Patented Oct. 24, 1905.
Application filed October 15, 1904. Serial No. 228,565.
To all whom it may conccrn:
Be it known that we, CHARLns E. SLANE and GO'RDON G: CORBALEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of l/Vashington, have invented new and useful lmprovemeuts in Check-Books, oi' which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bookbinding and to the class ot' devices therein known as temporary binders; and the object oi' the same is to produce an improved check-book.
To this end the invention consists, broadly, in a cover, a detachable pad of stubs, and a detachable pad of checks; and it consists, specifically,in the details oi' construction set forth below.
One manner of carrying out our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein A Figure I is a plan view of this check-book open, the lower portions of the two pads being broken away to displayvthc mechanism beneath. Fig. II is a similar view of the cover with the two pads removed. Fig. llI is an edge view of the stub-pad. Fig. IV is a pderspective detail of the clamp for the checkp i Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a cover comprising two stili' leaves connected by a fiexible back, as usual. Secured, preferably, to the left-hand leaf of this cover by eyelets 2 or other means is a metal strip 3, located near the outer edge of this leaf.
5 is a stub-pad, ruled and printed in any suitable manner, and 6 is the binding thereof which consists of any proper devices which will hold the leaves together and includes a tongue 7 at the back adapted to be slipped removably beneath the metal strip 3 to hold the pad in place. As here shown, the sheets oi' the stub-pad are perforated at 8, so as to be removable, and have holes 9 for binding on the ordinary bill-file, as desired. However, the essential feature of this portion of our invention is that the pad of stubs shall be bodily removable from the cover, so that a new pad can be substituted when the leaves of this one are exhausted.
The check-pad 10 consists of a number of sheets connected along their inner edge 11 in tablet form and perforated, as at 12, so that the :individual checks can be readily removed.
By preference the upper and lower ends of this inner edge or margin 11 are notched, as at 13, for a purpose to appear below.
Referring now more particularly to Fig. IV, wherein is shown the clamp which detachably connects the check pad With the right leai' of the cover, it will be noted that this clamp consists of a base-piece 20, having tangs 21, by which it is Secured to the cover, and movable members 22, having hooks 23 at their outer extremities, which engage the upper and lower ends of the margin 11 of the check-pad. These hooks are preferably guided under inturned lips 24, which are struck up from the base, and they are moved inward and outward by any suitable means, although We pref'cr that shown. The latter consists of a plate 25, pivoted ccntrally on a stud 26 in the base 20,and having spiral slots 27, which engage pins 28 at the iuner ends oi' the two members, and from this plate is sti-uck up a hook 29, adapted to clamp over and engage the back of the margin ll when the plate is turned to draw the members inward. be seen that by proper manipulation of this oscillating member the two movable members are drawn inward and their hooks are engaged With the margin 11 at its top and bottom, while the hook 29 simultaneously engages the back oi' said margin at a point about midway between. This detail we consider quite important because it ali'ords three points of attachment between the clamp and check-pad, and if said pad comprises sheets having three or four checks each, as shown, and hence of considerable size, we consider it of advantage to clamp this pad at the various points mentioned. It' the margin 11 of the check-pad is notched, as shown at 13', a tongue or fin 30 is cut out of each movable member and bent upward within and Secured to its hook 23, as seen in Fig. IV, this fin being of proper size and such location that it enters the notch 13 when the hook is drawn inward by the manipulation of the slotted plate 25. If these fins are employed the connection of the pad with the cover is a positive one rather than one which einbraces a clamping action only,
Thus it Will' IOO and We therefore consider their use advisable,
` and 'paid out from time to time, and each sheet of the stub-pad is filled out in accord ance With the checks as they are paid out. By having these sheets perforated, as at 8, they may be removed as fast as they are filled and passed on to the bookkeeper, and if they have holes, as at 9, they may be filed as ofice practice requires. But the important features of our present invention consist in the fact that when the stub-pad is exhausted it can be replaced by a ,new one as also is the ease With the check-pad, thus preserving the cover and the clamp tor constant use, and hence permitting them to be made of any durable and ornamental form.
What we claim as new is- 1. A check book comprising a cover, a check-pad consisting ot' leaves united at one edge in a binding having notches in its upper and lower edges, and a clamp carried by the cover and having hooks adapted to engage over the check-pad and fins to then removably enter the notches in theupper and lower edges, and also having a third hook adapted to pass over the back of said binding of the check-pad.
2. A temporary binder consisting of a cover, a pad, a clamp comprising a base-piece Secured to the cover, members movable thereover and having hooks at their outer edges adapted to engage the pad, and an Operating member for approximating the hook members, said Operating member itself having a hook adapted also to engage the pad.
3. A temporary binder conssting of a cover, a pad, a clamp comprising a base-piece, tangs struck therefrom by which it is attached to the cover,'lips struck therefrom and forming guides, members moving under the guides and having hooks at their outer ends adapted to engage said pad, and means for drawing these members inward,
4. A temporary binder consisting of a cover, a pad, a clamp comprising abase-piece, tangs struck therefrom by which it s attached to the cover, lips struek therefrom and forming guides, members moving under the guides and having hooks at their outer ends adapted to engage said h pp xp 'the latter inward, and a hook on this member adapted to also engage the pad.
5. A temporary binder consisting of a cover, a pad, a clamp comprising a base-piece, tangs struek therefrom by which it is attached to the cover, lips struek therefrom and forming guides, members moving under the guides and having hooks at their outer ends adapted to engage said pad, a stud in the base-piece between the hook members, and a plate pivoted thereon and having spiral slots, and pins in said members engaging said slots for the purpose set forth.
6. A temporary binder consisting of a cover, a pad, a clamp comprisingabase-pieee, tangs struck therefrom by which it is attached to the cover, lips struck there'rom and forming guides, members moving under the guides and having hooks at their outer ends adapted to engage said pad, a stud in the base-piece between the hook members, a plate pivoted thereon and having spiral slots, pins in said members engaging said slots, and a hook integral with this plate and adapted to engage the back of the pad when the plate is turned to draw the hook members inward, for the purpose set forth.
7. A temporary binder consisting of a support, a pad having notches at the upper and ower portions of its binding, a clamp Secured upon said support and embracing movable members, each having a hook at its outer end adapted to engage said binding, and a fin within each hook adapted to enter the notch in the binding when the hook is drawn into position.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signanatures in presence of two subscrbing witnesses.
