Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. WUEST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrenceburg, in the county of Dearborn and State of Indiana, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Saw-Filing D evices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionv of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in saw-filing devices.
One object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient device of this character which is adapted for general saw purposes and which may be effectively manipulated by an unskilled person.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of this character which will be self-feeding-that is, one which will feed the [ile-carrier and file-support along the saw at each forward stroke of the file, so that the latter will engage a different tooth upon its next forward stroke.
Another object of my invention is to provide for various adjustments of the file, so that any desired bevel, pitch, and depth of cut may be given to the saw-tooth.
Another object is to provide a simple and efficient file-carrier support which may be 0 mounted upon a saw or upon the jaws of a vise or clamp and which is adjustable to receive saws of different sizes.
A further object of my invention is to improve and simplify the construction andV operation of devices of this character, and thereby render the same more efficient and durable in use and less expensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a saw-filing device constructed in accordance with my invention and mounted upon the jaws of a vise or the like between which is clamped a saw. Fig. l2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. l and showing the file-holder and its guide in elevation. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 4L 4 in Fig. 1. F1g. 5 is a perspective view of the file-holder and its guide looking at the under side of the same. Figs. 6 and 7 are detail sectional views taken, respectively. on lines 6 6 and 7 7in Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a detail plan view showing a modified form of feeding device for the file. Fig. 9 is a detail side elevation of the same. Fig. 10 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 10 lO in Fig. 8. Referring more particularly to the drawings, A denotes the saw-blade, clamped between the jaws B and C of a vise or clamp of any suitable construction, and the numeral 1 denotes my improved saw filing device, which is mounted upon said jaws and the saw, as shown. rIhe device 1 comprises a saddle-like frame or support 2, which is adapted to straddle the sawblade and the jaws of the vise and which is free to slide thereon. Said frame comprises two similarsubstantially U-shaped half-sections 3 and 4, which are adjustably secured together to permit the width of the slot or groove 5, which is formed between them, to be varied in order to receive saw-blades of different thicknesses. Said groove 5 extends longitudinally, as shown, and its upper and inner end is V-shaped, as shown, to permit the saw-teeth to pass therethrough. The adjustable connection of said half-sections 3 and 4 is preferably effected by forming the ends of section 4 with'transversely-disposed slots 6, through which are passed screws 7 which have their lower ends screwed into threaded openings or sockets 8, formed in the ends of the half-section 3, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Formed atl one end of said half-section 4 are two upwardly-projecting integral ears 9, between which is pivoted, as at 10, an arm 11, which is adapted to swing in a vertical plane above the said groove or slot 5. Said arm 11 carries at its outer end afile-holder and guide, which by reason of the swinging movement of said arm may be raised or lowered in a vertical plane. The downward movement of said armll is limited by an adjusting-screw 12, which is passed through a threaded opening in said arm and has its lower end engaging the upper side of the half-section A of the frame. I ivotally mounted upon the outer end of said arm, as shown at 13, is-a head 14, which is formed with a centrally-disposed opening 15 and a roughened surface 16 upon its under side, said roughened surface IIO being here shown in the form of radially-extending ribs. Pivotally and adjustably mounted by means of a set-screw 17, which passes through said opening 15 in said head, is a guide or carriage 18, in which a tile-holder 19 is mounted to reciprocate in a fixed straight line.
Said screw 17 -is form ed with an annular shoulder 20, which engages the upper surface of said head, and its lower threaded end is screwed into a threaded opening formed in said guide 18, which latter is preferably of rectangular form, as shown. lt will be seen that the guide 18 is thus pivotally mounted to swing angularly upon the head 14 and that the same may be secured in any adjusted position by tightening said screw 17. The roughened lower su rface of the head 14, which engages said guide 18, will prevent the latter from turning after it has been adjusted. i
The tile-holder 19 comprises a bar or rod 21, which slides through said guide 18 and has upon its outer end a guide 22 in the form of an open arc-shaped frame of rectangular form. Adjustably secured in the opening or slot in said guide 22 is a block 23, which has an inwardly extending recessed portion 24, in which is inserted one end of a le D. The adjustment of said block 24 is effected by forming the same with a rectangular portion 25, which projects into the opening or slot in said guide 23 and which is formed with a screw-threaded socket into which a clampingscrew 26 is screwed. Said screw passes through a washer 27 and also through the slot in said guide 22, so that when it is screwed into the block 23 the latter'will be securely clamped upon the guide 22. The opposite end of the tile D is secured in the ferrule 28 upon an operating-handle 29. Said ferrule 28 projects through a clamping loop or band 30, through which the inner end of the sliding bar 21 also projects, as shown. Intermediate said ferrule and said bar within said clamp is a block 31, and passing through the threaded opening in the upper end of said clamp is a set-screw 32, which has its lower end impinging againstsaid sliding bar 21, so that the v latter and also the ferrule 28 are adjustably secured in said clamp or loop 30. It will be seen that the clamp 30 may be adjusted longitudinally upon the bar 21 to receive sawles of different lengths and that the ferrule 28 may be turned axially in said clamp to turn the saw-tile axially to any desired angle. The block 31 is prevented from falling out of the clamp 30 when the latter is adjusted by providing it with a lug 33, which projects into a groove or recess formed in one of the inner faces of said clamp, as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings. It will be seen that the sliding bar 21 is slightly curved or liared at its outer end, which curve or flare corresponds to that in the outer end of the cutting edge'of the file, so that the latter will make a full cut upon each stroke. When the le has a straight cutting edge, this curvature or flare in the bar 21 is omitted.
lt will be seen upon reference to Fig. 5 of the drawings that the file-engaging block 23 may be adjusted in the guide 22 transversely with respect to the sliding bar 21, so that the file D may be secured in angular position with respect to said bar. AThis adjustment or disposition of the file upon the file-hold er is provided to cause theframe 2 to move longitudinally upon the saw at each forward stroke of the file or file-holder, so that when the latter takes its next forward stroke the Elle will engage a diferent tooth. The degree of movement of said frame 2 is controlled by the degree 0E angularity of the ile with respect to the file-holder or bar 21, so that by adjusting said block 23 to a greater or less extent the framemay be caused to move sufficiently to permit the file to jump or skip one or more saw-teeth, as desired. In order to set the le at the desired angle, a scale 34 is provided upon the under side of the guide 24, and coacting with said scale is a centrally-disposed notch or mark 35, provided upon said block 23. It will be seen that by adjusting the mark 35 to the number on the scale 34 which corresponds to the number of teeth to the inch on the saw which is lto be sharpened the angular disposition of the le will besuch as to cause the frame 2 to move forward the desired distance. l
The operation of my improved saw-filing device is as follows: The saw to be filed is clamped between the jaws of the vise and the frame 2 is slipped endwise upon the same, as shown. The block 23 is then adjusted in the holder to secure the file in its desired angular position with respect to the latter, and by adjusting the ferrule 28 in the clamp 30 the file may be turned axially to properly engage the saw-teeth. By meansof the set-screw 11 the guide 18 is then adjusted angularly to give the teeth their proper bevel, and by adjusting the set-screw 12 in the arm 11 the depth of the cut made by the file may be regulated.- When the parts are thus adjusted and the {ileholder is reciprocated in the guide 18, the tile will sharpen one of the saw-teeth upon its forward movement and at the same time cause the frame 2 to move longitudinally upon the saw and the vise, so that when the tileholder is again moved forward the lile will engage a different tooth. Usually a file is so adjusted that every other tooth is sharpened whenthe frame moves in one direction across the saw and the remaining tee'th are similarly led when the frame is moved in the opposite direction. lf it is desired to make two or three strokes upon the same tooth, the frame 2 is drawn back after each stroke, as will be readily understood. It will be also understood that when the le is adjusted in a parallelrelation with respect to the bar 21 the i frame will not be moved at each stroke'and IOO the device may be used similar to other devices of this character.
In Figs. 8 to 14, inclusive, of the drawings I have shown another way in which the file may be mounted in order to cause it to feed or move the carriage or saddle 1 laterally at each stroke of the file. In this modification of my invention the angular disposition of the file is effected at the point where its carriage is mounted or supported, instead of at one of the ends of the file-holder, as in the form first described. As shown,the file-holder guide or carriage 18 has a limited pivotal movement upon a supporting-plate 40, which is in turn adjustably pivoted upon the head 14 of the frame 2. This supporting-plate 40, as seen in Fig. 14, is rectangular in form and has formed upon its upper faces concentric with the opening for the adjusting and pivot setscrew 17 an angular series of serrations or teeth 111, which are adapted to engage the under side of the head 14 to prevent casual shifting of said plate 40 with respect to said head 14 after the former has been adjusted. Said plate 40 is also formed with a longitudinally-disposed slot 42, which has along one of its walls scale or graduation marks 43, the purpose of which will presently appear. Adjustably secured in said slot 42 is a stop-block 44. This block is slidably mounted in said slot 42 and is adapted to be adjustably secured therein by a set-screw 45, as clearly7 shown in Fig. 12 of the drawings. Said block 44 has a portion 46, which projects downwardly beneath the plate 40 and into a segmental-shaped slot or opening 47, which is formed in the guide or carriage 18 beneath said slot 42 of the plate 40. It will be seen that owing to the projection of said block into said slot 47 the swinging movement of the plate 40 and the guide 18 with respect to each other will be limited, since the side walls of said slot 47 will engage the sides of said block when the guide is swung to either side to its fullest extent, and it will be seen that by adjusting said block 44 longitudinally in the slot 42 of the supporting-plate 40 the portions 46 of said block will be moved longitudinallyT in the slot 47 or toward or from the pivot of the guide 18, and hence the extent of movement of said guide with respect to said plate may be varied, as desired. rIhe purpose of this adjustment will be readily seen. By swinging the file-holder angularly at the end of its return stroke the file will be caused to jump or slip one or more teeth, according to the angular movement of the file and its holder, which angular movement is controlled by the adjustment of the block 44 in the slots 42 and 47. When the block 44 is adjacent to the outer end of the slot 47, the file-holder will be permitted to have a greater angular movement than when said block is adjacent to the inner end Vof said slot 47, and hence a greater number of teeth will be jumped or skipped by the file at each stroke in the former case than in the latter. When it is desired to dispense with this automatic feed and to operate the file-holder so that the file may make any number of strokes on the same tooth, the block 44, which has a pointed outer end 48, is so adjusted in the slot 42 that said end engages a V-shaped notch or recess 49, formed in the outer end of the slot 47 in the guide 18. In this way it will be seen that the said guide and the plate 40 will be rigidly secured together and in alinement with each other, so that they will not have angular movement with respect to each other.
fhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of. my invention, it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction herein set forth, since various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacriiicing any of-the advantages of this invention. Y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I 1. In a saw-filing device, a frame adapted to be slidably engaged with the saw to be filed, a movable file-holder upon said frame, guided for reciprocating movement in a fixed straight line, arid means for mounting a iile upon said holder at an angle to the plane of movement thereof, whereby said frame will be slid along the saw as said file-holder is operated.
2. In a saw-filing device, a frame adapted to be slidably engaged with a saw, a reciprocat-ory file-holder upon said frame, guided for movement in a xed straight line, and means for securing a file upon said holder at an angle to the plane of movement thereof, whereby said frame will be slid along the saw as said file-holder is reciprocated.
3. In a saw-filing device, a frame adapted to be slidably engaged with a saw, a guide upon said frame, a file-holder mounted to reciprocate in said guide in a iiXed straight line, and means for adjusting a file upon and angularly with respect to the plane of movement of said holder, wherelny7 said frame will be moved longitudinally upon said saw as said Ele-holder is reciprocated, substantially as described.
5. The combination of a frame adapted to be slidably engaged with a saw, a swinging element upon said frame, an adjustable means for limiting the movement of said element, an an- IOO IIO
gularly-adjustable guide upon said element, a tile-holder mounted to reciprocate in said guide in a iixed straight line, tile-engaging elements upon said holder, and means for adjusting one of said file-engaging elements to hold a Ede angularly with respect to the planeof movement of said holder, substantially as described.
6. The combination of a frame adapted to be slidably engaged with a saw, an arm pivotally mounted upon said frame to swing in a vertical plane, a screw for limiting the swinging movement of said arm, an adjustable guide pivotally mounted upon said arm to swing in a plane at right angles to the plane of movement of said arm, a {ile-holder mounted to reciprocate in said guide in a {iXed straight line, means upon said holder for engaging one end of a le, an element mounted to slide transversely upon said holder and adapted to engage the opposite end of the file, and means for securing said sliding element t0 hold the tile angularly with respect to the plane of movement of said holder, substantially as described.
7. In a saw-filing device, the combination with a guide, of a file-holder comprising an element slidably mounted in said guide, a transversely-extending guide upon one end of said element, a Ble-engaging block adjustably secured in said transversely-extending guide, and means upon said element for securing the opposite end of a file, substantially as described.
8. In a saw-tiling device, the combination with a guide, of a hie-holder comprising an element slidably mounted in said guide, a transversely-extending guide upon one end of said element, a rile-engaging block adjustably secured in said transversely-extending guide, a clamping-band upon said element, a le-han dle in said band, aspacing-block in said band between said element and said handle, and a set-screw in said band for adjustably clamping said element and said handle in said band, substantially as described.
