TROUSERS-STRETCHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 26, 1905.
Application filed May 12, 1905. Serial No. 260,151.
10 all whom-it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM JOHN WARD- WELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Redondo, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Trousers-Stretcher, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to trousers-stretchers; and its object is to provide a simple device which may be easily applied to a pair of trousers in order to crease them at the lower extremities and enable them to be suspended, as from a hook.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and definitely set forth in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective showing the device as applied to a pair of trousers. As will appear, only the lower extremities of the trousers are represented. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device, the arms of the same be ing indicated in dotted outlines in open position, which they assume when the device is not applied to the trousers; and Fig. 3 is a section taken substantially upon the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the parts, 1 represents the device applied to the trousers 2, as indicated. The device is preferably formed substantially of wire, said wire being wound so as to form a resilient coil 3, from which extensions 4 pass downwardly. These extensions are bent laterally, as indicated, so as to form substantially horizontal arms 5. These arms are themselves bent at their-extremities, so as to form downwardly-projecting fingers 6. The arms 5 are bifurcated, as shown, so as to present branches 5 5 the branches 5 being attached to the branches 5 by means of metal sleeves 7, which are firmly wrapped thereabout near the inner extremities of the arms 5, as shown. The fingers 6 project downwardly, as suggested, and Lpon them are rigidly attached sleeves 8,
of the arms and the other branch constitutes the left branch of the opposite arm. The device is applied to a pair of trousers in the manner indicated in Fig. 1, in which the lower extremities of the trousers held in a vertical position receive the fingers 6 in the usual manner. When applied in this way, the branch 5 of one arm is received in one of the trousers-legs, while the branch 5 of the oppositearm is received in the opposite leg. This arrangement operates beneficially to equalize the pressure on the two legs.
When the device is not applied to the trousers, as indicated, the arms 5 dispose themselves in substantially the positions in which they are indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. In order to apply the device, the extensions 4 are pressed together, so as to bring the arms down into the relation in which they are shown in full lines. The fingers 6 are then thrust downwardly into the trousers ends, as shown.
As indicated most clearly in Fig. 3, the combs 9 consist of thin sheet-metal blades, and for this reason they have an exaggerated tendency to crease the trousers at the point where they apply their pressure. This tendency is augmented by the serrations 10 in the combs, and these serrations at the same time operate to prevent the trousers from falling off when they are hung upon a hook, as they may be by means of the coil 3, the opening of which constitutes an ey ,e f j.'3 for this purpose.
The device is evidently of very simple construction and admirably effects the purposes of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A trousers-stretcher formed of Wire bent to form a coil with extensions projecting In testimony whereof I have signed my ing bifurcated arms disposed substantially 1 name to this specification in the presence of 10 atgight angles therein, saidlarins geiing bent two subscribing Witnesses.
su stentially at rig 13 2mg es an orining (T downwardly-projecting fingers adapted to WILLIAM JOHN ARDVVELL' engage the trousers, said fingers having rigid i Witnesses sleeves presenting serrated edges adapted to C. P. HOVEY,
downward therefrom, said extensions havengage the trousers. i C. M. BALDWIN.
