STEPHEN M. GREEN AND WILLIAM T. MCFARLAND, OF NEW YORK, N.
PIPE-QBENDER.
' Kings and State of New York, have invented a new andImproved Pipe-Bender, of. which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrlption. 1
This invention relates to improvements in tools for bending pipe, the Object being to provide a tool'of this characterhaving its.
head so shaped as to adapt the tool for bending pipe of different sizes without danger of kinking or flattening the same.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the general description.
We will describe a pipe-bender embodying our invention and then point out'the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference will indicate corresponding parts in both the figures. v
Figure 1 is a plan of a pipe-bender embodying our invention and showing the same as engaging with a length of pipe, and Fig. 2 is a section on the line as w of- Fig. 1. 1'
The head of the tool comprises walls 1 2,, which are divergent, thusgiving a substantially V shape to the work-engaging surface of the head, and thus providing for engaging the head with the diflerent sizesof pipe. The
base of the head or the junction of the two walls is longitudinally curved, as indicated by dotted lines .3 in Fig. 1, and this curve 3 terminates in abrupt curved portions 4, which will permit of a slight freedom of-the pipe as it is bent, therefore obviating any danger of breaking the pipe, Coacting with the head is a hook-shaped jaw 5, the three members of said jaw being extended one from another at substantially right angles, so that opposing corners are provided permitting the jaw to engage with diflerent sizes of pipe. The hook portion 5 has a movement in a slot 6, formed in the wall 1 of the head, and it also has a threaded stem 7 which passes into the tubular Shank 8, extended from the head, and engaging with this threaded stem 7 is a 'nut 9 for adjusting the jaw. This nut 9 projects through opposite openings in the shank 8 and has its perlphery milled, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2.
We have shown a handle or lever 10 as dey Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed p 22,1905. Serial No. 256,921.
Patent ed Nov. 28, 1905.
tachably connected to the shank 8 of the head; but it is'obvious that the shank may be continued to form the handle or lever. It will be noted that the hook-shaped jaw 5 is comparatively narrow and -is arranged between the ends of the head walls.
In the operation a straight pipe or a pipe to be bent is passed between the free end of the hook-jaw 5 and the wall 2 of the head, which is somewhat shorter than the wall 1 of said head, and then the hook-jaw is to be adjusted sufficiently tight against the pipe.
By swinging the lever in the direction of the length of the pipe the bend will be formed to any desired degree over the head.
. Having thus described our invention, we
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters I Patentl. A pipe-bender comprising ahead having a longitudinally-curved.and transversely V- .Jaw coacting with said head. p
2. A pipe-bender comprising a head havlng a longitudinally-curved and transversely V- shaped work-engaging surface,'the ends of the curve being somewhat abrupt with relation to the main portion thereof, and an ad- 'shaped work-engaging surface, and a hookjustable hook-shaped jaw coacting with the head.
3. A pipe-bender comprisinga head, longitudinally curved on its work-engaging side and having divergent walls,a tubular shank extended from the head and having lateral openings, a hook-shaped jaw having a threaded stem passing into the tubular shank, and anadjustingnut-engaging with said stem and exsaidv wall, a threaded stem extended from the clamp into the tubular shank, and an adjusting-nut engaging with the said stem.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
