterally and deliver the same at onek side of the blade. Riveted `to the rear face of the blade 1, at a point adja-l elevation, as shown, andarranged to 5o The blade is attached to a handle 8, procent the forward edge of the latter,'is a transversely-extending strengthening member or strap 4, having a main central depending portion 0r lug 5 and auxiliary bearing portions or lugs 6, arranged, respectively, adjacent the ends of the strap, said lugs being all of substantially semi-elllptical form in said project outward from and at right angles to t face of the blade, the central lug 5 being formed with a socket 7.
e surand having its lower end seated in the socket 7 the vblade being fixed to the Vhandle by means of a rivet or other fastening member 10 'and a strap 1 1, which extends transversely across the blade at a point between its ends and in addition to securing the handle in lace subservesr the further function of a race for stren thening the shovel. In practice t e shovel is advanced over the ground-surface, with the edge 2 in contact u ward onto the blade and be directed latera yfrom and delivered at one side of the lat# ter, through the medium of the delivery portion or moldboard 3, and this during a continuous operation of the device. In action if vided .at its upper end with an end piece 9. i
'with the-latter, whereupon the snow will pass the ed e 2 meets an obstruction the'rear end of the andle 8 is moved downwardly, where-v upon the blade will rock upon the bearing members 5 and 6 asa fulcrum, thus lifting the cutting edge` 2 sufficiently tofreely override the'obstruction.
From the foregoing it is apparent that I roduce aA simplel .device adnnrablyadapted or the attainment ofthe ends inview, it bein lunderstoodthat minor changes in the deta1 s herein set forth may be resorted to withtion.
'Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A tool of the type described comprising a handle, ablade carried thereby, anda stra secured to one face of the blade and' provide with curved bearingelugs.
2. VA tool of the type described comprising a handle, a blade carried thereby and pro' vided with a sharpened edge, a bracin member attached to one face of the bla e at a oint adjacent said edge, said bracing memer being provided with a socket lto receive the adjacent end of the vhandle and havingr outwardly-extending curved bearing-lugs. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses. l
