SAMUEL K. DENNIS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Oct. 3, 1905.
Application filed August 6, 1905. Serial No. 272,872.
To (1] Z whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL K. DnNNIs,a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Truck Attachments for Seeders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to seeders, and particularly to a truck attachment for machines of that class whereby the machine may be so mounted that it will readily pass through a narrow opening or may be drawn through narrow lanes or roads when being transported to or from a field; and it consists in providing a truck-axle secured in a transverse position intermediate the ends of the seed-hopper and adapted to receive the regular ground-wheels of the machine; also,in providingmeans whereby the tongue may be transferred from the front of the machine to one of the regular axes of the wheels.
The invention further consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a partial plan view of a seeder, hopper, and truck attachment embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line A B of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail of the tongue-socket. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the truck-axle and supporting-bracket on line C D of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a part of the machine, showing the manner of attaching the truck and pole for transportation purposes; and Fig. 6 is a sectional detail of a part of the tongueattaching means.
Similar reference characters denote similar parts throughout the several views.
1 represents the seed-hopper, mounted upon the longitudinally-arranged frame members 2 and 3 and provided with the usual stub-axles at each end thereof adapted to have the groundwheels journaled thereon, one of which axles being shown by dotted lines in Fig. 5. A bracket-piece 4c is secured to the frame members 2 and 3 at the center portion thereof and to the bottom of the hopper and is provided with a forwardly-projecting tubular portion 5, adapted to enter the rear end of a socket-piece 6, secured to the rear end of a tongue-piece'7, the socket-piece being secured to the bracket by means of a pin 8 passing through openings in the two members.
The tongue may be of the usual length where two draft-animals are used and suitably supported laterally by braces extending to the associated frame members in any approved form, or a thill attachment may be used, as represented in the drawings, the only essential being to provide a ready means for attachment and detachment of the parts.
9 is a truck-axle having the journal portions 10 and 11,adapted to receive the ground-wheels of the seeder in the same manner as the stubaxles at the ends of the hopper and which are secured thereon by the usual keys passing through openings in the outer ends of the journals. The axle is provided with a downwardly-bent portion 12, disposed in a horizontal plane and embraced by the depending sides 13 and 14 of a depending bracket 15, secured to the frame members '2 and 3 by means of the upstanding ears 16 and 17, in which position it is secured by means of the bolt 18.
The socket-piece 6 is provided with a transverse opening 19 near its outer, end that registers with a corresponding opening 20 through the tubular portion 5 in a manner to receive the securing means when in position for the regular operation of the machine, and when the tongue attachment is transposed to its position on one of the stub-axles of the seeder there is an additional opening 21, vertically disposed therethrough, that will register with the opening at the other end of the axle-journal in a manner to receive the securing-pin, as shown in Fig. 5.
WV hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a truck attachment for seeders, the combination of a hopper frame members upon which said hopper is mounted, ground-wheels, journals for said ground -wheels longitudinally disposed relative to the hopper, a truckaxle mounted in a transverse position relative to the hopper and intermediate its ends, said truck-axle having a downwardly-bent middle portion secured to said frame members and journal portions at opposite ends thereof and above the plane of said bent portion adapted to receive said ground-wheels.
