Description
. PATENTED MAR. 13,1906; M. A. B. LUHRS.- I
' FOLDING ATTACHMENT FOR'SBWING MACHINES.
APPLICATION nun Ar'niza. 1905.
To ZZ whom it may concern.-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.MARGARET -ANNA ELIZABETH LUHRS. or HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY. FOLDING \ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-NIAHINES.
Be it known that I, MARGARET ANNA ELIZA- BETH LUHRS, a citizen of the United States,
and a resident of Hoboken, in the county.
of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding'Attachments for Sewing- Machines for Making Bias Folds forA plicationto Ladies Dresses, of which the ollowing is aspecification.
My invention'relates to a sewing-machine attachment for the making of bias folds, rumples, ruches, and corded or uncorded ruflles.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my folder attached to a sewing-machine. Fig. 2 is a plan view of my improvement. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of a part thereof on line 3 of Fig. 2.- The art marked 1 on the drawings represents the bed-plate of the sewing-machine.
The part marked A is the folder, consisting.
of a strip of sheet metal or other material of the'proper size bent to form a flattened oval orifice a with overlapping edges a and a leaving the longitudinal slot 0;.
tened orifice is of a width corresponding with the width of the material after it is folded. l B is the connecting-plate to which the folder is attached, and this,connecting-plate- I is secured to the bed of the machine by a thumb-screw C, passing through the slide D of the connecting-plate into an opening (not shown) in the bed of the machine- The slide D is rovided with an elongated opening d, whic enables the folder to be adjusted transverse of the machine. The connectingplate B is cut away at b 12 5 leaving thelongitudinal strips b b, to which the slide D is attached by the overturned ends d d andwhich permits the connecting-plate B and of course the folder carried thereby to be adjusted transverse of the machine.
E is the head of the machine and carries the usual presser-foot F, needle-bar G, and needle 9.
When the attachment is securedto the machine, it may be adjusted by loosening the thumb-screw Q, when it can be moved transversely of the machine, and the plate B may Specification of Letters Patent; Application filed A ril 2 1905. Serial lie-257,987.
Patented March 13, 1906.
be moved longitudinally of the machine bymoving it in either direction when the strips b and b are free to move through the overturned ends d (Z of the slide D. When the attachment is properly adjusted, it is clamped in position by the screw 0; The material is placed in the folder by turning over the edge of the cloth and folding the cloth and passing -Without any marking or any special skill.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A folding attachment for sewing-machines, consisting of a plate folded toform an open-edge flattened tube, one of the edges of said plate being straight and the other edge overlapping the straight edge leaving a slot between the two edges through which the material to be operatedon may be inserted, a plate extending from said tube, said plate be-v ing provided with strips, a slide connected to said strips and adapted to move longitudinally thereon, said slide havingan opening therein in a direction transverse to the strips, and adapted to receive a screw by which the attachment may be secured to the bed of a machine.
2. A folding attachment for sewing-ma chines consisting of a flattened tube one edge of which overlaps the other but with a longitudinal opening between through which the material is to be inserted, a plate secured to the tube, said plate having parallel 'strips, a
slide secured to move longitudinally .on said having parallel strips, a slide turned over the l In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my edges of the strips by which it is secured to hand, in the city, county, and State of New the strip and adapted to be moved longitudi- York, this 28th day of April, 1905.
nally thereof, said slide being provided with a, l MARGARET ANNA ELIZABETH mums. 5 longitudinal slot and a set-screw passing In presence of through the slot and into the bed of'the ma- J OHN J. RANAGAN chine. l T. R. RICHARDS.
