T0 ALI. WHOM IT MAY CONCERN# v Be it k'nown that I, JOHN C. SMITH, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer, and in the YState of New York, have invented certain new andvuseful Improvements in Rock-Drilling Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompunyi'nyg,` drawings and to the letters of 'reference marked thereon.
Y The nature oiemy invention consists in the general arrangement of -an -adjustable self-feeding machine for drilling maks. l In order to enable others skilled inthe art toma-ke and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction'vand operation, referring to the annexed drawings, Awhich form a'part of this specification, and

The said frame B is pivoted to ears, ou the rear corners of these standards, by means of screws e c, passing through 4said ears and through the lower rear corners of `the frame.

The crank-shaft c works in between the jaws J and J above it, and the jaw K below it, saidjaws'being joined at their rear ends to a head-piece, L, which moves up and down onan upright stationary rod, M, placed 4in the centre of the rear side of the bottom of theframe B, for the purpose of guiding said head-pieeeand jaws in their movement up and down, when moved by the crank-shaft.
The lowerjaw, K, which is slotted to allow the drill-shaft to pass through it, is .hinged or pivoted `at-its rear end to the lowerside of the head-piece L, and is held-'up close to the crank-shaft' .by meansV of a bar,- d,
which bar is fastened to it, and passes up between the upper` jaws J, and J', being above the same, Vseeuredtore. spring-plate, e, which is fastened to the upper` side of `the'head-piece, and ,which can b'e regulatedpat willby means of a screw, g, passing up from beneath said head-piece, and striking fthe lower side of the spring.

This lug. may be placedin a vertical groove, p, on the upper part 'of the drill-shaft, sothat When'the machine4 is in operation, and the collarrO is turning, by inse'rtingthis lug into saidgroove, the drill-shaft obtains a rotary motion, as well 'as an `lip-and-down motion, and by means of the screivon the saine, whichts into the nut f, already"described, on the upper jaws, it becomes' self-feeding, and gradually sinks-lower into the rock. Having thus' fully described invention, what I-claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent", is- 1.v Thejaws'J, J', and K, constructed as described, andjoined .to the head-piece L, in combination with the crank-'shaft c and stationary rod M, for the purpose of giving an up-and-down motion to the drill-shaft N, subl stantiallyas and for the purposes herein set torth.
2. 'Ihe `wheel-R, constructedas described, with lugs 'm m, Vworking in the screw;threads on th'e shaft and connected by means `of rods k k with the anged. collar O, in combination with the lever hand lug o, on said bollar, and the groove p, on the drill-shaft N, for the purpose of givingv said drill-shaft afrotary motion, subv stantially as undfor the purposes herein set forth.
