INTERCHANGEABLE CULTIVATOR AND SEED-DRILL.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ACOB B. SMILEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Interchangeable Cultivators and Seed-Drills, of which the following is a specification and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates to riding or sulky cultivators and drills, and has for its object the provision of means for rendering an implement of this kind adaptable for either service, the frame being so constructed that there may be attached thereto either shovel-supporting beams or seed-d rill mechanism.
The invention consists in the structure hereinafter described and which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the machine provided with cultivator-shovels. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the machine provided with seeder mechanism. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same, and Figs. 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and are details of the seeder mechanism and of the frame of the machine.
The frame of the machine is carried by a pair of wheels 16, and its axle 17 is shown as being in arch form and vadapted to carry two gangs of shovels and to straddle a row of growing plants. Any suitable means for attaching the team may be employed, such as the pole 18 and its appurtenances, which may be attached directly to the arch of the axle 17.
A pair of loops 19 20 is secured to the top of the arch of the axle 17 for receiving the ends of a pair of beams 21 22 for carrying the cultivator mechanism or a similar pair of beams 23 24 for carrying the seeder mechanism, such beams in either case being secured within the loops by means of pins or bolts 25, setting down through the loop, the beam, and the arch of the axle. An arch 27 is suspended from the beams 21 22, as shown, being secured toacr0ss-bar28, attached thereto. The lower ends of this arch 27 are bent outwardly to form skeins or pivots for carrying the shovelbeams 29 30, to which shovels 31 of any suitable form may be secured, the latter beams being supported at their rearward ends and each of these beams being carried by a chain 32, depending from a swinging arm 33, pivotally attached to the beams 21 22 and controlled by a hand-lever 34, pivoted to the rearward end of the beams 21 22 and connected to the swinging arm 33 by a link 35. A seat 36 for the driver may be swung between the beams 21 22,- and suitable braces, as 37, may extend from the rearward end of the beams 21 22 to the forward end of the beams 29 30. A draft-hook 38 may be attached to the forward end of each-of the beams 29 30. This cultivator mechanism may be removed from the frame of the machine by merely withdrawing the bolts-or pins and gives place to the seeder mechanism, the upper beams 23 24 of which are secured in like manner within the loops 19 20.
A pair of loops 39 40 is secured to the lower ends of the uprights of the arched axle 17 for receiving the forward ends of the lower beams 41 42 of the seeder mechanism, and such beams are secured within these loops by any suitable means, such as the pins 43 44. The upper and lower pairs of beams of the seeder mechanism are preferably secured together by brace-rods 45 46.
A pair of tubular shovels 47 48 of ordinary form is carried by the frame of the seeder mechanism, each shovel, as 47, being supported from a bracket 49 by means of a swinging arm or bar 50, and provision being made for raising and lowering the shovels, as by means of a chain 51, hung from a swinging arm 52, controlled by a hand-lever 53, such controlling mechanism being substantially identical with that used in connection with the cultivator-shovels or furrow-openers. Aoovering-scraper or furrow-closer 54 is carried by and behind each of the shovels, as 47, as is usual in devices of this kind.
A pair of seed -cans 55 56. is carried by a suitable frame 57, suspended from a crankrod 58, permanently mounted in suitable journals alongthe rearward face of the cross member of the arched axle 17, the crank-arms 59 '60 of this shaft being provided with hooks 61 62, with which the frame 57 may be engaged, the frame being provided with suitable studs 63 for that purpose. The frame 57 is provided with a pair of vertical fins, as 64, one at either end, adapted to run in suitable ways formed on the uprights of the axle 17. As shown, these ways consist in a plate 65, attached to the rearward face of the upright of the axle, and an L-shaped bar 66, the lower member of which is pivoted to the lower end of the plate 65, permitting the bar 66 to be brought parallel with but spaced apart from the rearward face of this plate. The bar may be secured in its upright position by any suitable means, such as a hook 67, secured to the plate and engaging a staple 68 set in the upper end of the bar.
The seed-cans 55 56 are of ordinary construction. As shown, each can, as 55, is provided in its bottom with an aperture 69, through which the seed may drop, this aperture being covered by a rotatable plate 70, secured to the bottom of the can and having apertures, as 71 72, which may be brought successively into register with the aperture 69. Two sets of crown gear-teeth 7 3 7 4 are formed on the lower face of the plate and engage aspur-gear75, slidingly mounted upon a shaft 76, journaled in the frame 57 and carrying a spur-gear 77, adapted to mesh with a similar gear 78, formed on the hub of one of the carrying-wheels, as 16. The gear 75 may be adjusted to engage either of the sets of crown gear-teeth 7 3 74 and may be secured to the shaft by any suitable means, as by a pin 79, setting through the hub of the gear and the shaft.
A spout leads from the lower end of the can 55 to a tube 81, which discharges into the body of the shovel 47. Preferably the spout entirely envelops the lower end of the can and the shaft 76 passes through it. A crank-handle 82 is secured to the crankshaft 58 to enable the driver to turn the shaft to raise the frame 57, thus disengaging the gear 77 from the gear 78 and throwing the Seeder attachment out of action.
The entire seeder mechanism is quickly removed from the frame of the machine by withdrawing the bolts or pins 25 and 4:3 &4: and releasing the hook 67 to permit the frame 57 to be removed from its bearings. These bearings, as well as the rock-shaft 58 and loops 39 40, are permanent attachments of the frame and are not in the way of the cultivator mechanism when the later is in service.
I claim as my invention 1. In combination, a frame mounted on wheels and having attaching means adapted to receive interchangeably either cultivator mechanism comprising a shovel-carrying bar and a plurality of shovels, or seeder mechanism comprisinga suitable dropper and furrowmaking device.
2. In combination, an arching axle carried by wheels, attaching means formed on the axle for interchangeably attaching seeder mechanism or cultivator mechanism to the axle, such attaching means comprising loops formed on the cross member of the axle, and loops formed on the uprights ofthe axle for cooperating with the first-mentioned loops in attaching the seeder mechanism.
3. In combination, a frame comprising an arch-form axle and being mounted on wheels; ways attached to the vertical members of the arch; aframe adapted to move in the ways; a seed-can carried by the latter frame; mechanism for discharging seed from the can; and driving means carried by one of the wheels, with which the seed-discharging mechanism comes into, operative engagement when the can-carrying frame is in its lower position.
4:. In combination, an arching axle carried by wheels; a rocking crank-shaft journa'led on the cross member of the arch; slideways formed on the uprights of the arch; and seeder mechanism carried by the crank-shaft and running in the slideways.
5. In combination, an arch-form axle carried by wheels; a bar pivotally attached to each upright of the axle; means for securing the bar parallel to the upright of the axle; and a seeder-carrying frame adapted to slide between the bar and the axle.
