CORPORATION.
LATCH FOR TEMPORARY BINDERS.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1905.
Application filed January 14:, 1905. Serial No. 241,056.
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMORY A. TRUssELL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latches for Temporary Binders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a latch for uniting the hinged sections of a temporary binderback, whereby the back sections may be swung apart on their connecting-hinges to separate the sheet-receiving arches carried by said sections and to provide for the retention of the back-sections when moved together to hold the sheets confined on the prongs.
Figure I is a perspective view of the central portion of my binder with thev back-seetions shown swung apart. Fig. II is an enlarged face view of the central portion of the binder at one end with the back-sections held closed by4 my latch. Fig. III is a cross-section taken on line III III, Fig. II. Fig. IV is a longitudinal section taken on line IV IV, Fig. II.
l designates parts of the covers of my binder, and 2 designates the sections of 'the binder-back which are united by a hinge, preferably produced as an integral part or parts of the binder-back.
I designates prong-carrying plates secured to the back-sections. 2 and 5 are prongs projecting from these plates.
No invention per se is herein claimed for the parts just described. i
6 designates a catch-plate fixed to one of the back-sections 2 and provided with atongue 7 projecting therefrom in the direction of the other back-section, the said tongue having an inturned lip 8. 9 is a latch-plate secured to the second back-section and having an upturned apertured keeper 10 projecting therefrom at its forward end and provided near its rear end with a stud 1l, projecting upwardly therefrom, both of the members 10 and 11 being struck from the latch-plate and integral therewith. In the latch-plate 9 and eX- tending longitudinally thereof is a slot 9, that is in alinement with the keeper 10 and stud Il.
12 is a catch-arm that is seated in the keeper 10 and has its forward end projecting through said keeper to furnish a finger-receiving portion 13. The rear end of this catch-arm is notched to receive the stud l1, which lits thereinto and serves to hold the catch-arm from rearward and outward movement, the said stud being bent forwardly over the arm to prevent the outward movement.
14 is a spring secured to the catch-arm l2 at its rear side and'extending forwardly from its point of attachment to the arm. This spring occupiesa position in the latch-plate slot 9 and its forward end extends into bearing with the latch-plate at the front end of said slot, thereby preventing forward movement of the latch-arm, to which it is attached.
It will be seen in the practical use of my latch that when the binder back-sections are brought together the tongue 7 of the catchplate 6 will pass over the latch-arm 12, carried by the latch-plate 9, and the lip of the catch-plate tongue will engage the latch-arm to prevent separation of the catch-plate and latch-plate, this result being due to the catcharm being held in a projected position by the spring 14: beneath it. When it is desired to separate the catch-plate tongue from the latcharm, it is only necessary to depress thelforward end of said latch-arm by pressure upon the finger portion 13 in order that said tongue may be separated from the arm.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination with the hinged backsections of a binder, of a latch-plate carried by one of said sections, a catch-arm having one of its ends rockingly fitted to said plate, a spring having one of its ends secured to said catch-arm and lits other end resting beneath said catch-arm, and a catch-arm carried by the other back-section and having a tongue arranged for engagement with said first-named catch-arm when the back-sections are brought together, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with the hinged backsections of abinder, of a-latch-plate carried by one of said sections, a catch-arm having its inner end rockingly held to said plate, aspring secured to said catch-arm adjacent to the point of its connection with said plate; the said spring having a free end resting beneath said catch -arm and bearing at its termination against the plate to prevent its forward movement, and a catch-arm carried by the other IOC back-section and having a tongue arranged to engage said first-named catch-arm when the back-section/s are moved toward each other, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination With the hinged backsections of a binder, of a latch-plate carried by one of said Sections and provided with a stud, a catch-arm having a notch in its inner end and loosely fitted to said stud, a spring secured to said catch-arm at its lower side adjacent to said stud; the said spring having its free end arranged to rest' beneath the catcharm and bearing at its termination against said latch-plate to prevent disconnection of the plate from said stud, and a catch-arm carried by the other back-Section and havinga tongue arranged to engage said first-named catch-arm when the back-sections are Imoved toward each other. substantially as set forth.
4. The combination With the hinged backsections of a binder, of a latch-plate carried by one of said sections, a catch-arm rockingly fitted to said latch-plate at its inner end, a spring having one of its ends secured to said catch-arm and its other end resting against said back-section, and a catch-arm extending longitudinally of the other back-section and having a tongue extending transversely thereto provided with an inturned lip adapted to engage said first-named catch-arm When the back-sections are moved toward each other. substantially as Set forth.
5. The combinationwith a binder-back consisting of sections hinged together; of a slotted latch-plate secured to one of said sections and provided with an outturned apertured keeper and a stud, a catch-arm secured at one end by said stud and having its other end projecting through said keeper. aspring secured to said catch-arm and extending forwardly in the slot in said latch-plate, and a catch-plate secured to the other back-section and having a tongue arranged for engagement with said catch-arm when said latch -plate and catch plate are moved together, substantially as set forth.
