Platform Scales.
No. 80,857. Patented Aug. 11, 1868.
W653 es Zia e7: Z327 @fi, 0/7 W flea/W gniteh giants gaunt @ffi JOHN- DECKER, OF SPARTA, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO J. B. BOSS AND 0. o. CLARK.
Letters Patent No. 80,857, dated August 11, 1868 tit: tlgtll11lt numb in in tips: 3mm; indent ant making part Hi lip same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN DECKER, of Sparta, in the county of Sussex, and State of New Jersey, have invented new and improved Platform-Scales; and I do here declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved balance-scales.
Figure 2 is a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new platformscale, which is combined with a spring-balance, in such a manner that the weight of an article placed on the platform will be indicated on the spring-balance.
This invention consists in the use of a yoke-shaped lever, which rests with its two ends upon stationary supports, while its middle is suspended from the hook or spring-rod of a spring-balance. The platform is sus pended from the lever, near to its pivoted end, and between the pivot and the suspended part of the lever.
The platform is attached to elastic straps, which are suspended from the lever, and which rest on bent plates, also suspended from the lever, the said bent plates being between the straps and the fulcrum of the lever, their curve being described from the fulcrum as a centre. The object of these straps and curved plates is to keep the weight, during the up or down movement of the lever, always the same distance from the fulcrum.
A, in the drawing, represents a yoke-shaped lever, which is, on its ends, fitted upon the upright posts B B, the lever turning upon pivots a a, which are either attached to the posts, or to the lever, as may be desiredl The middle portion of the lever A is suspended from the hook or red of a spring-balance, C, which is attached, in any suitable manner, to a suitable stationary device.
D represents the platform. The same has two uprights E E, which are, by means of elastic straps!) b, suspended from the lever A, as is clearly shown in fig. 1. The straps b b fit against plates 0 e, which are suspended from the lever A, as is clearly shown in fig. 1, for the purpose above -set. fort-h.
The spring-balance can be of suitable construction, with a straight or circular dial, as may be desired.
A weight placed upon the platform will cause the suspended end of the lever A to be drawn down, and to stretch the spring in the balance C, when the latter will indicate the number of pounds that are on the platform.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent i 1. A combined platform and spring-balance scale, made and operating substantially as herein shown and described.
.2. The yoke-shaped lever, when pivoted at its ends to stationary uprights, while its middle portion is suspended from a spring, the weighing-platform being suspended from the lever, between the supported and suspended part of the same, substantially as herein shown and described. I
3. The combination of the elastic straps b b with the curved plates 0 e, for the purpose of suspending the platform from the yoke-shaped lever, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. The arrangement and combination with each other, of the platform I), straps b 1;, plates c c, lever A, uprights B, and spring-balance O, all made and operating substantially as herein shown and described.
' JOHN DECKER.
