WATER-TU BE BOILER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1905.
I Application filed July 3, 1905. Serial No. 268,039.
To aZZ whom, it may concern;
Be it known that LCLARENOE HILL SM1TH,of Falmouth, in the county of Barnstable and State of Massachusetts. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Tube Boilers; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in high-pressure water-tube boilers.
One object of the invention is to so construct a water-tube boiler that two paths may be-afforded for the circulation of water.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a large supply of water to the series of tubes adapted to receive the most direct heat of the furnace.
Another object of the invention is to so construct a water-tube boiler that the cleaning of the tubes is facilitated.
Another object of the invention is to reduce the cost of manufacture of boilers of this nature.
The invention consists in such peculiar features of construction and combination of parts whereby the stated objects of the invention and such other objects as may be apparent from the following description are carried into effect, as will hereinafter be more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
The drawing represents a sectional view of a water-tube boiler, illustrating the new invention.
As shown in the drawing, the boiler has the usual front wall 5 and the bridge-wall 6, between which is located the grate 7. From the upper part of the bridge-wall 6 extends the baffle-plate 8, having the forwardly-inclined member 9, adapted to direct the products of combustion forward. The rear wall 10 is furnished with the outlet 11, preferably provided with a damper 12 of any usual construction, the boiler being covered in by the usual top 13, of any well-known heat-resisting material.
The cross-drums 14 and 15 at the upper part of the boiler are connected by the series of tubes 16 16 and 17 17, the ends of which tubes are secured in said drums in any suitable manner. From the drum 15 depends a series of tubes, as 18, which connect at their lower ends with the cross-header 19, connected in turn by a series of short tubes, as 20, with the lower cross-drum 21. The cross-header 19 is furnished with the caps 22 22 for closing clean-out openings usual in said headers, and this header is connected by the inclined series of tubes 23 23 with the front upper drum 14. From the lower drum 21 extends the inclined series of tubes 24 24, which extend directly above the iire-box or furnace, the front ends of these tubes 24 being secured in the crossheader 25, having the caps 26 26 and connected with the drum 14 by tubes, as 27. The drum 14 may be supplied with a water-gage 28 of any well-known construction. Extending across the tubes 23 24 in avertical direction is the deflector-plate 29, from which the inclined baflie 30 extends to the drum 15.
The products of combustion from the firebox first act directly on the series of tubes 24 forward of the baffle-plate 8 and then rise through the corresponding portions of the tubes 23 to the inclined deflecting member 9 of said baflie 8 and are then deflected by said member toward the drum 14. Then passing upward these furnace-gases circulate around the tubes 16 and 17 and seek an outlet at the rear of the boiler-casing, being intercepted in such passage by the baffle 30 and deflector 29. Said furnace-gases circulate downward below the lower edge of the deflector 29 and then upward to the outlet 12, acting on the tubes 23 and 24 in such circulation to raise the temperature of said tubes and of the water therein. As the tubes 24 are subjected to the most direct action of the heat from the firebox, it is desirable that these tubes be supplied with a large quantity of water, this being provided from the large drum .21 and raised in temperature as it passes through these tubes 24 before it reaches those portions of such tubes extending above the firebox. WVhen the temperature of the water in the tubes 24 is raised sufliciently, the circulation of the water is through such tubes to the header 25 and drum 14 and thence through the tubes 23 to the drum 21. As the temperature of the water is raised to a higher degree the water will circulate through both series of tubes 23 and 24, through the header 25 and drum 14, and thence by the tubes 17 to the drum 15. The water may also circulate through the tubes 16, the circulation being unrestricted and rapid, one half the circulation being discharged directly into the drums 14 and 21, while the other half, more or less, is discharged into said respective drums through the headers 25 and 19 and tubes 27 20, whereby congestion of steam and water in the headers is prevented.
The reduction in the number of headers is desirable from the point of economy as well as that of facilitating the cleaning of the tubes. All the tubes may be cleaned from both ends at once, the drums 14:, 15, and 21 being sufliciently large to admit an operative, while the ends of the tubes 23 and 24, secured in the headers, may be cleaned by removing the caps 22'and 26, as is usual in such constructions.
It is not my intention to limit myself to the specific construction herein shown and described, as I am aware that modifications may be made in the structure without departing from the spirit of my invention.
. Havingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A water-tube boiler comprising upper front and rear drums, tubes connecting the same, a rear lower drum, a header connected therewith, a connection between said header and the upper rear drum, a series of tubes connected in the front drum and in said header, a second header located below the front drum and connected therewith, and a series of tubes connected in said header and in said lower drum, as and for the purpose described. I
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLARENCE HILL SMITH.
