To all whom it Weary-concern:

Be it known that we, CLARENCE M. BROD- NAX and PHILIP F. KING, citizens of the United States, residing in the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, Kings county, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Closures, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

Our invention relates to improvements in means for sealing receptacles or containers, and the same has for its object more particularly to provide a simple, efficient, and inexpensive closure for bottles and analogous receptacles or containers, which closure may be easily applied to the bottle to effectually seal the same and which may be readily removed or detached therefrom by the consumer without necessitating the use of a tool or implement.

To the attainment of these ends our invention consists in the novel details of construction and in the combination, connection, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a central vertical section taken on the line 1 1 of Fig. 4, showing the upper part of a bottle provided with a closure constructed according. to and embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the closure with the parts extended, and Fig. 4 is a top view of the bottle with the closure applied.

In said drawings, 10 designates a bottle of ordinary construction having a neck 11, provided with a shoulder 12, and 13 denotes the closure, comprising a dished cap portion 14, from the opposite sides of which extend integral arms 15 15. Each of said arms 15 15 is provided upon one of its longitudinal edges adjacent to the cap portion 14 with a laterallyprojecting integral car 16. By preference these ears 16 16 are arranged to extend outwardly from said arms in opposite directions, as shown at Fig. 3.

17 denotes a disk of packing, preferably made of cork, which is disposed Within the cap portion 14, and 18 denotes a piece of wire which may be dented at 19 to receive the arms 15 15 and has its ends secured together below theshoulder 12 of the neck 11.

The closure may be applied to the bottles by first bending upward and inward the ends of the arms 15 15, so that the upper extremities thereof will extend to a point. above the ears 16 16 thereof, and the said ears 16 16 then bent inward against the upper folded extremities of the arms 16 16. Hereupon the ends of the wire 18 are passed through the looped ends of the arms 15 15 and the closure adjusted upon the neck of the bottle with its cap portion 14 and cork disk 17 therein in position over its top. The cap 14 and disk 17 are then firmly pressed downwardly upon the top of the neck in order to conform the disk 17 to the under side of the dished cap, and thus effectually seal the bottle. The closure is then secured in position by twisting the ends of the wire 18.

It will of course be understood that the cap 14 may be made of any desired shape and that the same may be provided with any desired number of arms 15 15, having the locking-ears 16 1.6, and that instead of a wire 18 being employed, as herein shown and described, a metal band or any other convenient fastening means may be substituted in lieu thereof.

Without limiting ourselves to the precise details of construction, which may be varied within the scope of the invention. What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. A bottle-closure comprising a cap, arms extending therefrom, means adapted to em brace a bottle-neck and said arms, and means for securing the free ends of said arms, substantially as specified.

2. A bottle-closure comprising acap, arms extending therefrom, means adapted to embrace a bottle-neck and said arms intermediate their ends, and means for securing the frede ends of said arms, substantially as specifie 3. A bottle-closure comprising a cap, arms extending therefrom, means adapted to embrace a bottle-neck, and said arms, and means arranged upon said arms adapted to engage and hold the free ends thereof, substantially as specified.

4. A bottle-closure comprising a cap, arms extending therefrom having their endsfolded upon the remainder of said arms, a wire adapted to embrace a bottle-neck extending through said looped arms, and locking devices for engaging and holding the folded ends of said arms, substantially as specified.

5. A bottle-closure comprisinga cap having a plurality of arms extending therefrom, having their ends folded upon the remainder of said arms, a wire adapted to embrace a bottle-neck extending through said looped-arms, and locking devices arranged upon said arms adapted to engage and hold the folded ends of said arms, substantially as specified.

6. A bottle-closure comprising a cap having a plurality of arms extending therefrom, having their ends folded upon the remainder of said arms to form looped portions, a Wire adapted to embrace a bottle-neck extending through the looped portions of saidarms, and locking devices provided upon said arms intermediate the cap and looped portions adapted to engage and hold the free ends of said arms locked to their folded position, substantially as specified.

7. A bottle-closure comprising a cap having a plurality of arms extending therefrom having their ends folded upon the remainder of said arms to form looped portions, a Wire adapted to embrace a bottle-neck extending through said looped portions, and laterallyprojecting portions or ears upon said arms adapted to engage and hold the free ends of said arms to their folded positions, substantially as specified.

8. A bottle-closure comprising a dished cap having a plurality of arms extending therefrom having their ends folded upon the remainder of said arms to form looped portions, a Wire adapted to embrace a bottle-neck extending through said looped portions, and laterally-projecting ears arranged upon the edges of said arms intermediate the dished cap and the looped portions of said arms, adapted to engage and hold the free ends of said arms locked to their folded positions, substantially as specified.

9. A bottle-closure comprising a dished cap having a plurality of arms extending therefrom having their ends folded upon the remainder of said arms to form looped portions, a disk of packing arranged in said cap, a Wire adapted to embrace a bottle-neck extending through said looped portions, and laterallyprojecting ears arranged upon the edges of said arms adjacent to the edge of said cap adapted to engage and hold the free ends of said arms locked to their folded positions, substantially as specified.
