SULKY-PLOW.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1905.
A li ation fil d June 15,1905. Serial No. 265,358.
To ctZZ whom it flung concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. ZANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aspermont, in the county of Stonewall and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sulky-Plows; and I do declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in disk sulky-plows, and more particularly to means'for mounting and adjusting the follower or rear furrow wheel.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable, and highly eificient means for angularly adjusting the rear caster or fol lower wheel, which runs in the newly-made furrow, so as to prevent the same from leaving the furrow and to cause the plow to cut uniformly in both hard and soft land.
With the above and other objects" in view the inventionconsists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In theaccompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a well-known form of sulky-plow with my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear end elevation, and Fig. 4 is a detail vertical sectional view showing the'adjusting-levers for the furrow-wheels.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes a well known form of disk sulkyplow, which comprises a beam 2, a carryingframe 3, and a plow-disk 1. The frame is mounted upon the usual land-wheel 5 and the furrow-wheel 6, which latter is vertically adjustable by means of a hand-lever 7 and angularly adjustable by means of a hand-lever 8. The lever 8 is pivoted by a pin 9 upon one side of a double segmental rack 10, which is mounted upon a frame 18, secured to the rear portion of the beam. Said frame has a rearwardly-extending arm 118, the rear end I of which is bifurcated, as at 19. The rear follower-wheel 15 is journaled on a spindle 16 at the lower end of a vertically-disposed shaft 17, which is journaled in hearings in the bifurcated portions 19 of arm 118, and on the said shaft is adjustably secured a collar 20, which lies between the parts 19 and holds the said shaft against vertical movement. The
lever 8 has a locking-dog 11 to coact with the rack 10 and is connected by a link 12 to a as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 40f the drawings. This lever carries a locking-dog 24c to coact with the rack 10 to hold said lever, and hence the shaft 17 and its wheel 15, in an adjusted position.
It will be seen that when the lever 23 is moved forwardly or rearwardly the angular disposition of the wheel 15 will be changed to cause the plow to cut more or less, as desired. Without this adjustment of the wheel 1 15 the plow will cut more in hard land and less in soft land, and very frequently this wheel is thrown entirely out of the furrow, whereupon the plow fails to cut at all. By adjusting this rear wheel the same will be caused to remain in the furrow and-the plow can be made to cut uniformly in all kinds of earth.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A sulky-plow, having a beam, a front frame and a rear frame, land and furrow wheels on opposite sides of the front frame, a vertical shaft mounted in the front frame for angular movement, and having a spindle for the furrow-wheel and also provided with a crank, a disk carried by the beam, a followerwheel in rear of the disk, a vertical shaft mounted in the rear frame for angular movement and having a spindle for the followerwheel, and also provided with a crank, asegment-rack on the rear frame, levers on opposite sides ofsaid segment-rack, each havinga dog to engage the rack, and links connecting the respective levers to the respective cranks of the furrow and follower wheel vertical shafts.
2. A sulky-plow having a beam, a front frame and a rear frame, each attached to the beam, said rear frame having a rearwardlyextending arm and an upwardly-extending segment-rack, land and furrow wheels on opposite sides of the front frame, a vertical shaft mounted in the front frame for angular movement and provided with a crank at its upper end and with a spindle at its lower end for the furrow-wheel, a disk carried by the beam, a follower-wheel in rear of the disk, a vertical shaft having its bearings in the arm of the rear frame and provided at its upper end with a crank and at its lower end with a spindle for the follower-wheel, levers on 0pposite sides of the segment-rack, each having a dog" to engage the rack, and links connecting the respective levers to the respective cranks of the furrow and follower wheel vertical shafts.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
