END-GATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1905.
Application filed July 6, 1905. Serial No. 268,516.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OscAR ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arthur, in the county of Ida, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to end-gates for wagons.
One object of the invention is to provide an exceedingly simple, inexpensive, durable, and eflicient gate embodying such characteristics that it may be readily locked in its closed or open position.
- Another object of the invention resides in the provision of an end-gate detachably associated with the end of a vehicle-body in such manner thatit may readily be closed or opened.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an end-gate of such character that it may efficiently serve for cooperation with the Wagon-body for dumping purpbses. 7
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the rear portion of a wagon-bod y with the end-gate closed. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the gate removed. Fig.4 is a vertical section through the body and gate with the gate in closed position.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view of one of the bolts. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the retaining-hook.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference charac The end-gate may be formed of any suitable material and is provided with a back portion 8 and side members 9, each side being provided with a curved slot 11, the slots being arranged upon the same curve and in alinement with each other and located near the lower ends of the sides. The upper ends of the sides are reduced, as at 12, the sides and back of the end-gate being braced by a series of angle-straps 13, as shown.
In order to hinge the end-gate to the wagonbody, the bolts are engaged with the corresponding slots 11 in the sides of the end-gate, the hooked ends 3 being turned to engage them in the slots of the end-gate and then turned at a sufiicient angle to cause the portion 2 to lie in the slots and the extreme end portions 4 to lie opposite the outer faces of the slots. Pivotally mounted upon the opposite sides of the end-gates are hooked members 1A, which are designed to be engaged over the hooked sides of the respective bolts 2 to positively lock the end-gate in its closed position. To hold the hooks yieldably engaged with the bolts, they are each provided with an arc-shaped rod 20, the free end of which is passed through the guide 21 and between which guide and the hook, upon the areshaped rod 20, is a helical spring a. These springs tend to force the hooks away from the guides and into engagement with the portions 3 of the bolts, while permitting the hooks to be disengaged when desired.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the bolts 2 when the gates are arranged therebetween and the outer faces of the ve hicle'body the hooked ends 3 protrude through the slots 11 of the end-gate, whereby the endgate may be secured to the body and guided in its movement when opened and prevented from becoming accidentally disengaged from the body, the inner ends 11 of the slots limiting the outward swing of the end-gate.
In order to facilitate the opening and closing of the end-gate, I provide a suitable handle 15 at each side of the end-gate, which handles bridge the slots 11 in such manner as not to contact or interfere with the hooked ends of the aforesaid bolts in the opening and closing 0f.the gate.
What is claimed is- 1. The combination with a wagon -body having a bolt rotatably mounted upon each side near the rear end thereof, of a gate having its side members each provided with a.
curved slot for engagement with the aforesaid bolts, and means engaging the said bolts for locking the end-gate in its closed position.
2. The combination with a wagon-body having eyebolts mounted on each of its sides, and bolts provided with shankspivotally mounted in said eyebolts, each of said bolts having a curved hooked end, of an end-gate having a curved slot, formed in each of its IO sides, the slots being adapted for engagement with the hooked ends of the said bolts where by the end-gate may be hingedly connected with the wagon-body, and means for locking the end-gate in its closed position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in I 5 presence of two witnesses.
OSCAR ANDERSON.
