nogsugsssw Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. March 13,1906;
Application filed February 2, 1 906. I SerialNo. 243,? 97. g
.To all whom it 'may concern Beit known that I, WILLIAM HUME LOGAN,
a citizen'of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spiral Slideways; and I do declare the following to a be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap ertains to make and use the same, reference eing had to the ac.- companying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I Y
My invention relates to spiral slideways for fire-escapes and package-chutes, and has for its object to provide a switch or auxiliary chute for leading persons or packages from the slideway onto a floor or landing Intermethe switch or auxiliary chute.
diate the top and bottom of the slideway.
A further object of my invention is to provide a removable switch or auxiliary chute which can be inserted in the casing of the slideway and onto the slideway at a point intermediate the top and bottom of the slideway, said switch or auxiliary chute being instantly removable. v
With these objects 'in view my invention consists in the switch or auxiliary chute.
My invention also consists in the construction employed for securing the chute or switch in position.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
Figurel is an elevation of a portion of spiral slideway and cylindrical casing, showlng switch or auxiliary chute in an operative position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the switch or auxiliary chute. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken .on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4: is "a fragmentary detail sectional view of two flights or leaves of the slideway and Like numerals ofreference indicate the sahnlne parts throughout the several figures, in w c 1 indicates the cylindrical casing for the slideway, and 2 indicates the slideway within the casin said slideway being made up of a series 0 flights'or leaves 3, suitably secured to a central support 4 and secured. to
one another preferably by rivets 5. A doorway or opening 6 is provided in the cylin-- drical casing 1 at the predetermined point or points along the slideway, as shown in Fig. 1.
1 7 indicates the switch or auxiliary chute,
which, as shown, is provided with two or more extensions 8' on, the inner edge of the bottQIn. of the switch or chute, and, as shown inFig. 2, the side 9 of the chute is cut away at 10 for a purpose which will be hereinafterfully de= scribed, while the edge of the side 9 enters be tween the lapped edges 9 of the cylindrical jcaslng, as shown in Fig. 3; On the bottom of the switch or chute, as shown in Fig, 2 and in dotted lines in Fig. 3, are two or more 6 5' knees 1,1, constructed and arranged to engage the cylindrical casing 1, as shown in Fig. 4. i
Referring'to Fig. 4, it will be seenv that a strip 12 is arran ed between the leaves or flights 3, so that t e inner edge of the switch or chute 7 and the extensions 8 may be inserted between the leaves or flights, as 1 shown, in order to securely hold the chute-in position. v Having thus fullydescribed my invention, its operation is as follows: When it is desired to lead persons or packages from the slidein Fig. 4, and the inner edge of the side 9 butting against the central support, as shown,
while the knees 11 on the bottom of the chute myself to the exact co'nstruction as herein set 9 5 I forth, as various slight chan es may be made therein which would fall witiin the limit" and scope of my invention, and I consider myself clearly entitled to all such changes and modifications.
i What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The combination with a spiral slideway, of a casing therefor, said casing being pro- I05 vided with an opening therein, a switch or auxiliary chute independent of said slideway constructed to beinserted in said opening and to engage said slideway at an angle to' lead an object from said slideway through 110 said opening. 2. The combination with a spiral slideway,
of a casing therefor, said casing being prostructed to be placed on said slideway at a Vided with an opening therein, a switch or point intermediate the top and bottom of auxiliary chute independent of said slideway said slideway to lead an'object from said constructed to be inserted in said opening slideway. 5 and to removably engage said slideway at an In testimony whereof I afiix my signature 15 angle to lead an object from said slideway in presence of two witnesses. through said opening, and means for holding WILLIAM HUME LOGAN. said switch or auxiliary chute in position. Witnesses:
