Be it known that I, THOMAS HENRY IiANoE- LOT DIXON, a subject of the King of the United Kingdom'of Great Britain and Ireland, resid-- ing at Manor Park, in the county of Essex, England, have invented an Improved Separator for Paper and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved separator for paper and the like, and has for its object to .enable single sheets of paper to be separated froma quantity thereof contained in a hopper or other receptacle without the liability of more than one sheet being separated at one and the same time or getting beyond control when such sheet is to be employed in further operations, thereby enabling the future progress thereof, such as when fed into a printing, bronzing, folding, or other machine with which single sheets of paper or other material are employed, to be regulated as desired.
To enable this invention to be clearly understood, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved separator. Fig. 2 is a plan of Fig.1. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, partly in section, of Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate the action of a part of the mechanism comprised in the improved separator. Figs. 6 and 7 are side ele- I vation and plan, respectively, of a'detail to a larger scale. Fig. 8 is a detail hereinafter described, and Fig. 9 illustrates the improved separator attached to a machine and means foroperating the same. Figs. 10, 11, and 12 illustrate modified forms of a revolving disk.
To a girder 1 is attached an upright hearing or bracket 2 for aspindle 3, on the lower end of which is fixed a disk or plate 4. Such disk or plate4has two slots 0r recesses 5, made therein preferably diametrically opposite and is fixed a cam 12, that operates a pin 13, at:
tached to one end of an oscillated horizontal arm 14, mounted on an adjustable pin 15 to the girder 1, while the opposite end of said arm 14 is provided with a slot 16 for engaging with the upper end of an adjustable rocking vertical arm 17, carried on a pin 18, fixed in a slid-v ing bracket to the girder 1, the adjustment being obtained by removing a screw 19, that enables the said arm 17 to be moved closer to or farther from the girder 1 and thenre- The needle-holder 21, Figs. 6 and 7, is fitted with needles 23, arranged at the front edge in holes formed therein or in conjunction with a cap or cover 24, .while the distance they project can be adjusted by means of screws 25, mounted in and operated from the under surface of said holder, the rear portion of which consists of an arm 26, to which is attached a plate 27, capable of radial adjustment thereon by means of a pin 28 and a slot 29, being fixed in any position by screw 30. At the lower edge of the plate 27 is formed a curved edge or slot 31, which travels on a roller 32, mounted on a. pin 33, that is carried in a bracket 34, fixed to a sliding bracket 35 on the girder 1.
A hopper or receptacle for holding the paper or other material consists of sides 36-and upright plates 37, attached to the girder 1, the former also being provided, if required, with upright plates 38 and hanging bearings 39 for carrying spindles or rods 40, on which may be mounted sleeves orrollers 41. The bearings 39 may be made adjustable, as shown in Fig. 8, by means of a nut 42. A further support for the paper or the like and a cross connec-- tion between the sides 36 consists of a board 43. Any suitable means for supporting the paper may, however, be used. 'To keep the paper or other material free from dust and to enable the loopingarrangement to be efiective to the last sheet, a cover is provided, preferably of the same size as the paper.
On the end of the spindle 10 is mounted a chain-wheel 44, to illustrate a means for operating the said separator from any suitable part of a machine to which it may be fixed or movably attached, such as a printirig-machine, as shown in Fig. 9, in which such wheel 44 is driven from a similar wheel on the end of the shaft of the cylinder 45 by a chain 46.
Although the plate or disk 4 has been de scribed as having two slots 5 form ed diametrically opposite therein, such may have only one slot or more, as desired, while the slot or slots may be straight, as shown in Fig. 2, or curved, as in Fig. 10, and, if desired, be more or less tangential instead of radial, as illustrated by Figs. 11 and 12. It is not essential that the outer ends or edges 6 and 7 of the slots 4 should be made as shown, as the curved edge 6 may consist of an inclined edge or otherwise, while the inclined edge 7 may be curved.
The needle-holder 27 may be arranged to receive and hold one or any number of needles 23, with means for regulating the extent of the projection of same, as herein described.
The action of this invention is as follows: A quantity of paper 47 is placed in a hopper and supported therein by the board or crosspiece 43, with or without rollers 41 and plate or disk 4. If the needle-holder 21 be in the full rear position, it is gradually moved forward by means of cam 12, operating on arms 14 and 17, and upward by slot 31, traveling on roller 32, till the needle-points 23 enter, at or near the edge and at an angle, the surface of the lowest sheet of paper and commence the initial stage of forming a loop, as shown in Fig. 3. At the same time as the commencement of the forward motion of the needle-holder 21 the disk 4 has been rotating in the direction of the arrow a, so as to bring the commencement of the mouth of one of the slots 5 under the forward edge of the paper 47, the continued forward motion of the holder 21, operated as above, is more or less horizontal by reason of the shape of the slot 31, thereby preventing the needle-points 23 from passing through the bottom sheet, but at the same time increasing the size of the loop until the position as shown in Fig. 4 is attained, when the inclined edge 7 of the disk 4 is about to enter the loop formed. The continued motion of the needle-holder 21 to complete the forward travel thereof will, by the shape of the slot 31 and roller 32, cause the forward end of the same to drop and, if required, support the edge of the paper for a predetermined time and also allow the disk 4 to separate the bottom sheet from the bulk of paper 47. The rearward travel of the holder 21 withdraws the needle-points 23 from the paper and allows the same to drop into a suitable position for further operations.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a paper-separator, the combination of means for supporting the paper, a separatingdisk, needles, and means for causing said needles to travel upward and forward to engage the lowest sheet of paper and to form a loop therein and then to travel horizontally to support the separated sheet, substantially as described.
2. In a paper-separator, the combination of means for supporting the paper, a slotted disk, at needle-holder, needles and means for ope *ating said disk and needle'holder simultaneously to cause the needles to engage the lowest sheet of paper and to form a loop therein and to cause the disk to enter said loop, substantially as described.
3. In a paper-se mrator, the combination of supports for the paper andoperating mechanism, a vertical shaft, a slotted disk mounted on said shaft, a needle-holder and needles carried thereby, said needles being adapted to engage the lowest sheet of the paper, and gearing operating said needle-holders to move the needles upward and forualrd by the revolution of said vertical shaft, substantially as described.
4. In a paper-separater, the combinat ion of a needle-holder, needles therein, an arm projecting from said needle-holder and provided with a slot and adjustably secured thereto, a guiding-pin operating in said slot, :1. vertical pivoted arm connected to said nemlle-holder, and a cam for operating said arm to reciprocate said needle-holder, substantially as described.
5. In a paper-soparator, the combination of a vertical shaft, a slotted separator-disk carried thereby, a needle-holder, needles therein, a pivoted arm connected to said needle.- holder, a cam for vibrating said arm, and gearing whereby said cam is driven by the motion of said vertical shaft, substantially as described.
6. Ina paper-separater, the combination of a needle-holder, needles carried thereby, a pivoted arm on which said nemlle-holder is mounted, a cam, and adjustable conneeti ms between the cam and the needle-holder whereby the throw of the latter may be varied, substantially as described.
7. In a paper-separater, the combination of a needle-holder and needles therein, a pivoted vertical arm supporting said needle-holder, a slotted arm engaging the upper part of said vertical arm, a cam for moving said slotted arm, and means for adjusting said vertical arm within the slot of the horizontal arm to vary the throw of the needle-lmlder, substantially as described.
8. In a pzmer-separator, the combination of a vertical operating-shaft, a slotted separatordisk carried thereby, a needle-holder, needles therein, a pivoted vertical arm for operating said needle-holder, a horizontal slotted arm for operating said vertical arm, means for adjusting said vertical arm in the slot in the horizontal arm, a horizontal shaft carryinga cam for operating said horizontal arm, and gearing between said horizontal and vertical shafts, substantially as described.
' 9. In an improved separator for paper and the like, the combination of a slotted disk, a vertical shaft, a horizontal shaft,gearing between said shafts, a cam, an adjustable horizontal arm provided with a slot and having a pin thereon, an adjustable vertical arm, a sliding bracket carrying the same, a needleholder, needles therein, and a girder, substantially as described.
10. In an improved separator for paper and the like, the combination of 'a slotted disk, a vertical shaft, a horizontal shaft, gearing between said shafts, a cam, an adjustable horizontal arm provided with a slot and having a pin thereon, an adjustable vertical arm, an adjustable bracket carrying said vertical arm, a needle-holder, needles therein, means for. adjusting said needles, and a girder, substantially as described.
11. In a separator for paper and the like, the combination of a slotted disk, a'vertic'al shaft, a horizontal shaft, gearing between said shafts, a cam, an adjustable horizontal arm provided with a slot therein, and having a pin carrying said vertical arm, a needle-holder,
needles supported insaid holder, means for adjusting said needles, an adjustable plate having a curved slot therein, a roller working in said curved slot, and a girder, substantially as described.
13. An improved separator for paper and the like, comprising a slotted disk, a vertical "shaft, a horizontal shaft, gearing between said shafts, a cam, an adjustable horizontal arm provided with'a slot and having a pin thereon, an adjustable vertical arm, an adjustable bracket carryingsaid vertical arm, a needle holder, needles mounted in said holder, means for adjusting said needles, an adjustable plate shafts, a cam, an adjustable horizontal arm having a pin thereon and provided with a slot, an adjustable vertical arm, an adjustable bracket carrying said vertical arm, a needleholder, needles mounted in said holder, means for adjusting said needles, an adjustable plate provided with a curved slot, a roller working insaid curved slot, an adjustable bracket for carrying said roller, agirder, a chain-wheel, a hopper, rollers, adjustable bearings therefor and a cover for the paper, substantially as described.
