Beit known that I, PHINEAS PRENTISS, of Chester, Hampden county, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improved Washing Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full'and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying'drawings, and to th`c letters of reference marked thereon.

Inthe drawings- Figure 1 represents a sectional viewof my device, and Figure 2a plan view of the lower part of it. I 'llhis invention consists of a washing-machine builtI upon the mosteconomical pr-inciple, both' of power and cost. l

Inconstructioml formmy machine with a tub, A, corrug'ated' upon the inside, at the 'sides and bottom, with strips of wood, a a,"'&c., or these corrngations may be formed in the lstock of the tub directly by suitable machinery. In the centreof thisv tub I sometimes place an upright centre-piece, B, also corrugated around its surface, in a similar manner as the tub.

The device for making this machine consists of a gear-wheel, C, attached to the main shaft D'of the dasher. E, above the cover, F, ofthe tub'. This gear-wheel C has operating it a segmentary gear, G, working upon a pivot, H, and operated by a handle, J, which iits in sockets, b and b, hereafter more fully described .By working the handle to and fro, lthe'dasher inside of the tub is worked with reciprocating partial revolutions, and the clothes within are scrubbed against the numerouscorrugations on the insdesurfaces of the tub. i

The sockets 6 andare made in a peculiar nianner, so that the handle J may be shifted to snit the peculiar circumstances of the case. Thus, when placed in thel position shown in the drawings, it is -suitable for a tall person, or, in case theV tub is placed in a low position relatively, and'when. the handle is placed as indicated by red lines in tig. 1, it is arranged for the convenience of a child, 86o. In the figure, it isseen that the socket b is made double, having a dividing-piece, c, between the upper and lower places, for the handle.

The advantages of my device are, that I obtain an easily-working washing-machine, simple in construction and effectual in operation.

Having described myv invention, whatl claiin as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- In combination with the tub, with ribbed sides and dasher, with gearing, the adjustable socket, arranged so that the handle may be used with'coniparative depression cir-elevation, substantially as shown.
