Description

No. 809,063. PATENTED JAN. 2, 1906. P. A. JACOBS. DRAIN VALVE FOR HYDRANT PIPES.
APPLICATION FILED APR-13. 1905.
WITNESSES M/VE/V T01? A TTOHNEVS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DRAIN-VALVE FOR HYDRANT-PIPES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2, 1906.
Application filed April 13,1905. Serial No. 255.261.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK ALFRED JACOBS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jamaica, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drain- Valves for Hydrant-Pipes, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to valves for watersupply pipes, and particularly to what are known as drain-valves for water-hydrant pipes; and the object thereof is to provide an improved valve of this class whereby when the valve is closed the water in the hydrantpipe connection will be drained ofli' through the valve-casing and prevented from freezing in'said hydrant-pipe connection.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated bysuitable reference characters, said drawing being a sectional side view showing my improved valve and water-supply pipe with hydrant-pipe connections.
In the drawing forming part of this specification I have shown at a an ordinary watersupply pipe, such as is usually employed for supplying water to hydrants or hydrantplugs, and in the practice of my invention I provide a valve-casing b, with the opposite ends of which the pipe a or the parts thereof are connected. The valve-casing b is provided with a horizontally-arranged partition 6 forming a bottom chamber 6 and a top chamber 1), and in practice the water enters the chamber 6 in the direction of the arrow as, and the partition I) is provided with a central opening b which forms a communication between the chambers b and 6 The casing 11 is provided with an upwardlydirected tubular extension I), closed by a tubular screw-threaded plug 0, through which passes a threaded valve-stem d, and the parts I) and a form a hood through which the valvestem passes, and said valve-stem is provided at its upper end with a hand-wheel or similar device d and at its lower end with a valvehead 6, having a depending tubular member or casing e which passes through the opening 6 in the partition 6 and closely fits said opening, and between the valve-head e and the partition 5 is placed a packing-gasket 6 and in the upper portion of the depending tubular casing 6 which is connected with the valve-head e and forms a part of a valve for closing the oening 6 are annularly-arranged ports or passages e, which when the valve is seated are below the partition 6 as shown in the drawing, but which when the valve is raised to permit the water to flow through the valve-casing b are above said partition.
At one side of the valve-casing and at any desired distance therefrom the water-supply pipe a is provided with a hydrant-couplingf, with which is connected a hydrant-pipe f and connected with the valve-head e at the corresponding side thereof is an arm g, having a head g through which is passed a vertically-movable rod 9 and the rod g is provided below the head g of the arm g with a stationary collar g and above said head with a movable collar 9 and above the collar 9 with another stationary collar g", between which and the collar 9 is a spiral spring 9 The upper end of the rod 9 passes through the top of the end portion of the valve-casing b and into a hood or cap it, in which said rod is free to move, and the lower end of said rod passes downwardly through the bottom of said end of the valve-casing b and is provided with a valve 72, adapted to close ports or passages h in the bottomiof said end of the valvecasing.
Wheneverit it desired to sppply water to the hydrant or hydrant connection, the valvestem d is turned so as to raise the valve-head e, and this also raises the tubular casing e connected with said valve-head, and when the said valve-head is raised until the ports or passages Z are above the partition the water flows into the chamber 6 of the valve-casing and up through the tubular casing e and out through the ports or passages e into the chamber 1), from which it flows to the hydrant or hydrant connection. In the operation of raising the valve-head e in he manner described the valve h is also raised and the ports or passages k are closed and remain closed as long as the water is flowing to the hydrant or through the hydrant connections, and when it is desired to out 01f the flow of water the valve-stem d is turned in the opposite direction until the parts assume the position shown in the drawing, and in this operation the rod 9 moves downwardly and water in the hydrant-pipe or hydrant connections and in the pipe at between the same and the valve-casing b flows back into the valve-casing and is drained off through the ports or passages 72/ It will therefore be seen that when the opening 6- in the partition b or the port or passage formed by said opening is open and the water is flowing through the valve-casing the ports or passages h are always closed and when the flow of water through the valve-casing is cut off the said ports or passages k are always open and the water in the chamber b and in that part of the pipe a between the hydrant and the valveeasing is drained ofl through the ports or passages h. It will be understood that one of my improved valves maybe used in connec tion with a hydrant wherever a hydrant is used, and it will also be apparent that a drainvalve of the class described herein may also be employed in other positions wherever such devices are necessary.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim .as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A valve device designed for use in a supplypipe of a hydrant adjacent the hydrant connection, said valve device comprising a casing provided with a horizontal partition dividing said casing into top and bottom chambers, a threaded valve-stem passing downwardly into the valve-chamber within said casing and provided with a valve adapted to close a port or passage in said partition, said port or passage being normally closed; a valve-rod vertically movable through the end of the casing adjacent to the hydrant connection and provided with a valve adapted to close a port or passage in the bottom of said casing which is normally open; an arm connected with the first-named valve and with said valve-rod, a spring mounted on said rod above said valve, a collar secured to said rod above said spring, and means for limiting the upward movement of said rod, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed myname, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 11th day of April, 1905.
FREDERICK ALFRED JACOBS.
