To all whmn it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID WEAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Darke and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Book and Paper Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention pertains to holders for books, pieces of music, newspapers, and the like; and it contemplates the provision of a simple and neat holder readily attachable to a support and embodying devices adapted to adjust themselves to and hold in a proper manner either one or a plurality of leaves and also adapted to engage the leaves at the side, top, or bottom, as desired.

Various other advantageous features of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of my novel holder in proper position on the music-rest of a piano. Fig. 2 is asimilar View illustrating the leaf-receiving devices of the holder as properly engaging the side edges of the leaves of a book. of the leaf-receiving devices removed. Fig. 4 is a detail section taken in the plane indicated by the line 4 4: of Fig. 1, with the bolt in plan; and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the clips for connecting my novel holder to the music-rest of a piano or other suitable support.

Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, referring to which- A is the music-rest of a piano, which is herein shown merely as a type of support to which my novel holder may be attached.

B is the holder-body, which preferably comprises two parallel rods a, designed to be arranged horizontally and provided at their ends with threads I), and blocks 0, secured on the end portions of the rods a'by nuts d. The blocks 0 serve to hold the rods to at a suitable distance in front of the support A and also serve for the engagement of clips G, the office ofwhich is to connect the holder to the support A. These clips C have end loops 0 to receive the blocks 0 and other end loops f to receive the ends of the'support A, and hence it will be observed that when the nuts d are turned to move the blocks 0 inwardly the clips will be secured under pressure against the Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one ends of the support A, with the result that casual movement of the holder-body on the support will be precluded.

F F are bolts extending through the blocks or bases D and the heads E and having round portions disposed in the former and square portions disposed in'the latter and also having threaded forward ends, and G G are binding-nuts mounted on the said threaded ends of the bolts and disposed in front of the heads E.

H H are leaf-receiving devices carried by the rotatable heads E. The said devices H are identical in construction, and therefore a detailed description of the one shownin Fig. 3 and at the right of Fig. 1 will suflice to im part a definite understanding of both. The said device H, Figs. 1 and 3, is formed of spring metal and comprises a loop 9, having legs it disposed in front of one of the rotary heads E, stretches is, extending from the ends of the legs it and through the said head E, portions Z, extending forwardly from the stretches k, and terminals m, extending from the said portions Z and preferably diverged, as shown. The portions Z are disposed in the loop g, and hence it will be observed that the said loop is free to move toward and from the stretches 7c, so as to permit of the interposition of one leaf or a plurality of leaves between the legs h of the leaf and the terminals 1% and assure said leaf or leaves being yieldingly retained in such position in the proper manner. By reference to Fig. 1 it will be noted that the devices H are adapted to support a book on the rest or support A, as well as receive and hold the leaves of the book, While in Fig. 2 is made clear the fact that the devices H are adapted to receive the side edges of the leaves and in such positions hold the book. The devices H may be adjustably secured in the positions shown and described by simply tightening the nuts G on the bolts F, so as to press the rotatable heads E against the bases or blocks D, and it will also be observed that by virtue of the bases D being adapted to slide on the rods 0 the devices H may be arranged at various distances apart to suit the book or piece of music to be held.

In the practical use of my novel holder the bases D are properly positioned on the holderbody B, and the devices H are arranged as desired relative to the said bases, after which the book or piece of music is placed in engagement with said devices H, either in the manner shown in Fig. 1 or that shown in Fig. 2.

It will be readily gathered from the foregoing that my novel holder, notwithstanding its efficiency and the facility with which it may be attached to amusic-rest or other support, is simple and inexpensive in construction and may therefore be sold with profit for a small price.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. A holder for books and the like, comprising a body, blocks movable on the end portions of the body, clips having loops receiving the blocks and also having other loops for engaging the ends of a support, and adjustable devices retaining the blocks on the end portions of the body.

2. A hold er for books and the like, comprising a body having rods threaded at their ends, blocks movable on the end portions of said rods, nuts mounted on the threaded portions of the rods, at the outer sides of the blocks, and clips having loops receiving the inner portions of the blocks and also having other loops for engaging the ends of a support.

3. A holder for books and the like, comprising a body, blocks movable on the end portions of the body, adjustable devices retaining the blocks on the end portions of the body, and clips for connecting the body to a support; said clips having loops receiving the inner portions of the blocks.

body, a rotatable head carried by the base, means for adjustably fixing the rotatable head on the base, and a leaf-receiving device carried by the rotatable head. v

6. In a holder for books and the like, the combination of a body, a base slidable on the body, a rotatable head carried by the base, means for adjustabl y fixing the rotatable head with respect to the base, and a leaf-receiving device formed of spring material and comprising a movable loop, stretches connecting the movable'loop and the head and extending through the latter, and portions extending from said stretches and loosely through the loop and having diverging terminals disposed in front of the loop.

7. In a holder for books and the like, the combination of a body comprising parallel rods, means on the rods for connecting the body to a support, bases slidable on the rods of the body in the direction of the length thereof, rotatable heads carried by the bases, means for ad justably fixing the rotatable heads with respect to their bases, and leaf-receiving devices formed of spring material and carried by the heads; said devices respectively comprising portions one of which is arranged to spring toward and from the other.

8. A holder for books and the like, comprising a body, blocks movable on the end portions of the body, adjustable devices retaining the blocks on the end portions of the body, and means carried by the blocks for connecting the body to a support.

9. A holder for books and the like, comprisingabody, blocks movable on the end portions of the body, adjustable devices retaining the blocks on the end portions of the body, and clips on the blocks having loops for engaging the ends of a support.
