wil me'oooo IINITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BRAKE-SHOE HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 31, 1905.
Application filed March 21, 1905. Serial No. 251,312.
' T (I/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Steele, in
' the county of Chouteau and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake-Shoe Seats or Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to brakes for wagons, and more particularly to means for holding the brake-shoe in its operative position, whereby the shoe proper may be easily removed and replaced from time to time as will be necessary owing to the wear and strain placed thereon; and my invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, the preferred form whereof will be hereinafter clearly set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
The prime object of my invention, among others, is to provide a reliably eflicient appliance of the character specified adapted to removably hold the brake-shoe proper in position, whereby when said brake-shoe or wearing portion has become worn out by frictional engagement with a tire of the wheel such portion may be readily replaced by another block or shoe without necessitating the entire renewal of the brake-block.
A further object of my invention is to provide simple and efficient means which may be very cheaply constructed for producing a perfect form of brake-block and admitting the use of any special wear-resisting face for the block, which face may be quickly replaced by an unworn member.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter made clearly apparent, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are considered a part of this application, and in which- Figure 1 shows my invention applied to use upon a -vehicle of the usual or any preferred construction. Fig. 2 shows a horizontal sectional view of my brake block and shoe, taken on a line to its supporting-shaft.
Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of my brake-block and wearing-shoe proper attached thereto. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view of one of the clamping members employed in holding the shoe proper to the brake-block.
For convenience of description the various parts of my invention and cooperating accessories will be designated by numerals, the same numeral applying to a similar part throughout the several views, and, referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 indicates the carrying-wheels, and 2 the wagon-bed, of a vehicle of ordinary construction, it being understood that my brake-block will be found reliably eflicient for all manner of vehicles.
To the Wagon-bed, as is common, I attach a brake-block-carrying shaft 3, or said shaft may be attached to the running-gears, as is sometimes done. It will be understood that the shaft 3 is connected with the usual handlever, whereby the brakes may be applied to the wheels as desired by rocking the shaft or partially turning it in its bearings, as will be obvious. Upon the extended ends 4 of the shaft 3 I mount my brake-block 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 and other views of the drawings, said brake-block being held in position by the nut 6 or the equivalent thereof.
My improved brake-block is provided upon each side with a pair of transversely-disposed grooves 7 in which I locate the clamping members or'plates 8, each extending across the face of the brake-block and having their inner ends bent toward each other, as shown I tion all such substantial equivalents and substitutes as may be considered as falling fairly within the scope of my invention.
ing the clam ping members Within the grooves and flush with the faces of the block and wearing member.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD WILSON.
Witnesses:
