LUCIUS M. LULL AND PHILANDER G.- BOWEN, 0F ALTOONA, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 80,193, dated July 21, 1858.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
IO ALL WHQM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, Lucius M. LULL and PHILANDER C. BOWEN, ot Altoona, in the county ot Knox, and in the State of Illinois, have' invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wa shingl\Iachincs; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to tbe accompanying drawings, and to the letters of'reference marked thereon.
Iri the annexed drawings forming part of this specification-- Figure 1 represents a front view ot' our invention, and
Figure 2 a. side sectional view of the same.
The nature ot' our invention consists inthe combination of a frame with concave bottom, and provided with rollers, which frame is bung on spiral springs and n. grooved cylinder.
To enable others skilled in the art to makeand use our invention, We willl proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represent-s a wooden frame of suitable dimensions, in the bottom of which is a bolt, B, to be fastened to a block, C. The ends ofthe block C are fastened by screws to the bottom of the tub or boxin which the machine is to .be used. D is a cylinder hung;r on an arbor which has its bearings in the sides ofthe frame A, and turned by means of a crank. This cylinder D is grooved horizontally, as shown in tig. 1, except on its ends, where itis smooth to allow it to tit into the frame E, which is made of wood, or other suitable material, and has a concave bottom, F, made of zinc or other metal to hold water. The sides of the frame E are also protected with zincor other metal, which extends up between the cylinder D and frame A, to prevent the water in the bottom, F, from running out on the sides. In the sides ofthe frame E, and close to the concave bottom F, are horizontal rollers G G, to act in connection With the cylinder D, whenthe machine'is in use. The frame E is hung by arms II II extending through slots in the sides of frame A to spiral springs I I, which are fastened to frame A by screws or pins AJ J, and the lower ends attached to arms H. The springs I I are protected and held in their places by means of round blocks K K inside of the springs, the lower end resting on the arms H H, and the upper end under the screw or pin J.
Having,` thus fully described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of the open frame A, provided with the screw-bolt B, to which is connected the block C, with the frame E, concave bottom F, rollers G G, arms II H which are provided with pins K K, and spiral springs I I, the whole being used with the-cylinder D, as and for lthe purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing, we have hereunto set our hands, this 6th day of April, 1868.
LUCIUS M. LULL, PHILANDER C.v BOWEN.
