and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same. f
My invention relates to improvements in i pulp-screens.
It has for its object to provide a machine of this nature which will be capable of a larger output of a better grade than those now commonly in use.
The' invention consists in providing the screen with a longitudinally-arranged exible diaphragm adapted to be oscillated or actuated back and forth and up and down as the screen -is revolved.
The invention also consists of certain other features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims concluding this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of .my invention, Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view of my machine. Fig. 2 is a righthand end view, and Fig. 3 isa vertical crosssectional View on the line a' of Fig. 1.
While the preferred embodiment of my invention is fully shown in the accompanying drawings and its construction and operation are clearly described in this specification, I reserve the right to make suchy changes from the construction shown and described herein as the scope of the claims hereto appended will permit.
In carrying out my invention I provide a revoluble cylindric screen within a suitable casing, having stock inlet and outlet opening and atrough at one end to receive the refuse or sliver. Said screen is separated into two compartments by adouble flexible diaphragm, preferably made of rubber or canvas and secured in any suitable manner to the ends and sides of said screen. The screen is preferably made in two semicircular sections having flanges at their edges, between which the lateral edges of the diaphragm are adapted to-be clamped. Between the two folds of the diaphragm are arranged semicircular frames, Y mounted on an olfset in a longitudinal shaft extending through the screen-cylinder and carrying a'belt-pulley whereby it is operated. The actuation of the shaft with its offset' `causes said frames and the diaphragm to rise and fall, whereby the pulp is forced out trough the screen on rst one half of said screen and then the other. The screen-walls preferably diverge from thev stock-inlet end toward the other end, provided with the refusetrough. The refuse-escape slot in the end plate of the screen is adapted toA be temporarily covered by a spring-pressed plate operated by a hand-lever;l
Referring more particularly to thedrawings, 1 1s the casing, mounted on uprlghts 2. 3 is the screen-cyllnder, comprlslng two sections 4 and 5, and 6 is the shaft, having a central'offset 7 on which are mounted semicircular frames 8, by means of connecting-rods phragm 10 are clamped between the flanges 8O 11 of one section of the screen and the flanges 12 of the other section, and the end portions of said diaphragm are secured to anges 13 14- on the end plates .15 and 16, respectively, by
p rivets or other suitable means. The diaphragm S 5 is preferably secured to the outer surface of the frames 8 by means of strips 17. The shaft extends atone end through the stationary tubular portion 18 of the pulp-inlet passage. Said shaft carries a pulley 19 at its end, 90 whereby it is actuated. The screen has an extension 2O passing over the tubular portion 18 of the pulp-inlet passage, and said extension carries a pulley 21, whereby the screen is revolved. The end plate 15 extends across 95 the inner opening of the tubular portion 18 and has its edge disposed adjacent to the inner surface of the screen, so that the, pulp will be delivered directly to the screen-plates.
The other end plate.1,6 is provided with a Ioo series of arcuate apertures 22 around its edge for the escape of the sliver or refuse to the trough 23,l secured to the casing and having an outlet 23a at its lower portion.
Said apertures 22 are adapted to be closed by 165 a plate 24, pressed into forcible contact with the end of the casing, so as to close said slot by means of coiled springs 25, mounted on L... Ju
pins 26, projecting through said plate and carrying nuts 27 on their outer ends. Said plate has a central projection or sleeve 27, which is connec-ted to a hand-lever 28, pivoted at 29 to the base of the machine. The said plate is normally closed, but may be opened from time to time to clean out the sliver or refuse from the machine.
In operation the stock is fed to the screen by the inlet-passage and is delivered directly upon the screen-plates, as before described. The centrifugal force due to the revolving of the screen throws the pulp against the plate, while the vibrations of the diaphragm tend to force the fine pulp through the screenplates. The screen-pulp passes out through Ithe pulp-outlet, while the refuse is allowed to escape by means of its trough, as described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a cylindric screen, of a flexible diaphragm arranged within said screen longitudinally thereof, and a rotary shaft in said screen having means to cause said diaphragm to vibrate.
2. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a screen, of a double iexible diaphragm and a rotary shaft arranged between the folds of said diaphragm and having means to cause said diaphragm to vibrate.
3. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a cylindric screen, of a double flexible diaphragm and a rotary shaft arranged between the folds of said diaphragm and having means to cause said diaphragm to vibrate.
4. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a cylindrie screen, of a double flexible diaphragm arranged therein, and a rotary shaft having an oset arranged between the folds of said diaphragm.
5. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a revoluble cylindric screen, of a double fiexible diaphragm arranged therein and a rotary shaft having an offset arranged between the folds of said dia phragm.
6. In a machine of the character described, a cylindric screen in two sections and a ilexible diaphragm having its edges fastened between the edges of said sections of the screen and extending across within said screen.
7. In a machine of the character described, a cylindric screen in two sections and a flexible diaphragm having its edges fastened bctween the edges of said sections of the screen and extending across within said screen, and means to cause said diaphragm to vibrate.
8. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a cylindric screen, of a double flexible diaphragm arranged therein and a rotary shaft having an offset carrying a wheel frame or bearing, said shaft arranged between the folds of said diaphragm.
9. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a screen having a ilexible diaphragm arranged therein and means to vibrate said diaphragm, said screen having a series of apertures around the edge of one end plate thereof for the escape of the sliver, of means to normally close said apertures and means to simultaneously remove said closure from all of said apertures to clean out said screen.
10. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a screen having a iexible diaphragm arranged therein and a longitudinally arranged shaft therein carrying means to vibrate said diaphragm, said screen having a series of apertures around 'the edge of one end plate thereof for the escape ofthe sliver, of a plate adapted to cover all of said apertures and having a central sleeve fitting around said shaft, said plate adapted to move on pins passing therethrough against coiled springs arranged around said pins, and a lever pivoted to a fixture and connecting with the sleeve on said plate whereby the latter may be withdrawn to uncover said apertures.
