lle it known that l, PATRICK D. Sinnen. a citizen of the United cmitaines, and a resident of tlyracnse, in the county of Onondaga, in the fdtate of New York, have invented new and useful improvements in llurial-(asespf which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

rlvhis invention relates to the species of burial -cases which are formed from sheet metal.

fvly present invention consists in improved construction of said cases, and embodies novel features of details which render the case snitable to be used either as a burial-casket or as a rough box for containing said casket.

ln the drawings hereto annexed, Figure l is partly a side view and partly a sectional view of a burial-case embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged tral'isverse section of a portion of the burial-case, showing more clearly the seat of the lid; and liigs. lf and 5 are sectional views of modifications of the inventioir A represents the body of the box or case, and B the lid thereof, both of which are formed from suitable sheet metal bent into the desired shape. illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. the top portion of said wall and the deflected margin thereof are thoroughly braced.

lhe lid l is formed with a horizontal mar gin by which it is seated on the gasket I and with a downwardly-turned edge f1, which laps over the edge of thc 'flange c and serves to prevent lateral disirilacement of the lid. The central portion of the lid and the walls of the body fry are formed with one or more billges in imitation of panels y"f, preferably two of said bnlges, as represented in the drawings, and similar bulges may be .formed in the sides of the case. In each of these bulges ,l place a board /a of either wood or other suitable material, fastened to the lid, preferably by means of rivets fr. The bulges j j" serve to sti'llen the lid, while theboard /1/ forms a mufller of the sound of metal incident to jars or vibrations thereof.

it is obvious that suitable clamps are to be employed for pressing the lid onto the gasket l; so as to hermetically seal the case. A, very simple and well-known style of clamp suitable for the aforesaid purpose is shown at in F ig. l of the drawings; but .l do not limit myself to the use of such a clamp, as other and better forms of clamps, equally well known in the art, may be employed;

lfllhat l claim as my invention isl-l burial-case consisting of a slieet-inetal body having' the upper edge of its sides and ends offset laterally and outwardly and depressed iongitudinally to form lengrthwise grooves, a packing in the grooves, and a lid resting on the packing and havii'ig a downward flange inclosing the offset edges of the body, and means to clamp the lid on the ease.
