WRENCH PIPE-JAWll Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Nov. 7, 1905.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that we, EMMERsoN THOMP- SON, of Gamebridge, county of Ontario, and THOMAS ARTHUR BROWN, of Toronto, county of York, Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, subjects of the King of England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrench Pipe-Jaws; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX.- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for wrenches; :and it consists in certain novel features in the detail and construction thereof, to be more fully described hereinafter and specifically pointed out in the claim.
The object of the invention is to provide a device which will be simple in construction and durable in operation and which. may be applied to awrench of the ordinaryconstruction, whereby the said wrench may be employed for holding pipes and the like to prevent them from turning or for turning the pipe.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a side view of a wrench of ordinary construction, showing the improved device in place and holding a section of pipe; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improved device.
In the drawings, 1 represents a portable member or jaw having a serrated lower surface2 and curved upper surface 3, which is also provided with serrations 3 and is adapted to engage between one of the jaws 4 of a Wrench 5 of ordinary construction and the pipe 6, which it is desired to hold or turn. The movable jaw 7 of thewrench 5, acting in conjunction with the parts mentioned, securely holds the pipe 6 within the wrench 5.
In operation the jawsltand'of the wrench 5 are separated, the portable jaw 1 placed within the wrench against one of the said jaws and the pipe 6 inserted or located between the jawl and the opposite jaw of the wrench. The whole is then tightened in place by means of a thumb-screw 8,-as indicated in Fig. 1. With the parts in the position shown the pipe 6 will be prevented from turning in the direction indicated bythe arrow; but by plac ing the portable jaw 1 against the jaw 7 of the wrench 5 the pipe'will be prevented from turning in the opposite direction.
To remove the pipe from the wrench or the wrench from the pipe, the jaws 4; and 7 are again separated by means of the thumb-screw 8 and the portable jaw 1 removed.
It is deemed important that the curved surface of the member 1 be an irregular curve and that the greatest thickness thereof be at a point which shall be between the shank of the wrench and the object to be operated upon at its point of contact with the said member. By this means the member 1 is prevented from slipping out of the wrench unless the shank be broken, and, furthermore, the said member cannot slip along the face of the jaw of the wrench, and the said member is adjustable to accommodate different sizes of pipe to be held.
Having described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
As an improved article of manufacture, a portable insertible wrench-jaw the same comprising a member one face curved and provided with serrations in a portion of its surface only, the opposite face being plane and serrated, the said member having its curved surface formed on an irregular curve with its Agreatest thickness at a point between the shank of the wrench and the point of contact of the object to be operated upon, substantially as and for the purpose specilied.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two witnesses. EMMERSON THOMPSON. THOMAS ARTHUR BROWN. Witnesses:
