IVILLIAM P. OBRIEN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF TVVO-THIRDS TO FRANCIS TRIOKEY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVLLLIAu P. OBRIEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Vvayne, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in renches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the fig-- ures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to wrenches, and more particularly to pipe-wrenches; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out particularly in the claims.
The object of the invention is to produce a wrench of the character described wherein the arrangement is such as to enable a wrench of the ordinary spanner type to be converted into a pipe-wrench adapted to turn a pipe in either direction as desired, the wrench being readily applicable to the pipe and easily removed therefrom.
The above object is attained by the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wrench embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the wrench head, showing by dotted lines the movement of the wedge-shaped dog between the opposed jaws of the wrench. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective View of said dog detached from the wrench. Fig. 4: is a side elevation of the wrench-head with the dog removed. Fig. 5 is a transverse section on line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the characters of reference, 1 designates the head of the wrench, having the usual fixed jaws 2 and 3. Pivoted to the transverse web 4, extending between said jaws, is the wedge-shaped dog 5, having its opposed faces provided with teeth or serrations 6, which slant inwardly. The inner end of said dog is slotted, as at 7, to receive the web I between the jaws of the wrench and is provided with a transverse aperture 8, adapted to receive the pin 9, which passes through said dog and through the slot 10 in the web 4, whereby said dog becomes pivoted in the opening between the jaws of the wrench Specification oi Letters Patent.
' Application filed September 15, 1904. Serial No. 224,528.

and is permitted to slide transversely therebetween.
By permitting the dog to slide transversely between the jaws the side of the dog opposite to that which is engaged is allowed to have a full bearing upon the contiguous jaw, thereby removing all strain from the pivotpin 9 and at the same time by said lateral movement affording an opening for the pipe between the fixed jaw and the face of the dog, which is not unduly acute and which permits the wrench to obtain a firmer grip upon the pipe.
By providing the opposite faces of the dog with inwardly inclined. teeth provision is made for turning the pipe in either direction. When the pipe is placed above the dog, as shown by solid lines in Fig. 2, a movement of the handle 11 of the wrench will turn the pipe 12 in the direction indicated by the arrow in solid lines. To turn the pipe in the opposite direction, the wrench is removed and replaced upon the pipe with the dog above it, as shown by dotted lines in said view, when a movement of the Wrench-handle will cause the pipe to be rotated in the direction indicated by the dotted arrow.
It will be noted as the dog shifts from side to side in the wrench-opening its unemployed face comes into a full bearing with the face of the jaw, thereby rendering the wrench secure and firm when placed in operation.
Should the teeth or serrations upon the pivoted dog become dulled, said dog can be removed by withdrawing the pin 9 and the teeth sharpened, and when said dog shall have become so worn as to render it useless it may be replaced by a new dog, thereby rendering the wrench practically as good as new with but very little expense.
It will be noted thatthe dog is slightly longer than the jaws 2 and 3 and that its outer end 13 projects slightly beyond the outer ends of said jaws. The purpose of this is to enable the dog to be readily raised when it is desired to insert a pipe thereunder by simply dropping the head of the wrench onto the pipe and allowing it to slide therefrom until the end of the dog engages the top of the pipe, when said dog will swing upwardly, thereby permitting the pipe to readily enter the space between the lower face of the dog and the upper face of the lower jaw, obviating the necessity of raising the dog by the fingers when it is desired to insert a pipe thereunder.
Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a wrench. the combination with the opposed jaws, of a dog pivotally mounted between said jaws, said dog having gripping teeth upon the opposite faces thereof.
2. In a wrench, the combination with the opposed jaws. of a wedge-shaped dog pivoted between said jaws, said dog having teeth or serrations upon the opposite faces thereof.
3. In a wrench, the combination with the opposed jaws. of a wedge-shaped dog mounted on a movable pivot between said jaws to slide into engagement and lie in contact therewith, the opposite faces of said dog being provided with teeth or serrations.
4. In a wrench, the combination with the opposed jaws, of the wedge-shaped dog, having serrations upon its opposite faces, mounted to swing from side to side between said aws and movable transversely to enable the opposite faces of said dog to be brought into operative relation with the opposed jaws of the wrench. I
5. In a wrench, the combination with the opposed jaws, of a transverse Web between said jaws having a slot therein, a wedge-shaped dog having serrations upon its opposite faces and provided with a transverse slot in one end adapted to receive said web, and a pin passing through the head of the dog and through the slot in said web.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
