Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ETHAN I. DoDDs, of Avalon, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Sill for Metal Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in whichy Figure 1 shows in front elevation an end sill constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a plan view illustrating a modified construction. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the end sill shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a vertical section on the line V V of Fig. l. Fig. 6 is a vertical section on the line VI VI of Fig. 4., and
Fig. 7 is a plan view showing how the members of the end sill are formed.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of the end sills of cars, t0 make them without waste, and to produce from a minimum weight of material an end sill of great strength and rigidity.
In the manufacture of the end sill I make the members `thereof by dividing a flanged beam with a longitudinal bias cut a a extending through the web, as shown in Fig.. 7, thus dividing it into two parts, each having along one edge the original ange belonging to the beam, while the other edge produced by the bias cut is unflanged. The parts thus formed taper longitudinally and are employed in the manufacture of end sills in the manner shown in the drawings.
In Fig. l, 2 2 represent members which ar made by dividing achannel-beam withalongitudinal bias cut in the manner above described, thus leaving at one edge I) of the sections the original flange of the channel-beam, while the other edge a o is untlanged. These members 2 2 are set with the webs in a vertical plane and abut at their ends against the draft-sills 3 3, as shown in Fig. 1, with the flanges b I) being on their lower edges. rIhey constitute the vertical face .of the end sill. The top face of the end sill is'constituted of members 4 4, which are made in like manner by cutting a channel-beam with a longitudinal bias cut and applying the parts so divided so that they will abut against the draft-sill. The parts of the end sill thus constituted are connected at the front and top by plates 5 6, as shown in Figs. l and 2. The flanges of the members 4 4 are applied against the webs of the vertical members 2 2, and the plates 5 and 6 may be made integral and constitute a single piece angular in cross-section, as shown in Fig. 5. In the modified construction shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 6 the end sill is constituted solely by vertical members 2 2, and the upper members 4 4 are replaced by a reinforcing-angle 7 as shown in Fig. 6. Angles 8 8 are preferably applied to the bottom of the end sill, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and the car is provided with the usual end sheets 9 9.
Within the scope of myinvention as defined in tbe claims the parts may be modied in various ways, since What I claim isl. A car-sill comprising symmetrical, tapering members constituted of sections of an integrally-flanged beam divided diagonally through the web only; substantially as described.
2. A car-sill comprising members constituted of sections of flanged beams divided longitudinally through the web with bias cuts and set in a vertical plane at front of the end sill, and similar members set in a horizontal plane to constitute the top of the sill; substantially as described.
3. A car-sill comprising members constituted of symmetrical, tapering sections of an integrally-flanged beam divided by a rectilinear, diagonal cut from end to end of its web; substantially as described.
4. A lcar-sill having tapering members each provided with an integral flange along one edge and being unanged along the other edge; substantially as described.
5. A car-sill comprising a Hanged member set in a vertical plane and a second iianged member in a horizontal plane, a lianged edge on one member fitting against an unlianged edge of the other member; substantially as described.
6. A car-sill having vertically and horizontally arranged flanged members abutted against a draft-sill, and connected by plates; l In testimony whereof I have hereunto set substantially as described. my hand.
