UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SCOT-COLLECTOR AND SMOKE-PURIFIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1905.
Application filed July 24, 1908. Serial No. 166,866.
To a whom it may concern;
Be it known that 1, AUGUST ZACHARIAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Odessa, in the county of Bigstone and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soot-Collectors and Smoke-Purifiers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved device for purifying smoke by precipitating soot therefrom; and to this end it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described, and defined in the claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the single view.
The single figure is a perspective view with some arts broken away, illustrating my soot-col ector applied to the smoke-pipe of a heating-stove.
The numeral 7 indicates a heating-stove of the ordinary form, and the numeral 8 indicates the smokepipe thereof. The horizontal and vertical sections of the smokepipe 8 open, respectively, into and from the vertically disposed and preferably cylindrical drum 9, having at its bottom a hopper 10, which delivers into a cleaning-tube 11, the open end of which is normally closed by a cap 12. The drum 9 is also provided with several diametricallyextended circulating-fiues 13, which assist in heating the surrounding air and into which certain articles may be inserted for the purpose of warming them.
With this construction the smoke and hot gases upon entering into the drum 9 suddenly expand, so that all particles, such as soot, are released, as it were, from the blast and are dropped first into a hopper-like bottom 10 and hence into the collecting-tube 11, in the latter of which it may be removed from time to time, as may be required. As there is no upper draft through the depending hopper-like portion or bottom of the chamber or drum 10, the precipitation of the soot is rendered an easy matter. Furthermore, in view of the relatively large diameter of the drum 9 with respect to the smokepipe 8 the draft through the said drum Will be very slight, so that there is but little tendency for the draft to carry off the soot, and a slight tendency will be more than overcome by the action of gravity.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows: 1
The combination With a furnace or stove, and a draft-flue 8 leading therefrom, of a drum-like expansion-chamber 9 interposed in said flue and depending below the same, diametrically-extended air-fines 13 extending the one over the other and opening at their ends to the atmosphere, and the adj acent flues extending at an angle to each other, a hopper like bottom 10 located in said chamber 9 below said flues 13 and below the inlet-section of said flue 8, and cleaning-tube 11 receiving from said hopper-like bottom and provided at its open end with a removable cap 12', substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
, AUGUST ZACHARIAS.
