Description

C. ALBERT WIGGIN, OF NORTH SANDWICH, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
Letters Patent No. 80,580, dated August 4, 1868.
IMPROVED APPLE-PRER.
dlgs Srlgcmlr rsferrch in in that Enters ntent mit making' ont nf tte same,
T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Be it known that I, C. ALBERT WIGGIN, of North Sandwich, in the county of Carrollrand State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Applc-Parers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to lthe accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a partofthis specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a. perspective view, and
Figure a side elevation of my apple-parer. l
Figure 3 isa plan view of the platform uponV which the knife-table revolves, with thegearing for operating the table attached.v i f Figure 4 represents an under side view of .the table, and
Figure 5 a side view of the pinion which gears with the table.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing about one-half of the under side of the outer edge of the circular revolving table upon which the' knife is situated with a coggcd surface, into which gears a pinion, with a portion ofits cogs cut away, so that when the knife has travelled its required circuit, the table will immediately return-to its original position, substantially'as hereinafter set forth.
My invention consists, further, in such other devices as will beherelnafter described.
To enable others to employ my invention, I willnow describe itsconstruc'tion andoperation.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents ,a frame, made as seen in figs. I and 2, and provide-rl at its .lower end with a` clamp, by means of which it is secured in position.
On the outer end, a, of frame A, is permanently secured a semicircular platform, C, shown in fig. 3, which is provided or formed with a projection, e, projecting beyond the end of a, and ttifrg against a projection, b, formed on the lower side ofthe revolving table, B, the object of which will be seen hereafter.
B designates the circular revolving table, which is placed upon the vertical shaft b1, working in the end, a, of frame A. About one-half of the outer edge of the under side of the table B iscogged'.
Between the point where the cogs on table B terminate, and the projection b, the table is furnished or formed with a recess, 62.
D represents a rubber or elastic spring wound around the shaft b, and secured at its lower end to a bar of frame Aand by means of which the table, when disengaged from its pinion, is forced back to its original position. l
F is a pinion gearing with the cogs on table B, and working on a horizontal shaft, f. The pinion F has a portion of its cogs cut away, so thatvwhen the knife is directly in front of the fork upon which the apple is placed, or.the knife has accomplished its required circuit, the point on the pinion F where the cogs are removed will come in contact with the recess b2 on tableAB, and thus allow the table to be relieved from the pinion, and cause it to be forced back to its first-pbsitionby the spring D. l
G designates the knife, provided with the handle y, which is secured to a. rocking-shaft, g3, supplied with a spring, gl, and pivoted in ears secured to the-top of the table. This shank or handle g is also provided with a spring,vg2, near itscentrc, and at right angles with the spring gl.'
' J is'the apple-fork, which has a revolving motion through a pinion, 7, placed on a shaft, j', fastened to said fork. The pinion j gears with a pinion, h, which is provided with another pinion, L, gearing intotheimain geanwhcel L, which is situated upon the outer end of shaftf of pinion F.
I designates the handle, which is attached to gear-wheel L. i
An advantageI which II claim in the construction of my apple-parer is, .that it cannot he, clogged bythe parings from the apple, as the table acts as a shield to the gearing, it being situated on the lower side of the,
table, as already explained.
What I claim as new, and desire'to secure by LettersPatent, is- 1. The turn-table B, cogged as described, and furnished with projection b, in combination with pinion F,
`constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
2. Shaft Zal, spring D, pinion F, 'table B, shank g, knife Gr, springs g1 and g2, fork J, shaft j', pinions j, z, and h', gear-wheel L, and shaftf, all combined and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses. C. ALBERT WIGGIN. Witnesses:
O. H. Mnnsrolv, GEO.. It. FnLLows.
