[CHARLES W. (YEAH-DON, or PORTLAND, MAINE.
Letters Patent No. 80,133, dated Jilly 21, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
TO ALL WHOM 11 MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. CAHOON, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland, and State of Maine, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Lamps; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others to make and use my invention, rcfcrencebeing being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which i Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lamp-burner and a section ofthe chimney. q
Figure 2, another view of thesame, with the chimney and deflector turned oil from the burner.
Letters Patent of the United States have been granted upon lamp-burners, inwhich the chimney is held to the deflect-or by the said deflector fitting within thesame, and pressing outwardly against the interior of the chimney. v r v My invention relates to an improvement in such burners or lamps, for the purpose'of more securely holding or fastening the chimney in its position in relation to the burner.
' In the accompanying drawingsb shows a deflector; d, the wiclc-tnbe;f is a perforated plate to admit a current of air to the flame; h is the chimney, passing down and around the deflector b eshows the rest for the base of said chimney.
My improvement consists in constructing the chimney thus designated with an interior shoulder, as at y, or at that point on and aroundthe interior of the chimney where the deflector meets and impinges upon the same. i .This shoulder is'intended for the reception 'oi'the outer edge or periphery of the said deflector. It will be seen, from the drawings, that the'chimney is made of that form in which the wallsof the same-are straight, nearly so, to a distance, at least, somewhat above and'below the point of contact between the outer periphery of the deflector and the interior of the chimney.- Thus, the outer edge of the deflector fitting into the shoulder, constructed'as described, serves securelyto hold the chimney in its position around the deflector, the wick-tube, and the flame of the lamp when lighted. 1 v i It is'apparent that a lamp-chimney of this description, constructed with a shoulder, as described, may be fastened to the'hurner by pressing the said .chimney down over the deflector, until thesaid dellector meets the i said shoulder. i
As'illustrnted in fig. 2 of the drawings, a joint, '11,, unites the chimney-rest e with the perforatedpiece of metal f, whereby, when the chimney is secured ins described, the chimney, deflector, and rest e can be turned off from over the wick-tube, as shown, Without liability of the chimney to be shaken or to fall from its position around the deflectorand onthe rest a.
Letters Patent of'the United States have been granted to ine'for a joint in itsconnection with a lamp, as therein shown, and Ijtherefore do'not claim such device or combination.
i The operation of placing the chimney in its position around the deflector is simply to press the chimney downwardly until the base oil th'e chimney reaches its rest, e, and the deflector has entered the interior shoulder of the chimney.
When the chimney is to be removed from over the wick-tubeand flame of the lamp, the chimney, deflector, and reste are turned-off, as illustrated in fig/Z, by means of thejoint. I
I have described the part 1 as a shoulder, although it is represented in the drawing as a curvilinear pro jecti'on on the outside of the chimney, and a curvilinear recess on the inside thereof. But it will be apparent that only the-lower half or portion of the curvilinear party serves, in fact, to aid in retaining the chimney in its position when thrown back, as-in fig. 2. I
When the chimney is erect, as in fig. 1, the chimney rests upon its base at e, and does not rest by the upper portion of the curvilinear part3 pressing upon the upper side of the deflector. The same purpose would be subserved, were the upper part of the curvilinear part y left out, because the combination of the edge of the deflector with the lower portion of the curvilinear part 3/ is what prevents the chimney from dropping when thrown back, The lower half or shoulder is the operating part, the entire recess or groove being made merely as a convenient method of construction.-
What I claim as my invention, and desire-to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combinution with a lamp-burner, to which the chimney is held by interior chimney-fastenings, a chimrieyhaviug an interior shoulder, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. In combination with a lump-burner, to which the chimney is secured by meansof an interior shoulder, the horizontaljoint 'n, as and for the purposes described.
3. A lamp-chimney, as described, with an interior shoulder in the same, fox-the purpose of fastening it to the burner, substantially asset forth. V 4
