Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented nec. 5, 1905.
Application filed August 3, 1905. Serial No. 272,548.
To aLZZ zult irl/atp con/cern,.-
Be it known that I, OTIs B. MOYE, a citi- `zen of the United States, residing at Soperton,
use the same, reference being had to the ac through thelaperture to expedite the burningl of the same.
application of my invention.
The invention consists, further, in an apparatusl for boring holes below the surface of the ground in stumps for blasting or other purposes; and it consists in a suitable lever which is anchored at one end to a stump and adapted to carry a threaded socket in which a shaftcarrying auger has a bearing and so arranged that the auger may be held securely while a hole is being bored in the stump.
My invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view .showing the Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the means for holding the shaft-carrying socket.
Reference now being khad to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a lever which may be of any suitable length and vis provided with an opening A therein, and B designates a chain which is anchored to said lever, preferably passing through an aperture transversely formed in the lever, and the ends of said chain are adapted to be' passed about the circumference of a stump and hooked together in the manner shown inthe drawings,
whereby one end of said lever may be securely held and anchored'to the stump.
C designates av spherical socket member which maybe made-either of oneor two pieces and providedz with a central threaded aperture adapted to receive the threads upon a shaft E, having a crank-arm E formed at one end. Y Said shaft E has a bit-socket Gr for the reception of a bit oranger H; In order to hold said socket member,` through which the threaded shaft passes, in position, I provide a strap K, one end of which is hinged at K in the -side of the lever, and said strap is concaved to conform to the'conveXed or spherical circumference of said shaft-carrying member, y and the free end of the strap 'is apertured to receive a bolt N, passing through said lever, and a thumb-nut O is provided to engage the end of said bolt to hold the free end of the strap against the lever and in engagement with said member Gr to hold the'same in place. The opening A in the lever A is of sufficient size to allowfor the adjustment of the shaft at diiferent angles, as will bereadily understood.
r1 he operation of my apparatus will be readily understood when considered in connection with the drawings forming a part of this application, and in applying the device the lever is placed fiat upon the ground and the chain adjusted in the manner shown, the soil about the stump first being removedfor a slight distance down to expose a portion of the tap-root into which it is desired to bore the hole. The lever being adjusted, the auger and the shaft are adjusted in position, as shown, and a diagonal hole may be easily and quickly bored` through the tap-root, the auger being steadied 'by the operator resting his weight upon the stump removed from the ground.
` Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y 1. An apparatus for boring holes in stumps, te. comprising a lever with an opening there- IOO IIO
in, which opening is adapted to permit a shaft t0 pass diagonally therethrough means for anchoring one end of said lever to a stump, a threaded shaft, a bit with auger connected thereto, a bearing member having a threaded aperture through Which said shaft passes, and means'for holding said bearing member frictionally against the marginal outline of said opening, as set forth.
2. An apparatus for boring holes in stumps, &c., comprising a lever with an opening therein, which opening is adapted to permit a shaft to pass diagonally therethrough means for anchoring one end of said lever to a stump, a threaded shaft, a bit with auger connected thereto, a spherical bearing member having a threaded aperture therein engaged by the threads of said shaft, a strap hinged at one end to the edge of said lever and concaved upon one side and engaging said spherical bearing member and designed to hold the same frictionally against the inclined marginal Wall of said opening of the lever, as set forth.
3. An apparatus for boring holes in stumps,
&c. comprising a lever with an opening therein, which opening is adapted to permit a shaft to pass diagonally therethrough means for anchoring one end of said lever to a stump, a threaded shaft, a bit with auger connected thereto, a spherical bearing member having a threaded aperture therein engaged by the threads of said shaft, a strap hinged at one end to the edge of said lever and concaved upon one side and engaging said spherical bearing member and designed to hold the same frictionally against the inclined marginal wall of said opening of the lever, a bolt passing through said lever and engaging the free end of said strap, and a thumb-nutupon said bolt adapted to hold the strap against said bearing member, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ailix my signature in the preseneeof two witnesses.
OTIS B. MOYE.
