To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,WILLIAM IITsoHANTz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orrville, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire Line Attachments for Well-Drilling Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a detached view of the rocking yoke, together with the different parts belonging thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing a portion of a well-drilling machineframe and illustrating such portions of the machine as are necessary to illustrate the present invention properly applied to a welldrilling machine.
The present invention has relation to wire line attachments for well-drilling machines, and has for its object to provide the necessary amount of spring action wherein a wire or cable is employed to impart a striking movement to a drill.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents a portion of the frame, which in this in stance constitutes the sills of the frame. I To the sills 1 of the frame is journaled or otherwise attached the shaft 2, upon which shaft is mounted the yoke 3, which yoke carries the axle 4, upon which axle is loosely and slidably mounted the grooved wheel 5, around which grooved wheel is located the wire or cable 6, which wire or cable leads from the let-out drum 7 and thence under the wheel 8, which wheel is carried by the rocking bar 9, which rocking bar may be journaled at its lower end upon the shaft 2.
For the purpose of imparting a vibrating movement to the rocking bar 9 the pitman 10 is provided, which pitman is pivotally attached in any convenient and well-known manner to the rocking bar 9 and its opposite end journaled to the crank 11, which crank is fixed to the power-shaft 12 or its equivalent. The parts for imparting a rocking movement to the bar 9 within themselves form no particular part of the present invention except they are necessary elements to produce a complete machine. derstood that the wire or cable 6 is to be extended upward and over the ordinary derrickpulley and thence downward, and to which cable is attached in the ordinary manner the usual tools for well-drilling purposes. These last-mentioned parts are not illustrated and need no illustration, as they do not pertain to the present invention except in a conventional way. The yoke 3 is located substantially as shown and its bottom or lower end extended a greater distance from the shaft 2 than its upper end, thereby increasing the leverage for the purpose hereinafter described. To the bottom or lower end of the yoke 3 is pivotally attached the rod 13, which rod is extended through the bracket 14, which bracket is fixed to the frame of the machine and is so arranged that it is free to move back and forth or to reciprocate as hereinafter described. Upon the rod 13 is mounted the spring 15, which spring is located between the bracket 14 and the inner nut 16. It will be understood that when a downward pull is given to the cable 6 said cable will have a tendency and does pull the top or upper end of the yoke 3 toward the let-out drum 7, thereby moving the bottom or lower end of said yoke away from said drum, which causes the rod 13 to move through its aperture 17, formed in the bracket 14, thereby compressing the spring 15; but when the cable is released by the upward movement of the bar 9 the spring 15 will exert its stored force to pull the lower end of the yoke 3 toward the let-out drum 7 and move the upper end of said yoke, together with the grooved wheel 5, away from said let-out drum, thereby producing a rebound of the drill-tool after it has given its stroke. It will be understood that by this arrangement the proper spring action is given to the wire or cable 9 to produce a sudden stroke and rebound.
In well-drilling machines wherein a fibrous rope is employed the necessary spring is contained within the rope itself to give the proper rebound of the tool; but in wire or cables wherein metal is employed there is no such spring action, but by my peculiar arrangement the spring-actuated yoke 3 produces It will be un-- the desired spring action, Which action is practically the same, in efiect, as the spring action of the fibrous rope.
Having fully described my invention.,What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a Wire or metal cable attachment for Well-drilling machines, the combination of a drill-tool-actuating Wire or cable, a let-out drum for said cable, a rocking bar provided at its free end With a Wheel adapted to engage the Wire or cable, and means for actuating the rocking bar, a yoke pivoted intermediate its ends, one end of said yoke carrying a grooved Wheel adapted for contact With the 15 cable, said grooved Wheel located at a point between the let-out drum and the tool end of the cable, and a spring-actuated bar secured to the yoke opposite its pivotal point from that of the grooved Wheel carried thereby, 20 substantially as and for the purpose specified.
